Meta keywords confusion: include none, 3, 5, 20?
-
Over the last few months, I have come across a great variety of opinions on the use of meta keywords in the SEO plug ins or tools I fill out for customers. Some people and organizations advise to leave that field empty, others suggest to use maximum 3 keywords, but I have also heard 5 or maximum 20. I am quite confused about this? Does anyone know Google's latest opinion on this? And what about the other search engines Yahoo and Bing?

Thanks Thomas for all the extra links. I will check them out later!

Dont bother with it. It's not really important. You can rank fine without them
You will find it confusing since most sites that are old and ranking will probably have them lol.

Hi,
As Thomas said in his first comment...your competitors (and I do this when researching for our clients) will use this when trying to see what keywords you are trying to compete for so I always leave it out. There are obviously other ways of seeing this so it's not going to mean they'll never know what you are targeting but it makes them work a bit harder to get the info.
In short...leave it out.

I want to be certain that were talking about the same thing here. Did you mean to say use them in your copy or your text that people would be able to see on your webpage?
If you meant only meta tag keywords please move on below the text however if you weren't keep reading the content and bold
If you were discussing using them on a webpage I'm sorry I mistook your comment for something else and here's some information that you may like.

** Authoritylabs.com as a free keyword checker which is quite fine as does SERPS.com**
You can use my favorite witches scribecontent.com as well it will show you a lot of metrics on how to weight your content the correct way
OR
Did you mean use meta keywords?
essentially if you meant meta keyword tags
you'll find these links are very helpful
http://moz.com/learn/seo/meta-description
the answer is you should have absolutely 0 listed on your website do not put them on their waste of time and they will tell competitors. What you're trying to rank for here's some information on that subject. Along with 2 tools that will help you to generate helpful meta tags like your title tag or the most important if not the most important tag you can possibly choose. This will basically decide where your website ranks and if people click on or not. Very important to get right the others author is very popular now and helpful and do not forget your description which will tell your customers/people browsing the web looking for your site exactly what your site does and why they should go there you have to stick to a blank and these 2 tools will allow you to create the metadata tags correctly as always you do not fill-in the keyword tag unfortunately they all seem to still have this stupid thing as an option
The only search engine that looks at the keywords anymore is Microsoft's Bing – and they use it to help detect spam. To avoid hurting your site, your best option is to never add this tag.

I would never use the keyword box simply for 2 big reasons the 1st one is all you're going to really do is ensure your competitors know what keywords you are trying to rank for that's it.
The 2nd Google has not used it since 2006 to rank anything.
So you're best off leaving the box empty and putting your keywords in your content sparingly and wisely. Check out scribecontent.com it will give you some good hints as to how to add content. And deal with keyword boxes.
I hope I have been of help,
Thomas

What are the top 20 whitelisted SEO content publishing channels?
With Hubpages in the penalty box right now, I am looking for other inbound marketing channels to syndicate original content to relevant audiences. I am currently using SlideShare, but I am looking for other channels. Will you share 10-20 of your recommended content publishing channels that syndicate SEO content? Context: What I need are channels that are: Low to no budget ($0-50 annual, if they exist) Ability to upload SEO content - landing pages, infographics, blog posts, images, videos. Any content type - channels that publish at least 1 of each of the content types I mentioned Targeted, relevant traffic (we would assess that one) Ability to comment, share or vote (Like) the content White-listed by Google, most importantly Examples:

KEYWORDS: How can I find keywords to target now that the majority of searches have been hidden from keyword planner?
Hello Community, I am not an expert and I need some advice. So thank you for your time 🙂 I read that Google is not showing the same amount of search volume data it was showing before (like up until 2-3 weeks ago, after the NSA scandal) and that now it's changed the way we should look at which keyword groups to target since we dont know anymore how many people actually searched for these terms. Say I want to start a new site around the topic "french chocolate" (just joking, but say I want to). How do I find out today which is the most searched term in that keyword group/cluster? I mean this in terms of volume of searches. Please help, I need some guidance on how to approach my content developmente strategy from now on, I always heavily relied on keywords and that got me awesome results in less than a year! Thank you again for your time Best

SERP position confusion
Hi, I am trying to rank on page one on Google UK for the term 'wireless alarms'. the page i have optimised for this terms is www.compoundsecurity.co.uk/security-equipment and i have just completely revamped the text, tags and titles on this in the last 48 hours. It is not showing up in the top 50 yet, but this page http://www.compoundsecurity.co.uk/security-information/gsm-gprs-alarm-systems is showing up in position 47 for some reason. I know i will not get to the top 5 or 6, as these are held by Amazon, Screwfix, Ebay etc., however, i have found something i don't understand. There is one result in position 4 called www.wireless-alarms.net. But his DA is 9 and PA is 24 and links to his site is 3. Our stats are DA 47 and PA 39 and we have 15,000 links. Question. How is his SERP position so high? Also, although i have submited my page (www.compoundsecurity.co.uk/security-equipment) to Google Index, it is not showing the correct page yet. I guess this indexing can take a few days? Any suggestions how i can achieve a better position with the correct page being displayed? I am new to this and on a fast learning curve and want to learn as much as possible. Sorry to keep asking so many questions, but you guys are excellent. Thank you Si

Any thoughts on Penguin 3.0?
Ok ok, so it's just a data refresh and not a major - but does anyone has some additional insight now that the data has been refreshed? Any thoughts about the winners and losers in this one?

Sudden drop in keyword ranking
Since last Friday (09/28/12) all of my keyword ranking is gone. I checked the webmaster and found, among the others, one error "access denied" "1 error found" "server requires login or is blocking googlebot" Im trying to see if this thing has to do with sudden drop of ranking? I have other sites on the webmaster and none of them is showing this type of error. Help will be appreciated. When I check individual urls they are there (indexed).

Google Pushed Out Panda Update 3.9 Last Night
Google said it was rolling out a Panda algorithm last night. New data refresh of Panda starts rolling out tonight. ~1% of search results change enough to notice. More context: goo.gl/huekfHas anyone been affected yet ....I seem to see a jump in some newer sites less than 3 months old already for some rankings - I don't like seeing rankings that quick!Do you see anything?
