Best Moz article on landing pages?
-
From what I understand, building landing pages to link back to sites is a thing of the past. I am looking for a good article that explains best current landing page practices (post Panda and Penquin). Any suggestions?

Hi Courtney,
Reading your question, I'm not quite sure if you are talking about are microsites and doorway pages, or landing pages that target different geographical intent. (I'll assume the later)
It's fine if your client wants to target different geographical areas with specific content. The best practice for this type of thing usually involves:
- Make sure the content lives on your domain (don't create a bunch of microsites)
- Make the content unique and valuable to the specific area you are targeting
- Don't publish the same content just with slightly modifies words (best plumber Houston, best plumber Atlanta, etc) all over the web
If your client wants to publish the same content in different places - ask him/her what they hope to accomplish. Not only does this create duplicate content, but it really doesn't add any value for the end user.
Sounds like your instinct are correct. I don't have a list of articles that act as "proof" that you can show your client, but this article on microsites still holds up pretty well http://moz.com/blog/understanding-root-domains-subdomains-vs-subfolders-microsites
And the dangers of duplicate content: http://moz.com/blog/duplicate-content-in-a-post-panda-world
Hope this helps! Best of luck.

Advantage of Subdomain (Revealed by Experts)
-
A subdomain can point to IP Address (i.e. can have A Record) which can be used to host in the country specific hosting (cloud/blogging platform/shared hosting)
-
It has separate Page Rank, Domain Authority and indexing preferences in Search Engine

These are all great tips. Thanks guys. I still am confused on how to build the URL's. Currently they have a subdirectory for each (25) cities they service. They want a "landing page" for each and the company they are working with wants them to build sub-directories...again...
Essentially they are reinventing the wheel and building them a bunch of subdirectories again. What about subdomains? Would this be a better route for building landing pages for the 25 different cities?

You try the below when creating country specific or sister sites in different geo locations
1. Pricing Information with the Country Specific Currency
2. Date, Time etc with Country Specific Format
3. Vocabulary and Typography
4. Local Testimonials
5. Local Portfolio
6. the company special focus for the local/geo location if any
7. country specific domain (if not restricted)
8. Meta Tag on the page for the country code and language
9. if possible hosting the site in the local hosting provider (if possible)
10. Ofcourse content should be unique but need not have loads and lots of content.
-
it really depends on the context for the landing pages. In the case of franchisees , they, quite often setup local pages and also have links back to the corporate site from the local site. With regards to the local address part, if you're trying to rank for the local listings then not having the address on the site will have an impact on your local rankings.
-
Am I correct in assuming that the whole linking back to the sister site is the wrong way to do it?
I did suggest already to him that even if he has 5 url's to use, that each needs to be treated like it's own website with unique, engaging content. Will he be penalized with a link back to his main site? I know you don't want to inundate the site with links, but maybe one or two links? Will that hurt?
What about placing an address into the landing page? Will it hurt us significantly to not include a local address in the footer of the site? Since he really doesn't have locations in the areas he is targeting....if that makes any sense....How do you localize the content? Just on page?
-
Based on what you're describing, i would advise the client not to go down that route. The idea for landing pages is to drive targeted traffic for a specific campaign with unique information. I would suggest adding some localized content for each of the pages to impact conversion rates and visitor interaction. The unique content will not only lead to a better conversion rate but can be optimized for geo targeted keyword phrases without being perceived as duplicate by Google.

These are great, I will start here. Now how about building them so they are SEO friendly? I read that linking back to sister sites is not a way to do it anymore. My client basically wants to build a lot of pages in different geographic areas, but have the content the same as his main business website (which is a local company). Is he going about this wrong? Would google see this as a bunch of duplicate content with too many links pointing to the main website? I feel like this isn't an approved practice, am I wrong? #newtolandingpages

Google Search Console Not Indexing Pages
Hi there! I have a problem that I was hoping someone could help me with. On google search console, my website does not seem to be indexed well. In fact, even after rectifying problems that Moz's on-demand crawl has pointed out, it still does not become "valid". There are some of the excluded pages that Google has pointed out. I have rectified some of the issues but it doesn't seem to be helping. However, when I submitted the sitemap, it says that the URLs were discoverable, hence I am not sure why they can be discovered but are not deemed "valid". I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions or insights as to how can I go about to solve this issue. Thanks! Screenshot+%28341%29.png Screenshot+%28342%29.png Screenshot+%28343%29.png

PDFs With No Index Contribute To Page Ranks?
I have a question I'm hoping you can help me with. If I upload a PDF and add a no index under the meta robots index so that the PDF doesn't appear in search results when I send people the link to this PDF, does it still contribute to my site traffic/ranking etc? Basically we are deciding whether to put some PDFs with pricing options etc onto our website or on a google drive. We will be sending the links to potential clients. If visitors clicking on the link would still help with increasing traffic and increasing our google rank (without that PDF showing in results) we thought this might be the best solution.

Multiple links from same domain (different pages) considered in credibility of backlinks?
Hi, Let's say there are multiple backlinks from different pages of same domain to different pages of other domain like below: Website A: Page 1 -----------> Website B: Page 1 Website A: Page 2 -----------> Website B: Page 2 Do the pages of Website B pages will get backlinks authority equally or they don't get much backlinks impact as they have multiple backlinks from same domain? There were old school stories that Google ignores second link from same domain.....etc... So, please suggest on this. Thank you. Note: The question is NOT about content relevancy or domain authority score of the backlinks.

Should my canonical tags point to the category page or the filter result page?
Hi Moz, I'm working on an ecommerce site with categories, filter options, and sort options – teacherexpress.scholastic.com. Should I have canonical tags from all filter and sort options point to the category page like gap.com and llbean.com? or have all sort options point to the filtered page URL like kohls.com? I was under the impression that to use a canonical tag, the pages have to have the same content, meaning that Gap and L.L. Bean would be using canonical tags incorrectly. Using a filter changes the content, whereas using a sort option just changes the order. What would be the best way to deal with duplicate content for this site? Thanks for reading!

Same page but appearing in Google with different titles
I have a page ranking on position 1 for a key phrase. The key phrase is the title of the page as well. I'll use a mock key phrase to aid my question - "Teeth and Gums" So the page is ranking number 1 for "Teeth and Gums" and "Teeth and Gums" is the meta title. However, I went ahead and did a new search adding an additional keyword to the original search. When I did a new search adding an additional keyword to the original search, Google has done something weird.. Let's say the search is "Dentistry - Teeth and Gums", Google has ranked my page again as number 1 but changed the title. The title in the search result is now "Dentistry - Teeth and Gums" How and why? It's kinda like Google PPC's keyword insertion but the title hasn't got anything weird like {KeyWord: Dentistry}. It's just "Teeth and Gums" Has this happened to you guys? Any ideas?

Google site links on sub pages
Hi all Had a look for info on this one but couldn't find much. I know these days that if you have a decent domain good will often automatically put site links on for your home if someone searches for your company name, however has anyone seen these links appear for sub pages? For example, lets say I had a .com domain with /en /fr /de sub folders, each seoed for their location. If I were to then have domain.com/en/ as no1 in Google for my company in the UK would I be able to get site links under this or does it only work on the 'proper' homepage domain.com/ A client of mine wants to reorganise their website so they have different location sections ranking in different markets but they also want to keep having sitewide links as they like the look of it Thanks Carl

After on-page is perfect, then what?
I am working on a friend's site and I've optimized his on-page stuff. It's pretty much perfect from SEOMoz analysis. I reduced his Errors from 150+ to 3 and his warnings from 50+ to 0. Notices are at 5. Now, a month has gone by and I've added 3 backlinks in what appears to be reputable sites PR7, PR7, and PR3. His site has dropped from the 2nd listing on the 2nd page to the bottom of the 2nd page now. Now, I realize other sites may be doing seo as well and trying to move to the top, but, seems peculiar. I put in a bit of work to revamp 3 of his pages as well b/c each one had over 300 html validation errors and I reduced it down to 6 or so. The competitor I'm aiming for has these stats: DA: 16 MozRank 3.14 MozTrust: 2.73 My friend's site is: DA: 19 MozRank: 2.21 MozTrust: 2.64 Subdomain metrics is 0 for everything, whereas his competitors have good stats for subdomain metrics. What is that? And what can I do to improve his ranking in Google? Is it just more backlinks? Thanks.

Why would my product pages no longer be indexed in Google?
Our UK site has 72 pages in our sitemap. 30 of them are product pages which take a productid parameter. Prior to 1st Feb 2011, all pages were indexed in Google but since then all of our product pages seem to have dropped from the index? If I check in webmaster tools, I can see that we have submitted 72 pages and 42 are indexed. I realise we should have some better url structuring and I'm working on that but do you have any ideas on how we can get our product poages back into googles index http://www.ebacdirect.com
