The curse of (not provided) data....
-
Buongiorno from 23 degrees C Wetherby UK
Do you ever get the impression Google doesnt Like SEO practitioners? Thing is the (not provided) snag in the key word Analytics data is a complete pain in arse. Yes you can go into webmaster tools and get a feel for organic keyword data but the joy stops abruptly when you need a full picture of traffic acquisition from a specific keyword.
So my question is please:
"When a client asks, give me traffic data acquired from an organic phrase". How on earth can you give an accurate answer? And to add salt into the wound the traffic data is going to be less so your SEO efforts are going to take a hit".Is the answer use another analytics service?
Grazie tanto,

Unfortunately, using another analytics provider won't help, because Google strips the keyword information from the referrer string before it ever hits your analytics software. Hence, no analytics provider will be able to give you that information. (and some theorize this is exactly why Google did it - to stop certain 3rd parties from collecting keyword data that Google itself makes money on)
So what can you do? A few options:
1. Use the data from Google Webmaster Tools: A lot of folks argue (myself included) that the data isn't as usefull, but at least it's something.
2. Urge your client to move away from keyword based reporting. Annie Cushing made an excellent presentation on this topic: http://www.slideshare.net/anniecushing/breaking-up-with-your-organic-keyword-data
3. Use any one of several workarounds to better understand your not provided data. Here's a partial list: http://cyrusshepard.com/7-fantastic-seo-tips-for-googles-not-provided-keywords/
In the end we're likely never to get those keywords back, so we'll have to work with alternative solutions.

One potential way around this is to capture the search term form the URL parameters of the refering URL when a user enters your site from a search engine. But then you need to store that and somehow pass it back to yourselves, and you will not be able to tie it into your analytics data that i am aware off.
Additionally im not sure of the top of my head that the referral URL is sent from firefox or people in private session / logged into Google so if that is the case then this method wont actually help you...

Unfortunately, the power here lies with the user who is performing the search. For example, if they use an incognito window or other method to browse and search anonymously, then this information is not going to be tracked. There's pretty much nothing you can do about it.

Google Trends Data Weird Since 1/1/2022
I am finding several instances of weird data drop offs on Google Trends at 1/1/2022. It seems like it's for data associated with a type/category as opposed to a search term. Here are some examples of "search interest" dropping suddenly off to next-to-nothing for prominent brands. Patagonia / clothing company Lands' End / clothing company Carhartt / workwear company Example screenshot.Capture.PNG Does anyone know what the cause of this is? Has Google stated anything directly about why the data suddenly changed so significantly?

WMT data vs. Analytics
Hi Each month I export my data from WMT and go through analytics. I also export our non brand queries from analytics and not WMT - I haven't had an issue before, but this month the impression data is quite different. In the hundreds of thousands different for keywords, everything seems to have taken a big jump and it seems strange. However, not everything is different, I've spot checked some and its; consistent in both, I'm not sure what's going on? One example would be: <colgroup><col width="281"> <col width="72"></colgroup>

| industrial shelving | 1016 |
| industrial racking | 999 | These appear as impressions from Query data in analytics, but they appear nowhere in my WMT query data. Analytics query data shows: | industrial equipment | 670 | WMT Data: | industrial equipment | 143 | Anyone have any idea? Perhaps some kind of tracking issue? Also I've triple checked dates etc...0 -
Transferring of analytic data
Hey SEOMoz community, Question, we just purchased a business and while we didn't keep their website content we acquired their URLs and will be rebuilding the site. We've asked for and been denied any historical analytic data e.g. they wont transfer admin rights over to us. Is there anyway to access historical data without being made an admin? or do we start from ground zero. One of the reasons we're being given for not being allowed access is that "Google analytics and the associated keywords are the vendor's intellectual property" - given that we brought the brand doesn't that IP transfer over to us anyways? Thanks, PC

Viewing image search data in Analytics?
How do you view image search data in Google analytics? Do you need to apply tracking or can you drill down into the default data? Thanks.

What kind of data storage and processing is needed
Hi, So after reading a few posts here IÂ have realised it a big deal to crawl the web and index all the links. For that I appreciate seomoz.org's efforts . I was wondering what kind of infrastructure they might need to get this done ? cheers, Vishal

If I change the URL of a page, but the old page canonicalizes to the new, do I need to change my Analytics goals to get data?
I changed the URLs of some pages recently (because the same thing that affects the internal anchor text also affects the URL - grr...) but considered it not a big deal because even if I looked at the source code of the old URL, the canonical tag was now pointing to the new one. The question is - if I had URL destination goals set up for those URLs in Google Anlaytics, do I now have to change them? Or does Google somehow know that anyone getting to the new URL is the equivalent of someone getting to the old URL because of the canonical tag that exists on the old URL source code? I still do see goal conversions for some of the old URLs even since I changed them - but it could be that people are still somehow finding the old URL somewhere - or that Google only reindexed it a week or so after I made the change. Any light to shed? Thanks in advance, Aviva B
