Google is sticking it to E-commerce Companies right?
-
Hi all,
Excuse the rant - but I'd be interested to hear others thoughts on this...
I am completely disheartened by the Google Algorithm updates of the last 18 months. They seem to be completely geared up to making life much much harder for E-commerce companies to rank organically, and much easier for informational sites to rank organically, with the only exception being national or global brands that have millions of pounds to invest in off-line marketing like TV advertising.
Is it not all a devious strategy by Google to ensure e-commerce companies have to pay for their traffic? It seems like if you genuinely want to compete organically as an e-tailer, without investing millions in off-line advertising, you basically have to become a publishing house as well as shop. My company sells building supplies. There are plenty of magazines and info-sites out there offering tips, advice, interactive tools etc. for how to build your own home, home improvement advice etc. But if I want to start getting 'natural' links, I have to become an online magazine and information resource as well and start competing with these other reputable info-resources - where is the sense in that? If house-builders want advice and information on building regulations, planning permission etc. they'll visit government information sites and other reputable online resources to get that information, if they want to buy materials they'll go to a shop.
It just seems like Google is trying to make every site an information resource - how else are you supposed to get natural links without publishing 'sharable' information - no-one shares links to products really, well not building materials anyway - maybe sexy products like ferrari cars and super-duper laptops or sound systems, but no one is going to go "oh that's a really nice piece of timber, I'll share that with all my friends before I buy it".
Just feels like it's getting harder and harder and more and more expensive to trade online. What's everyone else think?

Hello Luke,
I will have to agree with you since I manage a site with no content section which makes it very difficult to earn links.
What I am doing is to find creative link strategies to earn links. As you mentioned, competing with big names is not easy especially when your budget is limited.
The resource that Tom mentioned are great and I use them a lot, also I would suggest this article that is very interesting and might give you some ideas

Hope it helps

What's everyone else think?
I am building information sites with small stores.... and small stores with lots of information.
My investment in information content pays back slowly as people looking for information find my sites in information SERPs and then make a purchase.
On those information pages you can also make nice money running ads. If you run adsense ads you can block direct competitors or if you run a network like Tribal your competitors will probably not be seen because they don't advertise there.
They seem to be completely geared up to making life much much harder for E-commerce companies to rank organically, and much easier for informational sites to rank organically,
In most of my money SERPs the sites that I have difficulty beating are the big retail and auction sites like Amazon and Ebay..... I have more information on my site for my product line than all of my competitors combined, potential customers can email questions, call us on phone and watch videos about how to use products.... still can't beat the big retailers who simply sell, offer no support, no information and allow all of their customers to come to us for support.... but that is exactly why some people buy from us instead of them - even if we charge more than amazon.
It just seems like Google is trying to make every site an information resource - how else are you supposed to get natural links without publishing 'sharable' information
It seems that you clearly understand the business model needed for success. So, what's stopping you???

I hear you Luke. There's always the option to rely on traffic from other search engines or take the "things were so much better before there was Google" perspective.

Hi Luke
Really sorry you're feeling dismayed with all of this. I've met a number of people who feel the same as you - and I have had my fair share of scepticism recently as well.
On the other end of the spectrum, you see websites using complete spam tactics to rank well and get away with it, which causes no end of frustration for people trying to do the "right" thing, if there is such a thing in SEO.
Acquiring those reputable links in a sustainable way usually does involve sharing information and content that people may want to link to, or offering expertise for people to use you as a source. However, it doesn't have to be just written content you offer.
You might be able to develop online tools that would help loads of people in your industry - for example, think of those that have created free invoice generators and tax calculators. Tools like that are infinatly usable and will get a lot of links. Similarly, a lot of people in the SEO sphere have developed WordPress plugins that many webmasters will find useful, all with a branded link back to the provider's site. So that could be an option.
Online PR could also be an option for you. Every day I see pretty regular requests for people with a knowledge in the housing industry to provide comment or analysis. It may be a bit of a stretch from just building supplies, but if you have the expertise there are a lot of valuable links that can be earned.
Exhaust all the methods you possibly can in this guide and have a look into the Link Club program - these are two great resources for earning links in creative ways.
And if you want, feel free to drop me a private message or an email (email in profile) and we can have a chat about some ways you can go about promoting your business, I'd be more than happy to help
All the best

Should I thank a share on Google Plus (as a business)?
Hi, As all that manage their social channels, I often track some of the posts and how people interacted with them. My question is quite simple: As a business page - Should I thank someone for sharing my post?
Branding | | BeytzNet
I assume it would make them feel worthy and will probably cause them to share again... However, will my page's followers see that I thanked someone (and will doing so annoys them if I now thank 10 different people)...? Who sees a comment my page puts on another person's share? Thanks0 -
Company's Official Facebook Page Doesn't Appear In SERP
Hi, Our official company's facebook page doesn't appear at all, in all serp. I'll elaborate all in details here below. We have an official Arabic Company Facebook page with more than 1.9k likes, the page itself is very active and constantly being updated by a person in charge of the Facebook page. We also have an official English Company Facebook page - runs and operated in the same method mentioned above. when I search for my company's BRANDNAME in google.com.sa - both official facebook pages (arabic + english) don't appear in the serp. I've went through all the way to end of the results pages - I couldn't find both pages anywhere. On the other hand, when I search for the brand name + facebook, like this: BRANDNAME Facebook I can find both Arabic and English facebook pages in the 1st page one right after the other. Anyone can help me out here? I'm desperate for solution. Thanks 😉

Branding Association for SEO, and Google's understanding of a "brand Name"
Hey guys. so I currently run my own business here in Queens NY, for Web Design and online marketing, specifically SEO, SMM, SEM, and some inbound marketing that ties to SMM and SEO. When starting I was in a different business, and had kept my old business name. I plan on re-branding myself January 1st with a brand new name, the name i'm seriously considering is "Media Marketing USA". I was able to purchase MediaMarketingUSA.com. I feel this name is good and bad at the same time, and here are some of the reasons. The pro: Easy to remember, sounds big, and describes my business well. The con: Sounds generic, and I worry it will be hard to brand. I used the mentioning tool provided by Moz and see that nearly everyday 500-1,000 people are naturally mentioning Media Marketing USA, one of my biggest questions is will this give me a competitive advantage in SEO, or will it hurt me in SEO as Google may not see this or understand its a brand name? Do you personally think this is a good name to re-brand myself and use as my main website? The Website itself will be used as a corporate website, a method of inbound and outbound marketing through content creation, Social Media, and of course SEO, targeting specific locations, and specialty services and industries in the NYC area. Please share your thoughts with me, THANKS!!!

How to feature in Google restaurant reviews?
Hi, When I Google a restaurant name here in the UK - try "fat duck bray" I see the photo of the restaurant on the right hand side, the Zagat review score and then right at the bottom of this section there is "More Reviews" with links to Urbanspoon, com, qype.co.uk, Zagat.com and Blackbookmag.com (often TripAdvisor will appear here too.) To one of the sites I work with these are all the competition so the natural question is how would one appear here? I've never seen anything covering this before so interested if anyone else has read anything on this or has any experience on this. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Google auto-correct affecting one of my keywords
Hi there, I have a keyword "finao montreal" that used to rank 8 or 9 in Google serp. All of a sudden it dropped under the top 50 results, I was wondering why and I found out that Google now auto-corrects "finao montreal" to "final montreal". Finao is a well know brand of custom high-end photo albums and I find it strange that Google corrects it. Anyone has an idea on what to do with this situation? Is there a way to provide Google some feedback about the autocorrect?

Google Displays Domain / URL Above Description?
I am seeing a new SERP format from Google. (new for me at least) In the past the title tag would display as the first line of a listing, followed by description and domain / URL. Today I see the domain / URL as the second line. This is placing an emphasis on "Who". If you have a big brand or a great URL this might be helpful to your CTR. Are you seeing this? What do you think of it?

Travel agents are creating Google Place pages for our properties - is this a bad thing?
I'm currently trying to develop a clear understanding and policy for my company on how we deal with Google place pages, specifically where we stand on places pages being created by our agents. We run a business in the travel industry with a number of locations around the world. Our services are sold via travel agents. Naturally, we set up places pages for each of our locations but recently we've noticed agents setting up places pages for these locations with different titles & their own contact details (same address though). In one case we've received verification postcards which we've been asked to pass on. The pages are set up in 'good faith' to promote business in the agents respective countries and languages but i'm concerned that we are ending up with multiple pages for the same location, hurting our brand, losing our own pages through being buried and ending up with our account being suspended at some point down the line. There are a number of terms on Google guideline page, in particular, this one: "Do not create more than one listing for each business location, either in a single account or multiple accounts." I contacted my Adwords account manager but didn't get a very clear response on this. What i'm looking for is some 3rd party, definitive advice/opinions on this scenario. Should we be asking agents not to create place pages? Why should they list.. could it end up hurting both of us? Are there pros and cons to this or is it a clear cut case?
