On Page OPtimisation Query
-
6 weeks ago, we attempted to improve the on page optimisation for the following keyword 'wedding venues ''edited''' on the following page:
''edited''
I just checked when the page was last crawled by google by checking the cache date in the SERPs which is the 27th of May 201?.
We have been tracking the keyword 'wedding venues ''edited''' with the moz keyword ranking tool for the last little while and we've seen no real improvement, in fact we've dropped back a bit in the SERPs to 53rd (Moz says 'Not in top 50', it was 53rd when i last manually checked).
I understand that we have to be building links to our site, but i still hoped we would be doing better than this for this keyword with the work we've done
does anyone have any advice on how we can improve? Have we over optimised?
We would really appreciate any help!
-
Aha, ok yeah that makes more sense now. I'm sure we can include text on ''edited''.
Although, ''edited'' is only 2 clicks away from ''edited''.
If we were to link to ''edited'' from ''edited'', would it still be a good idea to link to ''edited'' from our homepage? That would pass on the most 'juice'...
Or would the site structure look a bit funny then?
Thanks for all your help, much appreciated

my apologies i forgot to mention the link that i recommend the text in it
i meant this one http://www.theweddingsecret.co.uk/weddings-in-bath.htm

This is a great list of link building ideas that should help you think outside the box:
http://pointblankseo.com/link-building-strategies
The overall goal with your SEO and internet marketing efforts should be to become a recognized brand in this niche, because Google is looking more and more at brand & authority for its rankings. But some good links will definitely be a good start.
Here is a good resource for rich snippets/semantic markup. It's actually very easy to implement, and should take you no more than an hour tops.

We struggle to think of high authority sites that would actually link to use. We do ask the wedding suppliers who feature on our site, but their sites tend to be PR 0 - 2 (3 at best). And the site users are people who are getting married, most won't have websites, let alone high authority websites, to link to us. Any thoughts
I'll have to speak to the person about rich snippets again, and do some research myself (i've heard of them but don't fully understand how they work).
-
Currently, it takes 3 clicks to go from the homepage to ''edited''
The page can definitely include more informational text. The only issue is that we are launching multiple sub-regions, of which ''edited'' is only one. So far we have launched ''edited''. We will be launching many more over
the next few years. So the informational text can't just be about ''edited''... So if we linked to all the sub-pages for all the sub-regions, it would be a whole ton of links, that would grow exponentially as time went by... -
If you can get links directly to the page, that's great, but links to the homepage will benefit you as well. Pagerank 2 is very, very low. Improving your link profile will go a long ways towards helping your pages rank better.
What is your concern with the rich snippets, exactly? Having things like review stars showing up in the search results will help improve your clickthrough rate from the SERPs.
-
Having 4 or 200 /300 both are fine
Google can handle that and definitely after the structural update "caffeine".
coming back to our issue one question i have how many clicks will it take you to go from the homepage to the page we are talking about ? (hope you understanding from where i m coming from)
can this page include more informationational text about the weddings in Bath (500 to 700 words) ? which you will link to all the "subpages" under Bath (like venues, all venues, marquee hire and many others? )

We've had advice to be careful not to overload the homepage with internal links throughout the site hence only having the 4 to our 4 'next level' local homepages...
If we built a comprehensive link structure on the homepage, it would very quickly breach over 200/300 internal links (and counting) as we expand...
Maybe we could link to very important pages ranking wise...
-
Thanks Takeshi,
Would you recommend building high authority links to the specific page in question?
''edited''
Or more to the homepage to increase the domain authority?
I still feel we ought to be doing better than 53rd in the SERPs for ''edited''... If it were you guys, would you allow more time before pivoting?
I also read somewhere to be very careful with rich snippets, is this not something we should worry about in this niche?
(Apologies, I'm a newb!)

/magazine have a decent internal structure and links .
why doesn't the homepage have a comprehensive links, menu, maybe more content or even the same structure that you have on the magazine page?
My point i m trying to relay, that the most linked page on any website is always the homepage ( 99%) so leverage the authority that is coming through your homepage to your subpages
-
Looks pretty good to me. Some other areas of optimization could include:
- Including some more synonyms on your page, instead of just exact keyword match
- Add social signal buttons, especially a Google+ +1 button
- Use semantic markup to help search engines understand the content of your page, and possibly display rich snippets
But like you said, links are the main signal when it comes to search rankings, so focus on building some high authority links.
-
Hi Wissam, thanks for the response...
I will definitely take that into account. the site is new as of Januarry 2013.
I didn't fully understand 'You homepage is poor'. Do you mean that it is not good, or that we're not utilising the potential of it to link to important pages on our site?
We do have a sensible internal structure as far as users are concerned, maybe not as far as google is concerned. We do have a blog: ''edited'' and we do send links to the categories from time to time...
Does anyone have any views on the on page optimisation in my first post?
-
If you wanna send signals to google that this page is one of the most important pages on your website then you have to show it in the structure. you homepage is poor. leverage the authority of the homepage to pass to that page and similar pages you have that are important for you.
leverage internal linking from other pages to that page or by launching a blog.
cheers

Improving SEO for an e-commerce page with 1 product page
I'm trying to improve the SEO for an e-commerce store that I'm working for that sells custom car air fresheners where you select the shape of the item and then upload the photo. The site has been around for almost 10 years so has authority in the field and ranks number one for custom car air fresheners and other related high-traffic keywords. However, there is no blog, no social media and has 8 total pages: landing page, FAQ, contact, guidelines, shape/product (page that starts the ordering process with little text), scents, terms, and samples.

I'm struggling with how we rank higher for specific keywords that we are not number 1 with ok traffic (such as dog air freshener, custom air freshener for car with picture, custom photo car air freshener) and not affect the current keywords that we are ranking number one for. In addition, how do we rank higher for other keywords, if we don't have that many pages like a blog to create content? I was thinking of creating a blog to target more keywords, but I don't think there is enough relevant content to make. And I feel Google would find a blog about "top gifts for dad" or "top gifts for the holidays" not relevant. I was also thinking of adding more text to the shapes/product page which could be tailored towards a keyword. Maybe I could create another product page that goes into more detail about the air freshener with images, descriptions, and other use cases. On MOZ, the Domain Authority is 18 (really low), so I am thinking about working on getting backlinks from relevant sources with authority to improve our SEO. Or do we not mess with the text on the website since it works and not worry about the other keywords and focus on technical SEO items and backlinks to help with SEO? TLDR: How do you improve SEO for new keywords for an e-commerce business that doesn't have a lot of pages for content without affecting its number 1 ranking on other keywords?0 -
Should we target Outsource and Offshore on same page?
While doing keyword research I found out that there are 2 keywords with same search count and difficulty level.
Keyword Research | | harshal.khatavkar
Outsource Engineering Design India
Offshore Engineering Design India My question is, should I create 2 separate pages for these keywords with the addition of their extended related keywords or just keep one long page with both these keywords targeted? Technically, Outsource and Offshore have separate meanings but on SERP it seems like both are searched for the same purpose. Can you please share your views on this? Thanks0 -
Page not ranking despite indicators showing should easily be mid-1st page?
I have many years old website selling a service. The main keyword is 47% competitive, and we used to be #1 page 2, occasionally page 1 couple years back. Domain authority is double of any of the competitors on 1st page, followed root domain links is many times that of 1st page competitors, infact against some of them almost 10 times as much, MozRank and MozTrust higher too. Infact, every metric is higher than competition. Only metric which isn't as good is Followed vs NoFollowed links metric, 95% of our links are NoFollowed, but we are still #1 in external followed links. Yet we are stuck on 4th page, and on some localizations we are not even in Top 50. This has happened slowly over time, not a overnight thing. Page we are trying to rank for gets grade A for optimizations, yet we have less significant pages ranking higher for that keyword. Further, newer pages tend to rank better than old ones. The whole site actually ranks quite low and we are not even getting search traffic for long tail keywords.

Precise or longer title for service page?
i am a little confused as to how should i create my META TITLE and on page h1 title
Keyword Research | | sagive
for a service page... Say that page offers "web marketing" service... i know or think i know that precise title ranks higher
on the search results but its less appealing Meta title example:
web marketing | company name On page title:
Web marketing Now, the more compelling title would be of-course longer but less focused 1. Do you think i can test it without hurting my positions permanently?
i have query (i see the stats on Google webmaster tools) that
i get 20,000 views monthly but only 1% clicks... 2. how would you build a title for such a page (meta and onpage)? Would really appreciate your professional view Best regards, Sagive SEO.0 -
Product Page is Battling with Homepage in SERPs
My product page had been solidly in the middle of the first page for months. Now, it is being replaced by my homepage for the same keywords. I don't understand why this is happening and I'm worried about it, particularly from a business stand-point (we offer a variety of products that appeal to completely different audiences) In terms of SEO, Is this necessarily a problem? What can I do to ensure that Google recognizes that the content that those keywords are tied to is on the product page, not the homepage. One thing I did notice is that the 2nd and 3rd most common anchor text for the links to my homepage are the two keywords in question (they are a distant 2nd and 3rd however). If nothing else, is there a way I can get SeoMoz to recognize the homepage on its page rankings so that my heart doesn't drop once a week. Thanks,

Different pages with same keyword phrase.
I have my home page and an interior page targeting the same keyword phrase. Is this ok or would they be competing with each other?

Optimizing two site pages for the same keyword phrase
If a keyword works really well for two pages on your site, is it OK to optimize both pages for that keyword? Is it possible that Google will rank both pages? For example, one of the companies I've worked with is a software developer. They want to use the keyword phrase “simple project management software” for both the home page http://www.wennsoft.com/ and for the product page http://www.wennsoft.com/en/Solutions/By-Products/projectmanagement.aspx. (I’ve got other alternatives that I can use, but optimizing both pages for the same keyword would be the path of least resistance).
