How do I ascertain how/why a site appears higher/lower in search results, based on different search terms?
-
The site in question is www.bullethq.comHere are the search terms I used, and what position Bullethq.com appears in the SERP's:
<colgroup><col width="188"><col width="58"><col width="95"></colgroup>
| Search-term | Position | Page returned |
| irish payroll online | 5 | Home Page |
| irish payroll online software | 20 | Home Page |
| online irish payroll software | 20 | Home Page |
| online payroll | 75 | (Blog post) |Could someone be so kind as to help me figure this out?

Again, thanks a lot. Your answer is really usefull to me so I very much appreciate it. Rest assured I won't do anything until I have a well thought strategy, based on thorough research.

I don't think you'll be able to find what you're looking for as far as historical ranking data for your site but you can try over at semrush.com. Having taken a very quick look at your site, I'd suggest you get acquainted with redirects--and take some weeks (or more) to read up on the SEO in general before you start making changes to your site. There are lots of things you can get wrong without even knowing if you just jump in without some fundamentals under your belt.

Hi Karl
Thanks very much for your answer. I'm amazed at the quick response I got from yourself and Chris Menke.
I will be making an attempt at optimizing the website in the near future. I want to make sure I've got the right strategy before I do. Also, I will be looking at ways of producing new original content across a number of platforms, that is relevant to the business, and interesting to prospective clients.
Thanks to your advice, I can see that I'm on the right track.
Best

Hi Chris
Thanks a lot for getting back to me.
I just got access to Moz recently. My profile is updated now so my name is now appearing correctly as Chris. I've set up a couple of campaign's so far, just to see how it works. Also, I'm just beginning to build my keyword database, so my Moz campaign's will take time to become really effective.
I've been teaching myself the basics of SEO for the last couple of weeks (using mostly MOZ guides and Blogs), so I'm fairly familiar with the process of optimizing the website etc. already.
I suppose what I was really asking was, can I trace backwards, why this same page is ranking so much higher for this 1 search term, at the present time? It seems to be a bit of an anomaly. I haven't effected an SEO strategy here as yet, so there might be a useful indicator in the answer to that question.
All the best
Chris Fitzpatrick

If everything's already set up and you're ready to start wrapping your arms around the optimization process, Moz's guide to SEO is a good place to start.

How your website ranks for different search terms is based on many things. First of all, I get you at number 2 for "irish payroll online" in Google UK. Google will look at a number of things to determine what your website is relevant for. It will look at the optimisation of the website, so if you want to rank for "irish payroll online software" then you will need to find the relevant page on your website (which I'm assuming would be the homepage looking at the site) and include that term in the key areas (title tag, meta description, H1, Content etc).
Then once you have optimised the website you need to start creating some unique pieces of content and then use them to get in touch with bloggers, key websites that will help drive traffic and sales to the business. As Chris said, setup up your campaign in Moz and look it will explain ways of optimising your website.
Good luck!

Hi John,
I'm wondering if you've set up your first campaign yet. If you haven't done that. use this guide to get started you can enter you domain and keywords in the setup and once per week you'll get your report on the ranking results.

Should I buy an expired domain that has already been redirected to some other website? Can I use it or redirect it to my own site if I purchase it?
I was going to purchase an expired domain but then I came to know that it has been redirected to some other website. I have two questions: Can I build a website around this domain if I purchase it? and will the Domain Authority remains the same ? Can I redirect it to my own site? and will all the Link Juice flow to my site?

I can get hundreds of natural links from real estate agent sites, but should I?
I have a website that generate leads for real estate agents nationwide. I have an auto email that sends out the referral agreement and in the email I ask them to place a link to our website on their site somewhere to be a part of the program. I can get as many as 10-15 links in a few hours in every major city in the U.S. Most realtor websites have websites that are new, or haven't posted blogs and have a Moz domain score of 1 and trust score of 1. I have been thinking of only selecting websites with descent Moz rankings instead of having all agents link to me, even ones with a low moz score. Is it a bad idea to get a bunch of links from legitimate websites that have low Moz scores?

Backlink Query. Unranked pages of High Ranking sites.
Hi, So I was just wondering if someone with more knowledge than myself can answer this question for me. I have a site - currently sat on page 2 of google. On-site optimisation is done, however I am struggling to get backlinks that are from highranking pages. I am new to SEO so need a hand. My understanding of backlinks is that the higher the PR of the site that links to your 'money' site, the better that link is, and that these links are very hard to come by. (something that I am finding). Many times I have found sites that have a high rank and offer for a free listing, only for me to fill in details and get listed on a sub-page that has no ranking whatsoever. So my question is, are these kind of links worth the effort? Do they actually have any effect on rankings? And generally would anyone have any tips on the best sites to get links? Thanks

Google number one search result looks drastically different in firefox compared to chrome
I just noticed this today that some websites and brands look like this on firefox only, and others while still being number one result for their brand name, do not appear like this at all. also, this does not happen over chrome at all. both images provided for comparison are using the same google apps account logged in. It would be nice if someone could shed some light on as to why this happens sporadically and what does it take to be distinguished like this for your own brand if you own the identical domain.com or whatever. Sitelinks Disappeard For My Site
Hi Guys I noticed that all the sitelinks for my site has disappeared. Could it be because of recent changes that I made to the site or maybe because I submitted a new sitemap for my site? Should I ask the googlebot to fetch my site now again after I submitted my sitemap and also ask to re-index it? I also read somewhere else that Google could be re-indexing my site and thus still needs to determine what my sitelinks is going to be. If somebody could please give me some advice on this I would appreciate it. Thanks Dave

Hreview marked snippets are displayed in a new way in search results!
Getting our reviews to show in the serps is starting to become a crusade 😞 After 6 months of submitting our Hreview marked up content, Google responded with that we had a hidden div within the marked up content, to rectify and then resubmit, which we did. 4 months on, we haven't heard anything, and still no sign of our reviews showing up in the search results until today I noticed we now have a review link in the search results (or see attached see image). It's not quite what I was after, so is this Google experimenting? Have we marked something up wrong? Or do we just have to be more patient, so our listing is presented the same as everyone else, such as Qype, Touch, Yelp etc? Seems to be a very painful process! So any pointers very gratefully received 🙂 review-results.gif

How do I "link" up with USA based SEO's
After 28 long years of wait this year I finally made it to the United States of America. I grew up on "The A Team" , "Knight Rider" and Mcdonalds cheese burgers from 2 years onwards. I am as American as a English person could possibly be. It wasn't until I arrived in Florida and spent two weeks in the great country that I understood the difference in the minds and mentality of people. People were nicer ! People on the whole had a can do mentaily. If your a success people congratulate you for it . Unlike the UK.... Plus people were not scared to make a fool of themselves... (People jumping up and down at traffic lights with advertising boards) Now to my question - I loved it so much I want to go back and I figured me and my wife and 3 year old may have a extended break next time where I can work on vacation maybe over a month or so. I would love to get to know as many SEO's and people based in the USA as possible please and introduce myself etc. Hey who knows maybe SEO Moz can change my future (fingers crossed) Thanks to all the people that get in touch !

Alexa Site Audit
Hello All, I run an Alexa Site Audit report for my client. Is it normal that my Alexa site audit report will be public i.e. S3 URL for downloading the PDF file was open to anyone knowing the URL. No re-direct to login etc was there? Yes the S3 URL is funny but Google bots have ways to find this funny URLs so is this normal? If you have tried Alexa can you repeat the problem i.e. typing your S3 report URL? can you get it to? or is it just me. I have asked Alexa about it. I think there should be some security. Thanks.
