What effect does HTTPS have on SEO for a public site?
-
I have a client who I've been working with for 4 months but getting NO TRACTION at all on their SERPS.
This is unusual for me!
The only difference to their site from other clients is that the whole site is https so I'm wondering if that's making a big difference.
The site is: https://www.cnc-ltd.co.uk
Any help of hints would be great
thanks in advance
Steve

Hi Kevin/Steve
Having a whole https sites tend to take longer to respond to the first byte and load i've found, which seem to be increasingly important in rankings.
I believe this can have an effect if the competition have faster more established sites and you are trying to get above them.
But another train of thought is that google may also trust you more if its a whole https site, so following Kevin's advice and having a https may be the most effective long term, unfortunately clients don't tend to like to wait.
Regards
Paul

Thanks Kevin,
I'll need to work harder to get them some rankings then
Cheers

No, http/https doesn't heavily matter in the serps (https is a bit slower, so the answer is actually a bit). However, it may have to do w/the implementation of the ssl.
Great post on it from Franz: http://moz.com/ugc/seo-for-https-with-s-like-secure
"Do you work on a big company site where everything is within the secure protocol? If so, these are what you have to keep in mind for your onsite optimization:
- If done right, an https site can rank as well as an http site.
- Keep all your certificates valid, all the time, 24/7/365.
- Https sites are more work for the servers, so there is the possibility of a slower download. Keep your site and the certificate on a high performance host. If it takes too long to download a site Googlebot might go bye bye.
- The https-site and the http-site are two completely different sites; it’s a little bit like having a www version of the site and a non-www version. Make sure you have 301 redirects from the http URLs to the https ones.
- The robots.txt is only valid if placed within the same protocol as the site. Place it within the https protocol.
- The same goes for the sitemap.xml, Google verification file, and the other stuff.
Additionally: Keep all your files (images, iframes, etc) within the https protocol. There still is a nasty pop-up in Internet Explorer (6, maybe 7 too) if done otherwise. "

Any tips to maximize the SEO benefit of a 3d model embed service (e.g Matterport) for a realty site?
Hi All, My client grabbed a Matterport camera and I'm trying to get the most out of the embedded models from an SEO standpoint. Other than slapping alt text on iframes, the only thing I turned up was a wordpress plugin that appears to point links you share of the embed (not just the page it is on) back to your own website instead of matterport's. Any thoughts appreciated.

YouTube vs. LimeLight - What are the SEO pros and cons of each platform for on-site video viewing?
Are there any SEO benefits of hosting on-site videos using LimeLight? I know the various benefits of using YouTube but before going forward with a site redesign I want to hear what others have to say. Thanks, Jake

How can I get Google to forget an https version of one page on my site?
Google mysteriously decided to index the broken, https version of one page on my company's site (we have a cert for the site, but this page is not designed to be served over https and the CSS doesn't load). The page already has many incoming links to the http version, and it has a canonical URL with http. I resubmitted it on http with webmaster tools. Is there anything else I could do?

If you are organizing the site structure for an ecommerce site, how would you do it?
Should you use not use slashes and use all dashes or use just a few slashes and the rest with dashes? For example, domain.com/category/brand/product-color-etc OR domain.com/anythinghere-color-dimensions-etc Which structure would you rather go for and why?

Questionable SEO
Chess Telecom appears first when you search for 'business phone lines' in the UK so I used a campaign to check them out. It seems they've got tons of unrelated links and using comment spamming to increase their ranking. Along with fake twitter accounts and other things. Search for 'jewel jubic chess' and you'll see what i mean. I assumed this wasnt a good idea and been trying to get my link on relevant websites only. Any comments or suggestions? Should I simply trust that google will hopefully punish them eventually? Or should I be fighting fire with fire? Thanks Dan

Site Crawl
I was wondering if there was a way to use SEOmoz's tool to quickly and easily find all the URLs on you site and not just the ones with errors. The site that I am working on does not have a site map. What I am trying to do is find all the URLs along with their titles and description tags. Thank you very much for your help

How much of an issue is it if a site is somehow connected to a site that was penalized by Google?
I am working with someone that is about to launch a new site, and one of the sites was affected by the Panda update. Does it matter if the two sites are connected? Share the same hosting provider and same Google Webmaster's account?
