What should I do when there is no more stock for a product (e-commerce) ?
-
I´ve several clientes with magento, wp and brazilian Vtex.... usually when a product is out of stock the system allow you to delete or desallow but you will create a 404 erros. There is a plugin to redirect disallow products to home os a personalized page... looks good.
But I´ve just realized when you edit the name (and url) of a product it creats automatic redirect of the product...
Now I´m wondering never delete or disallow a product page anymore.... always edit with a new product so the redirect can send some PR to the new produtc....
Sounds too stupid or make any sense?

In this particular case is a female clothing company that provides new stuff each 3 months, they never repete the products!-)
Thanks for all the answers and I think I wlll customize and improve the user experience by implementing a dynamically-generated message via cookies during a 301 redirect. This would result in users who have landed on expired products receiving a message letting them know that the original product they were seeking is no longer available. This enhances the user experience because it informs users on why they are being redirected.
As I´m working with magento I will try to find a ready to go solution as a plugin but If I don´t, I will make my own and send to the forum !-)
Many Thanks !-)

Your client's would have to OK it but often when products are no longer available it is an internal issue and not a lack of manufacturing. On my sites, if I chose to drop a line I will offer both alternatives if I have any but then also a link to where the exact product can be purchased (rel-nofollow of course).
It is more important to me that customers feel like clicking the link to my shop will never be a waste of time than it is to hope for the occasional conversion to another product.
Once a few click throughs mount up, I also find products I have the that the other shop does not and send a "Hi you may have noticed the X clicks I sent you for X product at URL. I noticed you do not offer X but have content relevant to it. If you think it would help us both out, I would welcome the partnership and be happy to keep sending business your way. I think a link to X would work well "here", let me know your thoughts.
I sell a lot more to people who are looking for exactly what I have then I ever did tried to convincing them that what I have is what they are really looking for.

Two options.
Option 1 - 301 redirect to a similar sub category level pages for that product.
Option 2 - Set up a landing page which states this product is no longer for sale, and show up similar items for sale. this is a common strategy used by group buying sites.
-
In the case where the client wants the product page removed from the site, we've had custom programming to implement 301 redirects, up one category level, so that the customer is take to relevant products in the same category that they were seeking.
-
I agree with Todd unless you have a good recommendations engine. If that's the case, related or suggested products would still provide value to the user even if the product is no longer attainable.
-
If the product will be coming back, I would direct those platforms to simply notify the user on the product page - while keeping the product page indexed.
If the product is not set to return, redirect to a similar product.
Hope this helps.

Product page as homepage
Hello, Is it ok that to use the homepage of website as a product page directly where you present all your products on your homepage or can it penalise you to do that ? and in that case, is it better to have a homepage that you don't rank and create a subpage for your product page. Thank you,

Technical Organization of E-commerce Site
Hi Mozzers! I'm working on a site that is a bit of a mess (http://www.selectequipment.net/) and wanted to ask for some feedback on a couple of items. In addition to organizing the site by product category types, the client also has brand pages that include all products of a certain brand. One problem, however, is that I want to be able to target the relatively large number of consumers who are using searches of BRAND + PRODUCT type in the most optimal fashion. For example, someone looking for "Cutler Hammer Transformers". We have several products with different part numbers that would fit this bill and I'm wondering if we'd be okay just having several products (ie Cutler Hammer Transform 100xa, Cutler Hammer Transform 110xb) or if we'd be better off adding an organizational page for all "Cutler Hammer Transformers for Sale". There are a LOT of different combos that we'd need to do this for. Is it a good call?

Recovery from manual penalty, several sites sell same products
We are still struggling with the consequences of a manual penalty. Here the history we got a manual penalty in September 2013 on our main site kinderwagen.com for unnatural links we cleaned up our link profile and the penalty was lifted in February 2014 we did nothing in terms of link building until December 2014 from December 2014 we started to build natural links, we mostly gave away our products for reviews, that way we built first one content link per month now 2-3 content links per months we expanded our social acitivities on facebook and google plus we started a blog in the beginning of this year and rewrote our guide section For now the results of all this have been very modest. We are basically still stuck where we were after the penalty. In contrast our sites in other languages where we do similar activities perform quite well. There is one difference in Germany (where this kinderwagen.com is) we have other niche sites which partially sell the the same products. We made sure that every product is indexed only once, however it might still hurt the main site. Does anyone have experience in a similar situation or advice what we could do? Thanks in advance. Dieter

Will I lose Ranking if I switch from Volusion to Big Commerce?
I've had a website with Volusion for years and rank in the top position for most relative keywords. I'm planning to move to Big Commerce because of the limitations with Volusion but I'm worried that my rankings will suffer when I move... is this a valid concern and is there anything I should do to make the transition seamless?

Does anyone know how to appear with snippet that says something like: Jobs 1-10 of 80 in the beginning of the description on Google? e.g. like on: https://www.google.co.za/#q=pickers+and+packers

Category vs Product level URL - Does it Matter?
Is there much google juice to be had by moving a key "money making" product up the URL structure? For example, in this URL http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning/Over-50-Life-Insurance.aspx will we gain any juice moving "Over-50-life-insurance" out of the "funeral planning" category and directly to the Domain eg www.over50choices/over-50-life-insurance.aspx ? The page currently ranks on page 2 and 3 for various phrases and we are looking to get to page 1 - its a very competitive set of keywords! Thanks Ash

Should I let Google crawl my production server if the site is still under development?
I am building out a brand new site. It's built on Wordpress so I've been tinkering with the themes and plug-ins on the production server. To my surprise, less than a week after installing Wordpress, I have pages in the index. I've seen advice in this forum about blocking search bots from dev servers to prevent duplicate content, but this is my production server so it seems like a bad idea. Any advice on the best way to proceed? Block or no block? Or something else? (I know how to block, so I'm not looking for instructions). We're around 3 months from officially launching (possibly less). We'll start to have real content on the site some time in June, even though we aren't planning to launch. We should have a development environment ready in the next couple of weeks. Thanks!
