Best Practices for Getting Shares, Likes, Etc on Social Media?
-
I wanted to know what the best practices are for getting people to re-tweet, like, share, and google plus your website.
What has worked best for all of you, and what has worked not so well?
Thanks!
-
Keith,
Thanks for your quick response.
Do you recommend share buttons or like buttons that have a count next to them on the website, rather than the ones that do not?
-
Agreed on timing. Here's a trendy little infographic we did that might be helpful: http://www.fannit.com/social-media-infographic-when-are-the-best-times-to-post/

Yes, we use the sharebar for our wordpress sites (you can find HTML code as well)! It's a must have. I'm sorry I forgot to mention that in my original answer but you really should have some sort of share function that includes some or all of the following:
Google Plus
Like
Tweet
Pin
Stumble
RedditLook at the 2013 factors for ranking that MOZ just put out. The social shares have a big impact on rankings now..especially Google Plus http://moz.com/blog/future-of-search-ranking-factors

So here's part two of my question.
I work mainly for auto dealerships and we do have buttons on them that have the facebook logo, the twitter logo, etc.
I've noticed that by contrast there are buttons on sites with a share, or retweet count on them. Do those serve as better calls to action to encourage people to share or like, etc?
Thanks!

- Create original content. Have some unique perspective. There is no substitute. Original is important than "amazing" as what is "amazing" is different to different audience. And if more people are sharing your content who cares if that was amazing to you or your company.
- Timing: One of single most overlooked factor. If you try creating/seeding content different time, different days you will see which days/time work for you. To run a test we shared same content, same network but at different times., The difference can be huge. We have seen swings of 1200% based on time.
- It gets better as you get some traction. social proof networking effects clearly helps as you get more shares.
- Don't try to create content for the planet. Identify a niche audience initially and target them

Promoting the heck out of your posts! : ) Here's a little insight into our social promotion. Basically, we took our website from about 300 hits per month to over 4000 in a 30 day period by doing social promotion with the following method:
1. Create an amazing article (curated content or developing your own) - Before you just pick anything off hand go check the social spaces to see what your target market is sharing on social spaces. Now you know what people like!
2. Develop an infographic on the article as well - You'll be able to promote your infographic on sites like visual.ly which may get featured to their user base. Not only that, visual,ly ranks incredibly well for content in the SERPS. Visuals really help people engage better with your content. You'll hit people who would rather look at a visual as well as the people who who may want to dig a little deeper into your article.
<address>3. Social Promotion - Ok this is a big list of promotion tactics that we use.... and it works really well (if you have good content). This is a link to my guide http://www.fannit.com/smm/social-media-marketing/. Basically, it's a checklist of things you can do to automate the process a bit. I'd stick it on here but... it's really big.</address>

Best Way to Promote Other Authors SEO?
Wanted to get the communities feedback on this. WDAC is designing a new section of our site. This new section is aimed at helping small businesses that want to get SEO help, but are not in a position financially/do not want to pay an agency for help. The page can be viewed here: http://www.webdesignandcompany.com/expert-seo-tips The page is called "Expert SEO Tips" and we are going to promote other authors content that focuses on high quality articles around SEO tactics, methods, tips, tricks, etc. There are a few articles listed on the page based around what we have shared in the past, but you can see that the page/section is still in its infancy and may change to a new layout/design in the near future. The section will summarize the article we are linking to , and provide a link to the authors Twitter/G+ profile, depending upon what they have setup. We have reached out to a few places in the Google+ communities asking for articles and submissions, but have had little success. Strange due to the fact that we are providing outgoing links without requesting one back...hmmm. Anyway, what do any of you think would be the best way to get people to respond? Also, does anyone see any issues with adding this type of content to our site using followed links, specifically since we are linking out to relevant articles related to our own services? Does anyone see any potential pitfalls? Does anyone have any articles they think would be a great addition or provide help to business owners? All input and insight is appreciated! Looking forward to hearing your input.

Email marketing - ready to get serious about this
Ok, I have my PILE of business cards from Chamber of Commerce meetings and different networking events I have attended. I have 8-10 blogs that are worth sharing on my website - www.sawwebmarketing.com (I realize that's a pathetically low number) I am committing to and excited about blogging MUCH more starting today! I have a huge list of ideas. I am adding a signup to my site and putting up a pop up to collect addresses. I have 15-18 clients that are paying me for ongoing seo / Internet marketing (or simply had my team build a new site for them) AND AN ACCOUNT WITH AWEBER I HAVE USED ONCE! 🙂 Where do I start!? Any advice? I want to start building a LIST of subscribers and grow my list by sharing great advice, strategies and tips to help people put their website to work. A) Send one email to EVERYBODY (ongoing clients, past clients, contacts who subscribe, website visitors, blog subscribers) or customize my messages for different groups? B) Put whatever I want to share on my blog and share it via social media AND send an email to my list inviting them to check out what I posted so I get the most bang for my time? (LINKS BABY!) I feel like an idiot I haven't got on this sooner but truly ANY ADVICE from somebody who has been there and done it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! 🙂 Thank you! So, Google is the best site on the internet.. Right? Or is that just what most people tend to think off-face?
LOL woah, put the guns away. I'm not about to rant, I just have a question and wanted to present it well. Then again, I might have actually found some easy fixes to some of Google's tools that they could make. So here's the thing. I noticed how annoyed I always getting when I have to sign in every time I go to the adwords keyword tool, or analytics. Why do you have to sign in a million times? I think it is a problem that can be fixed because if you go to check your webmaster tools, you go straight into your account, where you can then select which site you want to explore. It knows that I am already signed in to Google Accounts when I go to webmaster tools, but it doesn't recognize that fact when I go to my Analytics account, or to use the Adwords Keyword Tool. Now, every site has things that they need to work on, but not necessarily that need to be 'fixed'. Google being so commonly accepted as the best site on the net, I thought it was funny/interesting at the least to point out the problem. Even funnier is the fact that I could submit it as a problem to see if they could fix it or not, but they do such a good job of making it hard for people to contact them, that A) I don't feel like wasting my time trying B) I don't even really know if it is possible to do that. Also, why is there no official Google Analytics App / Mobile site?? Google has been pushing how important mobile is to us webmasters, but then it doesn't seem to be very high on their priority list for the tools that we use. I mean you can't view graphs on phones / tablets (mine at least), in webmaster tools, OR google analytics. Also, its a pain in the but to click the sign in button on Google Analytics when using my phone / tablet, it disapears really fast for me (needs more research from others to see if everyone has the same problem) Thanks for the interest / answers everybody. Look forward to hearing from you guys. Also, tips and help would be nice if anybody knows a solution to my sign in issue

How elated do you get?
So I was wondering, as from time to time I get a tiny bit excited if I manage to gain a new link that I've tried hard to get or I manage to outrank that **** that has been stuck at number 1 for so long or if I managed to do some A/B testing which has led to more leads and conversions. Does anybody else cheer inside or even have a short outburst of YEAAAH! f*** you Wikipedia! when they do something worthwhile? I may be on my own here..

Any Tool Suggestions for Sharing Bookmarks in a small group?
Hi, We have a small group of co-workers, and we are constantly firing round emails of great articles we have found, new websites to read etc etc. Emails are just very cumbersome and get lost, so I am wondering if people can suggest any tools which would be good for creating a "work board" where we can quickly mark and comment on articles/websites each of us finds and it gets posted across other peoples boards. It needs to be fast, user friendly, allow grouping by topics, visually appealing (and ideally allow you to mark of when you have read something). Anyone have an suggestions as to a tool that would be similar to this? Thanks

What is the best method for getting pure Javascript/Ajax pages Indeded by Google for SEO?
I am in the process of researching this further, and wanted to share some of what I have found below. Anyone who can confirm or deny these assumptions or add some insight would be appreciated. Option: 1 If you're starting from scratch, a good approach is to build your site's structure and navigation using only HTML. Then, once you have the site's pages, links, and content in place, you can spice up the appearance and interface with AJAX. Googlebot will be happy looking at the HTML, while users with modern browsers can enjoy your AJAX bonuses. You can use Hijax to help ajax and html links coexist. You can use Meta NoFollow tags etc to prevent the crawlers from accessing the javascript versions of the page. Currently, webmasters create a "parallel universe" of content. Users of JavaScript-enabled browsers will see content that is created dynamically, whereas users of non-JavaScript-enabled browsers as well as crawlers will see content that is static and created offline. In current practice, "progressive enhancement" in the form of Hijax-links are often used. Option: 2

In order to make your AJAX application crawlable, your site needs to abide by a new agreement. This agreement rests on the following: The site adopts the AJAX crawling scheme. For each URL that has dynamically produced content, your server provides an HTML snapshot, which is the content a user (with a browser) sees. Often, such URLs will be AJAX URLs, that is, URLs containing a hash fragment, for example www.example.com/index.html#key=value, where #key=value is the hash fragment. An HTML snapshot is all the content that appears on the page after the JavaScript has been executed. The search engine indexes the HTML snapshot and serves your original AJAX URLs in search results. In order to make this work, the application must use a specific syntax in the AJAX URLs (let's call them "pretty URLs;" you'll see why in the following sections). The search engine crawler will temporarily modify these "pretty URLs" into "ugly URLs" and request those from your server. This request of an "ugly URL" indicates to the server that it should not return the regular web page it would give to a browser, but instead an HTML snapshot. When the crawler has obtained the content for the modified ugly URL, it indexes its content, then displays the original pretty URL in the search results. In other words, end users will always see the pretty URL containing a hash fragment. The following diagram summarizes the agreement:
