Best SEO way to implement multi language store
-
Hi,
I have a magento 1.7 multilanguage store with the following structure:
- www.example.com/nl and www.example.com (Dutch)
- www.example.com/uk (English)
- www.example.com/de (German)
As you can see the dutch language basically has two url and this gives problems according to Roger. Both urls show the same page and therefor duplicate content.
Should i 301 www.example.com to www.example.com/nl ?
And would this not cause problems with the indexing because www.example.com is shown when searching for my keywords.I need to have all three languages to be indexed good and used only for the correct countries.

Im using a script (maxmind geoip) to send users to the correct storefront based on their ip address.
However i would prefer to stop with this because it can be buggy and slow.I think (correct me if im wrong) that i i set the right geotargeting in google webmaster tools AND set up brand related searches per country in a google adwords campaign to the correct storefront this would be enough and i can stop with the script.

Hi Michael - that's right - just create each as a new site. As well as the geotargeting, it'll help if you can get a few links from each country to the relevant version of the site, as well as replacing the Dutch address in the footer with a UK and German address, if you have them.
As for .com or .com/nl, I prefer .com because it looks cleaner. Which would be most user-friendly? Personally I think if someone typed in www.headoverheels-fashion.com and it forwarded to www.headoverheels-fashion.com/nl, and they weren't from the Netherlands, they might be a bit confused. I'm not basing that on any science, it's just an inkling. They may think they can get to an English version of the site by removing the /nl?

Hi Alex,
As for the google webmasters part.
I dont think i can set up geotargeting for each subfolder, right? So should i just add the three different sites?
www.headoverheels-fashion.com/nl
www.headoverheels-fashion.com/uk
www.headoverheels-fashion.com/de -
Hi Alex,
I would prefer to 301 the .com to .com/nl
So I would have the .com/nl .com/uk and .com/de indexed.Would this also be a good solution?
-
I agree with Lesley that has a different domain to target each language but if this is not the choice available then use the 301 from domain.com/nl to domain.com in order to reduce to the duplicate content.
Hope this helps!

I'd forward http://www.headoverheels-fashion.com/nl/ to http://www.headoverheels-fashion.com - your title and meta description are in Dutch so it's obvious it's a Dutch website in the search results.
I prefer using subfolders rather than separate sites as its easier to manage and the link equity all goes to the same domain, instead of being spread around. It's still possible to geotarget Google Webmaster Tools to the subfolders. I think Google's advice is pretty good on this: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/182192?hl=en

From experience the absolute best is to use different domains that are targeted to the country. Like site.uk, site.com.au, ect. I have found that besides being expensive, it works really well, just have different content on each domain.

Best Way to Promote Other Authors SEO?
Wanted to get the communities feedback on this. WDAC is designing a new section of our site. This new section is aimed at helping small businesses that want to get SEO help, but are not in a position financially/do not want to pay an agency for help. The page can be viewed here: http://www.webdesignandcompany.com/expert-seo-tips The page is called "Expert SEO Tips" and we are going to promote other authors content that focuses on high quality articles around SEO tactics, methods, tips, tricks, etc. There are a few articles listed on the page based around what we have shared in the past, but you can see that the page/section is still in its infancy and may change to a new layout/design in the near future. The section will summarize the article we are linking to , and provide a link to the authors Twitter/G+ profile, depending upon what they have setup. We have reached out to a few places in the Google+ communities asking for articles and submissions, but have had little success. Strange due to the fact that we are providing outgoing links without requesting one back...hmmm. Anyway, what do any of you think would be the best way to get people to respond? Also, does anyone see any issues with adding this type of content to our site using followed links, specifically since we are linking out to relevant articles related to our own services? Does anyone see any potential pitfalls? Does anyone have any articles they think would be a great addition or provide help to business owners? All input and insight is appreciated! Looking forward to hearing your input.

What is the best Press Release website?
What is the best press release website for getting a press release in front of writers and news sources? We have used a couple with OK success, but I would like to hear and learn from the experiences of others. Thanks *I am not concerned with the page rank of the press release site or any SEO benefit coming from the PR website itself.

SEO-contests like “hochgeschwindigkeitsSEO” worldwide?
In Germany people out of the SEO industry seem to love SEO contests - the latest one being to bring up the keyword “hochgeschwindigkeitsSEO” on Pos. 1 on Google until a set time (contest entry example here). There obviously is a price (newest iPhone) and a sponsor (Randolf Jorberg), but for the most part it's a contest which holds the Olympic thought: Being there just means most of it 🙂 So I was wondering: are there any other countries where such contests are being held? I have not heard of any examples and I am quite curious if any other SEO communites out there have something similar going on 🙂

When will Rand put out "Art of SEO 2nd Edition"? (ANSWER: IN ABOUT 2 WEEKS)
First edition was printed in the end of 2009. Great Book. Needs updating of course. I would buy the next edition if it was updated in an awesome way that I know Rand and the others would do.

Help on implementing schema.org in our hotel website
Hi, We came across with this schema.org and we decide that it will be helpful in our website if we can implement it properly. But somehow reading through the documents still makes us confused on how to use it. Can anybody show me how to use it? For example in our homepage www.florahospitality.com I can use the itemType Local business on the content but I can also use the itemType Hotel on the Hotel Listing dropdown. Is it advisable the two type at the same time?
