I'd recommend checking MozCast.com to measure overall volatility in the results page - but I agree that dropping from #3 to #10 doesn't sound like a penalty. Remember that Penguin et al are updates to the whole search algorithm, so in addition to big shifts there are also going to be a ton of smaller changes as Google tweaks what works and how well it works. It's definitely something you can recover from. Take a look at the sites that are ranking above you now: what do they have that you don't? That will give you some insight into what you need to start improving first.

Hi,
If all keywords dropped - and most (90% at least) are +50 as far as position now then Penguin can be the reason if that happen during the update timetable. otherwise the reason is different and I hope for you that you are not under Penguin as far as filter because that will be costly.
If you jump from #3 to #10 and so for some keywords that is probably due to "the google dance" - it means you don't have enough stability to maintain one or more keywords stabile and when a new link appears google might dance with your rankings before trying to stabilize those - it dosen't mean you are necessarily doing something wrong - and whatever you do don't change your strategy based on those movements - unless you are doing something spammy and in that case you need to stop anyway (if you care for the project long term).
Cheers.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes from #3 to #10 but this is something that just happened and I was searching for a reason and coincidently the penguin update was around the same time.
I track my keywords, thats how I knew that I dropped in the serp.
I try to keep all the link building white hat but a few bad links may have slipped through.
Ill go back and see what the top 3 are doing. I know they arent actively working on seo so hopefully Ill be back soon.

Hi,
I was ranking 3rd for my local search and now Im the last result on the page.
** So from #3 you got to pos #10 ?
If so, this dosen't look like Penguin - it would't be that "soft". With penguin you are on pos #3 and then .. nowhere in sight (+50 at least) and it's site wide - so that means you lose rankings more or less on all keywords.
For now your visibility with external tools is not available so it's hard for me to say , for now, if you lost rankings or just on a few keywords - but you should see that in your internal tools like Google analytics and Webmaster tools and in SEOMOz if you track your keywords here (you should :).
I've been link building, creating relevant blog posts and adding new pages and I am losing traction.
** The link building part is very tricky: did you went above the "call of duty" ? If you did - it may or it already back fired.
Overall - my personal best advice is to look at everything from a Serp point of view not independently to your site alone. Look at serps for your keywords and see what others are doing, building and so on.
Cheers.

Hi All,
I am not sure what to do either! I was ranking 3rd for my local search and now Im the last result on the page. Compared to some of the recent posts Ive read on this forum its not so bad but super frustration.
I've been link building, creating relevant blog posts and adding new pages and I am losing traction.
My domain is www.x4dc.com

Hi,
Penguin 2.0 is not only about links - actually not even half of the sites impacted by any Penguin updates were about links only.
I am not saying is not about links - If you can post the URL - someone here for sure can have a look and send you a second opinion as far as reason.
But if it's about links you will need to have a more deeper look at the domain link profile and see how you can balance it. (and by link profile I mean everything links, domains, class c sources, anchor text - especially anchor text, link placement ration - real estate and more).
Cheers.

Google panda, penguin or Patience needed?
Dear friends, On 3rd of May, i suffered a Manual google unnatural outbound link penalty. I recovered from the said penalty on 27th of June. However, i have noticed that my traffic has been dropping since 23rd April. I am confused where to target my work. Should i work on thin content and is it an algorithmic Panda problem (but my keywords are still ranking good) or is it a Penguin problem (I had 6 domains with payday loans backlinks and i have dosavowed 32 backlinks recently) What should be my plan of action here and what would you recommend? An image is attached herewith for your reference, PHd8BzX.png

Recovered from penguin/panda but which one?
So the good news is that for the first time since April 24th, one of our websites is back in the search results as of around December 12 but I am still unsure as whether it was panda or penguin (or both) that was impacting the site?? Note this was not a manual penalty. I diagnosed it as a penguin issue (drop on April 24th, aggressive on-page optimisation, around 10% of links from spammy directories like addyourfreelinks.com with anchor text built by a questionable agency), but on further advice it was thought that panda was also an issue because it is a hotel microsite so there was duplication with our own brand site and across third party travel sites and there were a number of pages with bare content. I figured it was a good time to clean everything up to address both. Here is a summary of actions taken: submitted disavow file on October 24th with all questionable links including actions taken and comments. Since then I have cleaned up some content so it is less aggressively targeting certain keywords. Amended several third party listings with duplicate content No follow, indexed pages that were directly duplicated with our brand site and over the last month have built a few good quality links. Cleaned up 404's in webmaster tools over the last week I have searched to see if there were any algorithm updates around December 12 but cannot find any mentions. Thoughts?

Is it normal to receive 2 mails from Google?
I filed a reconsideration request that was answered in less than a week. Subsequently I was told that no manual penalty was in place but various algorithm factors might be causing my heavy drops in ranking. Then I got a second email which was even more specific. This was great, really heartening stuff and a total surprise as it was very helpful. Is it normal to receive 2 emails from Google with such clear information? I have been very pleased by the comments they have made as it has shown me that they're more customer focused than I had been led to believe by all the research I had done pre reconsideration request. Has anyone else had a clear outline of what they needed to fix and has their site subsequently rebounded post fixing?

Whats next after I rank for many keywords?
I have a client who came to me wanting to know what's next for her as she already ranks in the top 5 for hundreds of keywords. She is right, her rankings for her niche are excellent and there are no relevant keywords for her to try and go after. What would be next to generate traffic? p.s She also has links from just about everyone in the industry that's relevant There has to be more "tricks" to seo besides keywords and link building

Penguin concerns
I recently joined a retail company who have been using an SEO agency for a few years. Having done a bit of link profile analysis i'm more than a little concerned that we're a sitting duck for the dreaded penguin. My main question is should i focus more on the number of actual links pointing at a page or the number of linking root domains? For example one of our pages has over 18000 links pointing at it but from only 39 root domains (immediate alarm bells!!). Most of the links are exact anchor text fro one particular term. So far we haven't been hit but i'm not naive to think we're out of the woods yet.
