Number of Items As a Google Ranking Factor??
-
If I search for "hiking boots" and scan down the SERPs I see the following...
-
Google reports "483 items" for the Zappos.com page.
-
Google reports "Results 1 - 36 of 85" for the Shoebuy.com page (and that does not appear in their code).
So, Google is obviously paying attention to the depth of your information or the number of items that you are showing. If they think that is important enough to count and report in the SERPs, might they also be using that information as a ranking factor??
PRACTICAL APPLICATION FOR SEO: If google is using this information, perhaps people should list all of their color, size, etc variants on a single page. For example if you sell widgets in five colors, instead of making one page for each color, list all five on the same page.

-
You can place a general description at the top of the page under a large detail photo. Then down below - beside each color photo example you can talk about the pretty turquoise blue color of this item and how it is great paired with tan slacks (don't give a specific item there because it be discontinued, but you can link to search results or a color category page).
-
If OZ sends you a pm with these unique descriptions, would you please blog about it in 90 days?
-
I like that idea in theory and in practice for some sites. But in practice for most of the sites I deal with I have enough trouble trying to get buy-off for custom copy on each product page, let alone five or ten totally unique, separate descriptions that don't all sound boilerplate.
I'd love to see a few examples though if you don't mind sharing. You can PM me if you like.
Cheers,
Everett

Thank you, Everett. Interesting ideas.
When I have a product that is available in several colors of styles I include all of them on one page but have separate, descriptions, product photos and buy buttons. I am doing this with the hope that it will make it easy for customers to see all options at once but also to make a much richer-appearing page for Google.

EGOL,
Great question / observation. I'm curious about this too, but do not know how a test could be designed that would rule out other factors. Glancing at the SERPs, I don't see any indication in terms of placement that this is a major factor since results #2, #3 #5-#7 don't have that data, but that isn't exactly scientific. On the other hand, those that do have it seem to be ranked in order of the total amount of items (i.e. 578 Amazon, 484 Zappos, 85 Shoebuy).
Regardless, nine times out of ten I recommend having a single product page with variables as something the user can choose from a drop down, as opposed to different pages. With this approach, in light of your question, it might be worth considering the option of having all of the variables listed as individual product pages on a category page, and using a rel canonical tag on the product pages to canonicalize them all to a single product page. This way you inflate your count on category pages, while avoiding the issues inherent with having separate pages for each variant.
-
I quite wouldn't say # of items be the right approach, but rather 'average customer rating' as a combination of # of items would be useful. Mere item-count is easily inflatable by publishers/eCommerce to get its ranking up.
My 2 cents.

Question: About Google's personalization of search results and its impact on monitoring ranking results
Given Google's personalization of search results for anyone who's logged into a Google property, how realistic and how actually meaningful/worthwhile is it to monitor one's ranking results for any keyword term these days?

Home page rank for keyword
Hi Mozers I have traded from my website balloon.co.uk for over 10 years. For a long while the site ranked first for the word 'balloon' across the UK on google.co.uk (first out of 41 million). Around the time Penguin launched the site began to drop and currently sits on about page 5. What's confusing is that for a search on 'balloons' ('s' on the end of balloon) it ranks 2nd in the location of Birmingham where I'm based. That's 2nd in the real search rather than a map local search. But - if I search 'balloon' from the location of Birmingham my contact page ranks 5th: http://www.balloon.co.uk/contact.htm but the home page ranks nowhere. So - it's gone from ranking 1st nationally to ranking nowhere with my contact page ranking above the home page (which is a generic word domain). Any ideas?

How important is Social Media for building domain authority / Google rankings? Are there any cases?
I really would like to know if someone tested the importance of Social Media for Google rankings.

Are there some sites who build authority only by doing good social media?
Ofcourse, I know it is all about the mix (content, linkbuilding, social media, etc.) but how important is it?
I know many sites who rank good without any form of social media, but I do not know any sites who do only social media and rank high. I hope there are some good cases which give good insight. ps. I know it becomes more and more important...0 -
Intermittent ranking drops.. up and down and once again..
So.. For the last several weeks (I noticed March 11th), we are having some weird ranking drops. Our keywords will drop overnight from their usual position between 2-6 to further than 200 and then be back to normal a couple days later. We use Sheerseo to track daily ranking. I track about 15 KW everyday and noticed it happening then. Is this part of the recent changes? I am just really puzzled that we are seeing drops and then going back to normal and then drops again. It is hard to know where you stand with such drastic differences day to day. Any ideas?

Has anyone experienced a dramatic decrease in Google rankings followed by a dramatic increase in the past few days?
I don't want to be one of those whiny people always asking about rankings, but for the first time in a while, I've seen some crazy fluctuations in Google rankings. I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences lately.

How To Rank High In Google Places?
Hello SEOmoz, This question has been hounding me for a long time and I've never seen a single reliable information from the web that answers it. Anyway here's my question; Supposing that there are three Google places for three different websites having the same categories and almost same keywords and same district/city/IP how does Google rank one high from the other? Or simply put if you own one of those websites and you would want to rank higher over your competitors in Google places Search results how does one do it? A number of theories were brought up by some of my colleagues: 1. The age of the listing 2. The number of links pointing to the listing (supposing that one can build links to ones listing) 3. The name/url of the listing, tags, description, etc. 4. The address of the listing. 5. Authority of the domain (linked website) You see some listings have either no description, and only one category and yet they rank number one for a specific term/keyword whereas others have complete categories, descriptions etc. If you could please give me a definite answer I will surely appreciate it. Thank you very much and more power!

Is there a way to know what rank my site is listed on google ?
My current client web page was listed at the 4th page 1 month ago. Im trying real hard to make him understand that the traffic from beiing on the first page is important and that he need to give me additionnal ressource to make it happen ( i don't prog at all). So i had the idea of checking every page to see whats is current rank. but instead of looking from page 1 to page X, i was wondering if there was something somewhere that could give me my rank right away. It woud help saving time. Thx.
