Are the menus created by Locu crawlable?
-
As many of you might now, Locu is a company that allows restaurant owners to manage and post their menus on multiple websites. Their service is pretty slick, but is does raise the issue of whether their menus are crawlable or not.
You can see an example here: http://thequarternyc.com/menus.html. The menus are embedded into the website using a simple script:
Using Google Fetch, it doesn't look like there's any content to crawl, but Locu claims that the content IS crawlable.
I would love to get some other opinions on this question.
Thanks!

Out of interest, I tried Bing and the searches failed.
One more reason to add a plain text version in the noscript tag.
-
Could be. They could also be linked to on those phrases from other sites.
So I tested a different string from both menus:
"goat bucheret, carmody, dry aged jack, pt." -> success
and
"Satur Farms Green Salad" -> success
Perhaps you can confirm with your own test but it appears the claim is true.
However as a back up, it couldn't hurt to include no-script content since that's literally the purpose of the tag. Just remember to maintain the content.

This is what they responded with:
**Examples of working Search Quotes: **-- Vadouvan spiced squash seeds (1st hit)-- Mahogany Style Catfish Fillet (2nd hit )
Their menus do indeed show up, and the script is the same as in my previous example:
and
Is this proof enough?

If they claim it, ask them to back it up with a real example or two. Then copy what they did (ie noscript link perhaps?)

Googlebot can crawl javascript (which is how Locu displays text) but it's not a guarantee. If it's an option I would stick with HTML. There was a great case study done on YOUmoz awhile back on this : Can Google Really Access Content in JavaScript? Really?

What is the best way to deal with creating a separate brand with it's own website when the main site already ranks well for the target keywords?
A client currently has a site that ranks well for a number of queries. They recently created a new site for a spin-off brand/company that they now want to focus on ranking for some of the keywords their original site already ranked for. What would be the best way to go about this without throwing away the existing authority and traffic the original site has for those queries?

Blogs created by a company for us and another company
Hi, we are not a big company and as well as creating our own blogs, a company for a while now has provided us each month with blog posts. But hey also provide other companies in the UK with the same content. Each month we create 2 or 3 of our own generated blog posts relating to the services we provide. Also we receive on average 10 blog posts (pulled in to the site through a word press add in and an rss feed from the company) to the site. The content is about specific topics which people will be searching for and they are really well optimized pages. Our own blog posts are looked at more often 80% to 20% but we do have a great link from a national site with a DA of 97 linking to one of their blog posts. But I wondered if google penalizes us because there will be other companies across the UK with the exact same content as us? Or whether these blog posts will help us because it is great content, even though other companies will probably have the same posts on their site? Nobody in our area uses this content as we have an agreement with the company which provides it. Many Thanks

Is it better to create more pages of content or expand on current pages of content?
I am assuming that one way of improving the rankings of current pages will be to create more content on the keywords used... should this be an expansion of the content on current pages I am optimising for a keyword or is it better to keep creating new pages and if we are creating new pages is it best to use an extension of the keyword on the new page – for example if we are optimising one page for ‘does voltage optimisation work’ would it then be worth creating a page optimised for ‘does voltage optimisation work in hotels’ for example and so on? I am guessing maybe both might help, this is just a question I have had from one of my clients.

Any idea how Google is doing this? Is it schematic? http://techcrunch.com/2014/02/28/google-adds-full-restaurant-menus-to-its-search-results-pages/
Google is now showing menus on select searches. Any idea how they are getting this information? I would like to make sure my clients get visibility this way.

How to make FB comments crawlable by Google? <noscript>?</noscript>
We get tons of FB comments, but it's all in iframe, so Google doesn't give us any credit for it. We found a solution - turn all the comments into HTML and hide it from readers with <noscript>. </p> <p> </p> <p>Will this help? I heard that Google considers <noscript> a scammy practice. Is that true?</p> <p>How do you guys make your FB comments SEO friendly?</p> <p> </p></noscript>

Best approach to create a mobile version of a website
Hi all, I have a customer that wants to create a mobile version of his website, he wants to create a subdomain to redirect visitors to the mobile version and this mobile version will be a separate folder hosted on the same hosting. I'm seeing really good things from frameworks like JqueryMobile but I thinks they are not really SEO friendly since they load pages with Ajax. So, the question is: its ok to use this kind of frameworks or should I create all the html and css by myself? I'm really looking forward to use the frameworks, since its faster and less time consuming than creating the whole site with html. But I don't want to waste time if it will not be SEO friendly. Thanks in advance
