How to approach SEO for a large site that doesn't have specific keyword goals?
-
So, I have a project that has 10,000+ page of unique editorial content in a specific industry. They currently get about 500,000 pageviews a month and average just under 2 pages per visit. It has a 66 domain authority and has been doing "the basics" for SEO for about 7 years (headline is an H1, URL is custom while the headline is more "reader friendly", description is a snippet of the body copy a little into the first paragraph, nofollow in the comments).
The crux is that it's an editorial publication so they're not targeting specific keywords, but a wide swath of keywords.
Would it be best to just dive in and figure out some of the less competitive keywords for some of the articles that they could tailor some content to rank better for, then just move onto more and more? What are some ways to approach this if they just want to raise their general traffic and relevancy to the next level?

Thanks Theo!
I'll try to go in order here:
1 - Not selling anything, but serving ads. It has a small affiliate shopping functionality that is hard coded into the HTML, but with a max of 3 links on a page for those.
2 - Search=43%, Direct=25%, Referral=32%
3 - Visitor interaction are comments or social shares.
4 - I'm somewhat of a noob, so I don't really know what to call a conversion here?
5 - The IA seems to be pretty good overall. There are categories in the top nav, the content is easily readable and at a good text size, a fairly common site overall structure and aesethic-wise. Is it appropriate to mention the site in question here? It's not a traditional "client" of mine so they're open to any help. -
Search=43%, Direct=25%, Referral=32%
This site has a tribe of people.
So, it must have some content that is highly appealing to some people. I would break out the analytics to see what type of content is being referred and direct... and what is from search.
I would be sure that I made this content very easy to share.
Does this site have a feed that people can subscribe to? I use feedburner on one of my sites and have about 20,000 subscribers. When I post something new it gets immediate action. This site could do the same thing.

Wow, thanks for the thorough replies!
EGOL:
They're definitely open to content direction. I'm wondering if the tweaking of existing low-ranking content would be worth it (will it get indexed again even? will raising the ranking of low-competition and low-traffic content help as much as new content with new direction in mind?) -
Right.... I have a site that gets low monthly traffic per page. The way for me to get more traffic is to get more pages up. Since it is in a low competition niche the new pages immediately rank really well - so I don't have to worry much about increasing my power. Instead I focus on getting keyword reach with more pages.

"If I was the owner of that site I would want information on what type of content is bringing in the visitors and what kind of content isn't. Then, using the successful content as a guide I would try to produce more of that kind of stuff."
Completely agree. On any site the content is the most important but on a website like this it is almost everything.
-
This site seems to be successful if it is generating 500,000 pageviews per month.... however, that really boils down to an average of just 50 pageviews per month for the average page.
So, in my mind, some of their content is successful and some of it isn't.
If I was the owner of that site I would want information on what type of content is bringing in the visitors and what kind of content isn't. Then, using the successful content as a guide I would try to produce more of that kind of stuff.
Also, where is this content coming from. Search? Return visitors? Does this site have a feed that has a big tribe of subscribers who account for most of the pageviews. If most of the pageviews are coming from the tribe then a plan to enlarge the tribe or get then to evangelize might yield great results.
I would also look at the content that is not bringing in much traffic from search. Why not? Are the title tags clever instead of keyword targeted? What can be done about that?
There are lots of questions when you have a site like this. Some of the answers will yield payback and some will not.

That will mainly depend on their goals. Are they trying to sell anything (services, products?) or perhaps show ads? Depending on these goals you for example could try to find ways to increase pages/visit or the number of visits. If they are scoring well on the long tail (which it seems they are) you might want to increase the visits from short tail keywords. How is the split between search/direct/referral, and if skewed, what can you do to change this? Is there any visitor interaction, and if not, is this desired? How are the conversions on the website? Is there any related content that draws visitors deeper into the website? Is the information architecture set up in a way to maximize the (apparently valuable) content to visitors?

Wouldn't it be great to add a visitor intent field in a keyword study ?
Hello everybody, With hummingbird update i think i understand that two pages like exclusive dating website chic dating services which could have been targeted on 2 different pages can now be targeted in a single one.
Search Behavior | | Sindicic_Alexis
In the end google is asking "Well... isn't an "exclusive" dating website the.. same as a "chic" one ? isn't it the same visitor intent which is triggered ? ". I'm building a new keyword study for one of my websites and i'm trying to be more in the "intent" point of view than in the "keyword" one. I've added a new column to my study which includes transactional / navigational and informational dropdown. I think this information is great but i feel that something is missing... I wonder if we could include a column which describes the real visitor intent in the form of a "user story"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_story for example : As a visitor i want to land on a page that proves that the company is only working with "exclusive" people.
-> We could optimise this page for all the "exclusive" "chic" "fancy" "elegant" "elite" keywords. Just a thought, i'd be really interested in knowing your point of view. Thanks a lot for your answers 🙂0 -
Displaying different site content to users who have already visited your site
I've seen and heard about the concept of treating repeat site visitors differently, displaying different content based on behavior etc. Not sure what it's called buy Hubspot seems to offer something like this with their platform. Anyone know of a third party app (Wordpress perhaps) or tool that does this? How does this even work? Thanks for the help!!

Blog posts not getting indexed and being outranked by scrapper sites.
Our Google traffic has dropped significantly over the last year and now we're struggling to even get our blog posts indexed. It's been extremely discouraging and we're trying to do what ever we can to fix it. I've included a screenshot of our Google traffic as well as Pages Indexed according to WebmasterTools. http://i.imgur.com/Wu1D8.jpg The Problem Our blog posts are frequently not getting indexed. Many times they are outranked by low authority scraper sites, our Twitter/FB account, etc. Sometimes our homepage will rank instead of the blog post. Sometimes we'll break a news story, get tons of quality backlinks, and still be nowhere in Google. Pretty much the only Google traffic we see is from existing posts. Still 3,200 pages indexed when we have only 1,600 posts. I guess this isn't really a problem... just waiting for the meta noindex to take effect. More details We've seen no duplicate content or other warnings from WebmasterTools. We've been constantly acquiring quality backlinks from credible sites. We deleted the useless content and fixed the canonical issues that were a result of switching servers. History Our site is a news/entertainment blog. The traffic usually has spikes depending on what's going on in the news. Nov 1, 2011 - Site kept maxing out at 30k+ visits so we switched servers. Jan 30, 2012 - Hired a writer so we could focus on other aspects of the site. Apr 19, 2012 - Noticed our posts weren't getting indexed like they used to. Suspected our writer was spinning articles but couldn't find any evidence. 90% of our blog posts were nowhere to be found in Google. Scrapper sites would outrank us for our own stories... even our Twitter account was ranking ahead of us. IF our story would show up in Google it would usually be the home page instead of the blog post. Sep 2012 - Finally got more serious about addressing the problem. Noticed a couple potentially big problems and started making changes. Canonical Issues non-www site didn't redirect to www. It showed 2 different link profiles according to OpenSiteExplorer and 0 backlinks according to Webmaster Tools. Wordpress shortlinks weren't redirecting to the actual permalink. For instance http://www.domain.com/?p=123 and http://www.domain.com/post-example were both getting indexed. For every post there were 4 different versions that Google had to choose from. http://domain.com/?p=123, http://www.domain.com/?p=123, http://domain.com/post-example, and http://www.domain.com/post-example I figured the canonical issues must have happened when we switched servers which was the reason for the drop in WebmasterTools indexed pages and increase in Not Selected pages. FIXED (Sep 15): One we fixed the canonical issue the Indexed Pages went back up however the Not Selected is still the same. Duplicate Content When we first created our site we wanted to have tons of images for each musician/athlete/actor/etc. so we uploaded about 5-10 for each person. We created a blog post for each image with no writing and the exact same post titles. As a result there were TONS of low-quality, similar posts, with virtually identical permalinks. e.g. http://www.domain.com/james-smith1, http://www.domain.com/james-smith2, http://www.domain.com/james-smith3, etc. A crawl on Sep 26 showed over 550 duplicate content warnings. FIXED (Oct 1): We deleted/301 redirected the useless pages (they weren't getting traffic anyways) and by the next crawl the number was almost to 0... which it's at now. We also had TONS of tags (since there're constantly new names in the media) that were getting indexed so we had meta robots noindex them. Questions: Why aren't a majority of our posts getting indexed? Were we penalized or just stuck because of a filter? How long should it take for meta robots to noindex the tags pages? (I did it on Sep 25 but they are still there) If a site is scraping our content (same title, image, excert) but linking to us, should we contact them and tell them to remove it? Is there anything else we need to do start getting our blog posts indexed like they used to? Should we try contacting Google to re-evaluate our site? Sorry, that was a LOT of writing. If anyone wants the URL please let me know so I can PM it to you. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Wu1D8.jpg

Why would my Bounce Rate drop from 40% to 2% over 3 days without making any major changes to my site www.hiltonhead.com?
Our Wordpress site has had an historical bounce rate of 40% for the last 3 years but last Thursday it dropped to 17%, Friday to 7% and now is running at 2%. The pageviews per visit have also increased from 3 to almost 6. Thanks
