How come this one google places listing is the only one to show up google maps?

Hi there,
I found a really weird thing about google places.
I'm working on a google places listing optimization for a locksmith company in Houston, TX.
When I was searching google maps for "locksmith houston" only one listing came up.
However, when searching for "locksmith near houston" 880 results came up.
This changes from time to time, but most of the time this one competitor is the only listing that shows up which is really really weird.
Anybody has an idea what this competitor did to get rid of the other 879 results and show up alone on google maps??

I agree with Miriam. There is a company in Phoenix that calls themselves "Phoenix SEO" in the maps- even though that's not the name of the company. When you search for Phoenix SEO, one company dominates the search. Very odd. But it will surely be worked out.

Hi Gidon,
What you are seeing is likely part of the recently documented phenomenon of the Hummingbird update. Since that time, a ton of broad searches like this are, for some reason, returning a single one box result instead of the more typical 3 or 7-pack type of local result. You'll actually see this locksmith coming up as the only result in Google's main search engine as well as the Maps display you did the screenshot of. There isn't anything you can do about this, so far as I know, because it appears that Google's algo is currently turning up these odd results for numerous terms, but you can read more about the issue here:

I recommend you read both posts and all their attendant comments. I'm afraid businesses finding themselves affected by results like this can't do much beyond hanging in there until Google does another tweak to remedy this problematic lack of diversity in the SERPs, but at least you will see from reading the above posts that you are not alone. I hope Google pays attention to this promptly. It's not a good user experience.

It may seem odd, but you are searching for 2 completely different terms, "locksmith houston" and "locksmith near houston" aren't the same. Therefore, Google will only show relevant results for what is entered and the "near" to Google could be all of the surrounding cities, towns, villages, etc where there is a locksmith. However, I just did a search for several key phrases and "houston tx locksmith" is showing a TON of results, but "houston locksmith" is only showing the same one you are seeing.
I don't think it's a matter of the competitor getting rid of any results as they do not have that power. I think it's a matter of how they optimized both their website and their G+ page combined with the poor optimization of the other locksmith websites and G+ pages.
Perform some more keyword research to see who is showing for what keywords both in the natural SERPs and the Google Maps listings. Then go after the ones which suite your/your client's goals.

Deceptive site warning from Google: Java script and meta descriptions deployed.
Hi all, We received a deceptive site warning from Google recently. Seems like there is a deceptive content on some pages of the website. Some pages are removed from Google index. Meta descriptions have been deployed on the site few days ago. There is also java script on the website which we use for tracking visitors like GA. I wonder what's the reason for this alert? We believe its due to the Java script. Do you think meta descriptions will harm this bad? Any ideas? Thanks

How does Google treat significant content changes to web pages and how should I flag them as such?
I have several pages (~30) that I have plans to overhaul. The URLs will be identical and the theme of the content will be the same (still talking about the same widgets, using the same language) but I will be adding a lot more useful information for users, specifically including things that I think will help with my fairly high bounce rate on these pages. I believe the changes will be significant enough for Google to notice, I was wondering if it goes "this is basically a new page now, I will treat it as such and rank accordingly" or does it go "well this content was rubbish last time I checked so it is probably still not great". My second question is, is there a way I can get Google to specifically crawl a page it already knows about with fresh eyes? I know in the Search Console I can ask Google to index new pages, and I've experimented with if I can ask it to crawl a page I know Google knows (it allows me to) but I couldn't see any evidence of it doing anything with that index. Some background The reason I'm doing this is because I noticed when these pages first ranked, they did very well (almost all first / second page for the terms I wanted). After about two weeks I've noticed them sliding down. It doesn't look like the competition is getting any better so my running theory is they ranked well to begin with because they are well linked internally and the content is good/relevant and one of the main things negatively impacting me (that google couldn't know at the time) is bounce rate.

Vanish from google after choosing preferred domain and fixing 40 duplicate meta descriptions?
I recently followed 2 Google webmaster suggestions to clean up the on page SEO for our site. I chose a preferred domain 2 weeks ago(to www.website.com) and fixed the duplicate meta descriptions that our CMS was setting to unique and more natural descriptions for each page. I did that 3 days ago. Webmaster tools still says they are duplicates because it hasn't crawled the whole site yet. We have been fortunate enough to have some of our blog posts be covered by yahoo.com, cnet.com, huffingtonpost.com, gizmodo.com, etc. That is some major backlink juice and, as recently as 2 weeks ago, our website would be the #1 result when searching Google for "ourwebsite.com exact title of very popular blog post". Now it is on the 3rd page, and the top results are the websites that linked to our blog post. So....what gives? Is there a specific area I should look at? Our should I wait for Google to fully index our whole site now that changes have been made? It should be noted that our rankings have stayed the same in yahoo and bing. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Google ranks our competitor above us on 1000's of branded queires!!!
Hi all, I have noticed a very bizarre phenomenon in Google SERPs. When I search for a branded keyworks [Product + our brand].

Amazon.fr appear above us on thousands of results. Google even ranks Amazon above us for queries like [ PriceMinister google plus]. I have tried to ask Google about it but I can’t seem to get an answer. Here is the topic I posted on Google’s forum: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/webmasters/crawling-indexing--ranking/DFvTPr14o_o This seems like a mistake on Google’s side, some kind of semantic association with our two brands! Basically they are sending our customers to our main competitor even though they specifically searched for our brand (PriceMinister). Google Places rankings go away, but organic rankings stay the same / get better?
Hello, I hope you all can help me out here with the information I could provide. Anyways, the past number of months I have had 1 of our clients rank extremely high organically and on Google places. For example: My client is a law firm so if you search “CLIENTS-TOWN Attorney” they would come up organically on the first page and if you were in that town and search “CLIENTS-TOWN Attorney” or even just “Attorney” they would also come up in the Google Places list. Now for some reason starting a week ago I noticed they have completely disappeared from Google Places. No changes have been done to their site and everything is the same as it was. Their organic searches are the same if not better than before. Do you guys have any clue as to why this happened and how I could possibly turn this around? Thanks for your help in advance!

Hi, first time I've posted a question, New EU Laws governing cookies; will Google Analytics still be usable after May 25th? - apologies in advance if its already been covered, but I couldn't find any answers when I searched - google search showed someone else ask the question already, but no straight answers were given:- From May 25th the Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive will come in to force which prohibits the use of cookies without informed, prior consent from web users. I've been trying to research to see whether or not this will affect Google Analytics.The Directive seems to be designed to prevent behavioural tracking, rather than web stats, but after reading the directive (with no law experience) I'm fairly confused by what will be prohibited. If anyone has any thoughts on the matter, I'd be very grateful! 🙂

Google showing malware attack, how to remove ?
Someone just reported that our website was showing malware attack page on their browsers. We checked and saw a bad php code on the above of our index.php file. We removed it and made it clean. Still all the visitors are getting malware attack page. How to fix this ? Site is already clean.
