Added the Review rich snippet and rankings have dropped?
-
Hi Mozzers,
I am really surprised what happened here. I conducted a small campaign by adding reviews rich snippet to 10 different microsites(covering different locations). Today I was checking if the snippets were showing up correctly in the SERPs and noticed that most of these locations with review snippet dropped in the rankings?
How weird is that?
Can anyone explain what happened here?
Has anyone experienced this?
Thank you!

Hi guys,
Thank you for your great responses! It is actually what I was thinking, nothing to do with the implementation of rich snippet but because Miriam mentioned that you're not supposed to take reviews from third parties then I am little concerned about this. So my question is then where are you supposed to take them from? What is the purpose of the review rich snippet then?
I actually took those reviews from Customer lobby and they aren't duplicating anywhere!
@Takeshi: The implementation of the rich snippets were made last week and checked the rankings around the same time.
Thanks!

Hi Taysir,
I agree with Takeshi that it's unlikely that adding rich snippets could cause a ranking drop. I'll add two provisos to this here, however. Is it possible that:
-
You are duplicating testimonials across all these microsites? In other words, using a testimonial on more than one website, thus creating a duplicate content issue?
-
You are re-publishing third party reviews (gained from places like your Google+ Local page) on the website as rich snippet-encoded testimonial? This isn't allowed.
Either of these practices could harm your rankings, but if you've correctly implemented rich snippets in a non-duplicating manner, then I can't imagine any way in which these would have caused your rankings to drop. I want to let you know that, right now, there are MAJOR changes going on in Google's Local results - a big shakeup of some kind, likely with more changes to come. It could be that your sites are getting bounced around in the process. If you feel all of the practices you are using are allowed, I'd hang on for a couple of weeks before I got really worried, and wait to see what happens.
Regarding the shakeup, you might want to read:
I recommend that you read the whole long thread as it contains many discoveries and conjectures that anyone in Local should be up on right now.
Hope this helps!

How long ago was this, and over what time period are you looking at rankings?
Unless you were previously doing something deceptive, my guess is that the rankings drops have nothing to do with the rich snippets. Google's algo changes all the time, and rankings fluctuate all the time. It's easy to try to draw some kind of cause & effect relationship here, but likely the results have nothing to do with the rich snippet code (assuming you implemented it correctly).

Hello Everyone, I am amazed to see that all the ranking of keywords got down after Penguin webspam algorithm updated on May 22, 2013. Is there any suggestion how we will recover and get the ranking back. Thanks

Monthly Searches in Rankings Tab
Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to SEOMoz, so my apologies if this is a very obvious question. I'm trying to find out how to do a report that shows both the ranking of my keywords as well as the monthly searches in Google or the other search engines. Is there an option for this? Thanks in advance!

Is anybody else seeing large scale rankings drops in Bing this week?
I track around 1000 keywords for this site, and my rankings in Bing dropped for about half of them on Wednesday. No major changes have been made to the site, rankings are maintaining or improving in Google for a majority of these same terms. The average drop seems to be around 9-12 places, which to me signals more than just standard fluctuation. Anyone else seeing anything strange with Bing this week? Or does anyone have any ideas? I looked for posts about an algorithm change but haven't found anything. Thanks.

If you rank first organically for a keyword, will you rank first for variations?
Hi everyone, Hoping that someone will be able to answer this question for us. If we rank first organically for a keyword, are we safe to assume that we'll rank first (or close to it) for variations of that keyword as well? E.g. If we rank first easily for "Hamilton Island", can we safely assume that we will rank well organically for close variations of that keyword such as "Hamilton Islands", "Hamiltonisland", "Hamilton Island Hotel" due to the fact that "Hamilton Island" is in those keywords? We're deciding which keywords to monitor in SEOmoz and we don't want to waste keywords on very similar terms if we don't have to. Really appreciate any responses! Cheers.

Ranking #1 for decent traffic keywords, but not receiving any traffic?
A site I work on is ranked number 1 for a few keywords. To see how much a keyword is searched per month I rely on Google Adwords Keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). Using this tool I see that the keyword receives 880 local monthly searches and another keyword they rank #1 for receives 1300 local monthly searches. To me these keywords are not the biggest as far as traffic but they are not small by any means. Now here is the issue. Like mentioned above, the site nmber 1 for multiple keywords. They have been ranked number 1 for these keywords for months. Looking in analytics the other day I notice that on a month to month basis both of these keywords are getting 1, or 2 visits. This past month (October) one of the keywords did not receive ANY visits, and that is being ranked #1 for a 1300 monthly searched keyword. It just doesn’t make sense. I would imagine getting at least 100 or so visits a month from these search terms. Could someone please help me understand this a little bit better?

Google said that low-quality pages on your site may affect rankings on other parts
One of my sites got hit pretty hard during the latest Google update. It lost about 30-40% of its US traffic and the future does not look bright considering that Google plans a worldwide roll-out. Problem is, my site is a six year old heavy linked, popular Wordpress blog. I do not know why the article believes that it is low quality. The only reason I came up with is the statement that low-quality pages on a site may affect other pages (think it was in the Wired article). If that is so, would you recommend blocking and de-indexing of Wordpress tag, archive and category pages from the Google index? Or would you suggest to wait a bit more before doing something that drastically. Or do you have another idea what I could to do? I invite you to take a look at the site www.ghacks.net
