Updating old dated pages or making new ones?
-
Hey All,
I'm working on a project that relies on deals with specific dates like a fair or rodeo. However, fairs happen every year during the same time. I'm not sure if I should delete the old ones or updated them with new information. What do you suggest?

This does help. Thank you for taking the time to answer!

This is great thank you for the insight!

If you have great links pointing to the old dated pages, just update them with new information. Generally its better not to have outdated info on your site, but sometimes pages are left, even if dated, as they have great links pointing to them. This gives you best of both, as long as the link does not say site.com/fair-2012 and you are adding new info to it. Might want to keep it general and not date specific.
Hope this helps

Place these pages on a permanent URL. Then update the content of that page as needed.
If you change the URL then all of the people who linked to your event page will then see their links hit old information or hit an error page if you delete the page. And, you don't want to do a new redirect every year.
We link to some academic sites that change their URLs frequently. We are always cussing about them.

Second anchor text on page. Does it count?
Back in 2008 there was "proof" that the anchor text of a second link on a page would not be counted for the anchor text.
Link Building | | Stramark
In the MOZ starter guide it is still advocated: https://moz.com/learn/seo/anchor-text BUT in 2014 it was reported on searchengine land:
http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-one-page-two-links-page-counted-first-link-192718
That the second link might be counted. Direct link to the matt cuts video from 28 may 2014

https://moz.com/blog/the-first-link-counts-rule-and-the-hash-sign
https://moz.com/ugc/3-ways-to-avoid-the-first-link-counts-rule (2011) Question: did anyone recently test this recently? The deeper questions are:
1:is the LINK value counted if you have more that one link on a page to another page?
2: is the Anchor text counted if you have more than one anchortext to another page? The most interresting i have is that i have a menu from which i link to my important pages. Does it help to put extra links in the content to specific pages?1 -
What are some Boilerplate Link-Building Activities for a new site?
Assuming you have built a new sophisticated site that involves high user engagement as in bounce rate < 30% sophisticated genuine content (pages > 2000 chars) best possible site speed what are some of the boilerplate link building activities you would execute under which considerations? Activities: I am thinking of things along the lines of building X social media links using a fiverr submission to curated link directories reach out for high quality links with thought leaders etc Considerations: I am thinking of things along the lines of keep a constant link gain velocity over the first 3 months make sure you place links across pages not just the root domain make sure you have a mix of follow and no-follow links and a natural anchor text distribution In short I am hoping we can crowdsource a linkbuilding starting guide in the SEO world of 2015. /T

Advice needed on making some pages more relevant...
Hello - and sorry to bother you all. I am learning on my feet with SEO, but gradually getting there. I have started a directory for musical instruments and need to make the profile pages for dealers as relevant as possible (their instruments are doing well, but profile views less so). The following link is an example. http://www.amati.com/music-shops/dealers/dealer/turner-violins.html all of them can be found here: http://www.amati.com/music-shops/dealers/page-1.html We are putting in a search box to help with functionality, but if any one can give me an idea how to make these profiles super then I would be enormously grateful! Best wishes, James

Diluted Link Pages
When looking at a competitor's links, is it worth the time to try to get listed on sites they're listed on if all they seem to be are pages with links? Here's an example: http://blacktieaffairlimousines.com/links.html I'm finding a lot of these, along with other low quality links from sites in other countries such as China, that have nothing to do with their business. This is for a self storage company. Most of what I'm finding are what seem to be more "old school" link building (farming).

Same Page, Multiple URLS- Canonical tag? Redirect?
I just read this article about how google views multiple versions of the same page as different pages of duplicate content. My website, www.telikin.com currently has many versions of the home page. There is: www.telikin.com
Link Building | | Telikin
www.telikin.com/index
www.telikin.com/index.php
www.telikin.com/index.php/ All of these seem to be their own URLS, If i use the open site explorer tool to search for links pointing to these URLS, the www.telikin.com domain shows about 700 links, and the www.telikin.com/index.php shows about 63 links. My questions: Is my SEO suffering as a result of having these different pages? Does google realize that links pointing to www.telikin.com/index.php should count towards the seo of the www.telikin.com page? If this is hurting my company's website, how do I solve this problem? I am not versed as a webmaster, so I don't understand what the best course of action would be. Should I request that our webmaster somehow redirects all traffic from the other URLS to the main www.telikin.com URL? Should I be using canonical tags on all important pages? If i do, for example, use a canonical tag on the www.telikin.com page, will Google then know to send all link juice from the www.telikin.com/index.php page to the www.telikin.com page? We also have a Joomla blog that seems to duplicate pages many times over, but that is a problem that I will have to address another time. Any comments/suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks, Dave0
