Would love to get some opinions on the latest Penguin 2.0 update and how on earth the #1 rank is #1 ranked, very, very peculiar...
Any and all theories welcomed and appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Micheal,
I am going to have to throw my theory/observation out in this case! Just had a quick look at ahrefs and looks like these guys have been doing some major link building in the last couple of weeks (with main keyphrase brisbane seo).

Just too soon to show up in the moz metrics. You wouldn't think this kind of thing would keep them in the top spot for too long, but there you go. **Note to self to check out a couple of the other cases I had seen for very recent funny stuff!

Thanks Lynn for your theory.
I must admit that was one of the things I possibly thought, but again it is so hard to quantify. Surely there are 100's of no opitmisation type sites that could fall into this category, so why this one?
In regards to Penguin it has happened for numerous AU related searches on May 24 that I have been tracking, this is just one example. I do know there have been other algorithm updates in AU potentially too though so may be a combo.

Well, here is a theory, not going to say a completely thought out one!
I have seen quite a few examples like this in industries which could be said to have traditionally attracted seo over-optimisation (specifically travel and gaming related). Almost seems like even the hint of optimization (more than a handful of exact match links) is enough to get a site thrown down the rankings and sites that are really not particularly optimised on site, but definitely do not have much of an optimised link profile are being pushed up to the top.
Of course SEO is another industry that attracts this kind of stuff, although your specific search has a couple of pretty optimised sites in the 2-10 positions, so surely it depends on a whole range of factors.
Not 100% sure this is even exactly related to the recent penguin 2.0 update since I was seeing some flux on various rankings from the first week of May (from Europe).
Actually, thats not much of a theory at all, just an observation!
Maybe Dr Pete will chime in... seems something up his alley......

What is the best strategy to SEO Discontinued Products on Ecommerce Sites?
RebelsMarket.com is a marketplace for alternative fashion. We have hundreds of sellers who have listed thousands of products. Over 90% of the items do not generate any sales; and about 40% of the products have been on the website for over 3+ years. We want to cleanup the catalog and remove all the old listings that older than 2years that do not generate any sales. What is the best practice for removing thousands of listings an Ecommerce site? do we 404 these products and show similar items? Your help and thoughts is much appreciated.

Chinese search engine indexation
Hello, I have read that it is vital for a site to be indexed in Chinese search engines that it needs to be hosted in China on a server with a Chinese IP address, is this true? The site in question is a .cn site, hosted in USA currently, but served via CloudFlare (which has locations in China). Any advice on how to rank a Chinese site would be greatly appreciated, including if you know anyone who I can hire to create a Chinese sitemap file to submit to Chinese search engines (and even optimise the site). Many thanks,

What is your SEO agency doing in terms of link building for clients?
What are you or your SEO agency doing for your client's link building efforts? What are you (or the agency) doing yourself, or out-sourcing, or having the client do for link building? If a new client needs some serious link building done, what do you prescribe and implement straight off the bat? What are your go-to link building tactics for clients? What are the link building challenges faced by your agency in 2013/2014? What's working for your agency and what's not? Does your agency work closely with the client's marketing department to gain link traction? If so, what are collaborating on? What else might you be willing to share about your agencies link building practices? Thanks

Redirecting old domains for SEO ranking?
It's been a while since I read anything seriously out of the box on SEO but I thought I would see what others thought of the bold assertions made in this article. Most of it revolves around buying expired domains and using a 301 to point them, and their juice, to new sites. This guy makes a living doing this so he has to know a bit more than the average Joe but I'm wondering where the other shoe is and when it drops.

Victim of Negative SEO - Can I Redirect the Attacked Page to an External Site?
My site has been a victim of Negative SEO. During the course of 3 weeks, I have received over 3000 new backlinks from 200 referring domains (based on Ahref report). All links are pointing to just 1 page (all other pages within the site are unaffected). I have already disavowed as many links as possible from Ahref report, but is that all I can do? What if I continue to receive bad backlinks? I'm thinking of permanently redirecting the affected page to an external website (a dummy site), and hope that all the juice from the bad backlinks will be transferred to that site. Do you think this would be a good practice? I don't care much about keeping the affected page on my site, but I want to make sure the bad backlinks don't affect the entire site. The bad backlinks started to come in around 3 weeks ago and the rankings haven't been affected yet. The backlinks are targeting one single keyword and are mostly comment backlinks and trackbacks. Would appreciate any suggestions 🙂 Howard

Geo-targeted Organic Search Traffic to a sub-domain
For a client of ours, we are likely to create a sub-domain that is to be targeted at a specific country. Most of the content on this sub-domain will be from the main site, although with some specific differentiation to suit that geographic market. We intend to tell Google through Webmaster Centre that the sub-domain is targeted at a specific country. Some questions: a) Any idea how long it could take before google gives precedence to the content in this sub-domain for queries originating from that particular country? b) What is the likely impact of content duplication ? What extent of differentiation is necessary from a search engine perspective? Thanks.
