Has anyone had success disavowing old links or competitor spam links and should the disavow tool be used ONLY as a last resort?
-
One of our clients has some shady old links that we just recently discovered with a new link analysis tool. Not sure if they are harming the site or not but given the nature and verocity of the latest penguin updates we want to remove or negate their effects on the site asap. Thanks

Thanks for the info Adam and Kevin. Thomas, thanks for the removeem suggestion, I hadn't heard of that tool before but it looks great.

If you're looking for somebody to confirm Adams answer he's 100% correct. In addition there is a tool called removeem.com that you may want to utilize it is manufactured by a company that is supported by Moz

Great answer Adam. The key is try to manually reach out to webmasters who provides "spammy" links to your website to take them down. Make a record of all correspondence (preferably in Google Docs) to these webmasters to use as proof of trying to comply w/Google's Guidelines.

The disavow tool should not be your first result and it isn't a magic fix all button.
Before using the disavow tool you are expected to try and reach out to webmasters and make manual link removal requests to try and remove as many negative links as possible before using the disavow tool. After all you can't expect Google to just batch dump all the data it sees for your site otherwise their penalties would be worthless.
After that disavow the links, be honest and open in why the links are there and what caused them. If you are lying about it it will be pretty obvious and your disavow likely won't get granted; and if you have been doing something shady that wasn't yet caught it will be when your site is reviewed.
All in all if you have a clean white-hat campaign and have come under some link spam flack then using the disavow tool will be helpful. It's helped a few of my clients survive competitive negative SEO - however, sometimes this simply isn't enough. It won't fix everything, it won't remove all your links and it won't help against any manual penalties.
Once you've cleaned up as much as you can, and ensure you are employing white-hat SEO methods and have your facts in order give it a whirl and hope for the best. That's how the disavow tool plays out.

Anyone use a white label SEO company?
I work on my own and beginning to get more clients than I can handle effectively so this is my first look into outsourcing some of the work. Does anyone have a good resource for white label SEO? Do you have any experience with the following? Others? Sky Diamond Media

Are you affected by the Gov't shutdown or is it just your .gov links?
With the shutdown came the take down of sites such as http://www.usda.gov/ and even: http://nsa.gov/ (even though http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/nsa.gov says its up UPDATE: now down). Those .gov links might not be worth as much (pun somewhat intended) But here comes an actual question as I was thinking about this, I am really curious... Did your SEO efforts suffer in anyway due to the government shutdown, or is it too early to tell yet? PS Isn't it also interesting that Google's homepage is choosing to celebrate Yosemite's National Park 123rd anniversary when all National Parks are to be closed in our nation? Tfe85nN.jpg

Changing Domains - How much link juice is lost with 301 redirect?
My company is thinking about rebranding and moving over to a new domain. While we dont have a lot of backlinks, we do have some very valuable ones that we hate to lose. That being said, I think we are in such an infancy that the backlinks we have shouldnt prevent us from rebranding if thats what we choose to do. I am just trying to get an idea of how moving to a new domain will effect the domain authority if we redirect all the pages? Is the best thing to do simply re-direct, or should we reach out to our most valuable links and let them know the domain/link has changed and hopefully they change their link to us? How much is lost by simply 301 every page? We are getting around 70 organic clicks per day and would rather not start from zero again 🙂

Is there a way to get a list (backlink profile) of all tiny url's that point to my site or a competitors site?
I have noticed that most all links you find in all the major back link profile tools such as OSE or GWM, etc... do not show tiny url's. If there is a service that shows all the tiny urls pointing to your site, can someone please share. It has already been proven that tiny url's do pass link juice, so with that being said... if there is no way to find all the tiny urls that point to a site, wouldn't it be a great strategy to create all my back links with tiny url's to mask my profile from competitors? Thanks!

Any Tool Suggestions for Sharing Bookmarks in a small group?
Hi, We have a small group of co-workers, and we are constantly firing round emails of great articles we have found, new websites to read etc etc. Emails are just very cumbersome and get lost, so I am wondering if people can suggest any tools which would be good for creating a "work board" where we can quickly mark and comment on articles/websites each of us finds and it gets posted across other peoples boards. It needs to be fast, user friendly, allow grouping by topics, visually appealing (and ideally allow you to mark of when you have read something). Anyone have an suggestions as to a tool that would be similar to this? Thanks

External Sitemap Tool?
Can anyone recommend a good external sitemap generator (that is not also a tool owned by a search engine)? I'm looking for a reputable tool that is independent of Google, Yahoo!, Bing, etc that will crawl, index, report problems, but also that will submit to the search engines. Would love to hear what other Mozzers recommend!
