What's Your Most Jaw-Droppingly Spammy Link ( or Promo) Request?
-
Sheesh.
I get them every day. But this one takes the cake. It's from a woman I met once in my life on a long run with my running club. That was two years ago. Now she wants me to endorse her -- even though I know nothing about her professionally.
But wait, there's more. She's not much of a runner. As it happens, I know a thing or two about fitness -- having edited a fitness magazine and worked on websites for many top fitness and nutrition pros. The idea of an MSW doing fitness programs for people with medical problems raises all kinds of red flags.
She sent this Facebook IM:
Hi Daniel - hope all is well! I was wondering if you can share my page with your friends, with the following message (or something similar). Thank you so much in advance!
My friend XXXXXX, MSW, has been running XXXX Personal Training for the past 18 years. She specializes in exercise programming for people who have medical problems, everything from heart problems to chronic pain conditions. She works on site in her clients' homes in midtown and downtown XXXXXX. Please contact her if you know anyone who would benefit from her expertise.

Right. In a previous life, I headed the news dept. of a TV station.
I would regularly get calls from clueless PR people who asked the question: "Did you get my press release?"
What I always felt like saying (but usually was able to restrain myself from saying) was:
"How the hell would I know? And please F&*% off and die a slow painful death. We receive hundreds of press releases every day and 99.99% of the time it's a waste of our time to have even the most junior staff member read them. You have cost me time and money -- and how dare you? I resent it, I hate you, and I have now made a mental note of the idiot company dumb enough to have hired you. BTW, I'm wondering how this call even eneded up being routed to me. Something went wrong."

I have a blog that gets very short posts about industry news (not promotional stuff - genuine news).
I hate it when somebody sends a spammy promo request (which either gets deleted manually or filtered (thanks to gmail you can have an unlimited number of filters).
Then they call on the phone to be sure that I got it.
I feel like saying... "Nobody gives a damn about your ________ (tenth anniversary, staff changes, retirements, president's chest thumping video)". My readers would unsubscribe if I published that crap.

Not really a spammy link promo or anything, but I have an SEO client who ranks number 1 for...
generic keyword such as : "land survey company" and 20 surround cities. He emailed me a couple day ago asking me to target "company surveying city name" sigh....

Automatic links from other domains when we create a new landing page - Is this a spammy technique?
Hi everyone, Recently we've discovered 2-3 sites (which we own the domains names) and these sites seem to automatically create links to our new landing pages on our main site. Those sites also can't be accessed in your browser as it redirects straight to our main website. So, for example, we create a new landing page on our main site, and then Moz has been picking up links to this page from these other domains with text such as "Book now". I think historically someone in the company set up loads of sites with redirects and there must be something automatically happening. Is this likely to be a spammy technique? Ie we seem to be getting "follow" links from other domains every time we create a new page." Also as this could be quite a negative thing we've discovered I can't really give our out business links, but really appreciate your tips and advice. I'm trying to work out what to do if this is a spammy technique and also affecting our trust scores etc and what we should do about it. Thanks for your help and input. 🙂Mike

Link quality
Hi, Having read dozens of your blogs and found them highly informative, i have to ask a question. I am kicking oout our SEO company and have taken over the SEO myself with some excellent results. Our SEO providers tell me that links from any site (irrelevent of their DA) are good, providing they are comming from a relevant source. We are in the security industry and according to MOZ, we have a DA of 52. If i can get a link to our site from another company in our industry but they have a DA of 10, is this really beneficial for me? Info i have read in Moz blogs suggest it is n ot a good idea. Please help. many thanks Daddy Smurf

Total Links vs Ext. Followed Links
Hi I'm fairly new to SEO and SEOMOZ. I've created a campaign for my own site and I've added 3 competitor sites. There are 1,385 total links to my site and a massive 49,450 links to one of my competitor's site. However under "Ext. Followed Links", there are 1,045 to my site and only 911 to the same competitor site. Am I correct that it is the "Ext. Followed Links" which are more important from an SEO point of view as the other links have the "no follow" attribute set? Or have I got this wrong? Thanks James

Value of Inbound Links to Pages With a lot of Outbound Links
Suppose you have a resource page of the Top 50 Awesome Sites in your niche. Since there are about 50 outbound links, then I would think there will be less Page Rank being passed to internal pages from internal links on the resource page. Since you are getting less PR passed to internal pages, are there other ways the inbound links can be beneficial, such as increasing the diversity of links of your domain? Sites like SEO Optimise seem to create a lot of Top 30 Resources lists and I have read that they think it is a strong tactic.
