SEO Company claiming our results?
-
This company http://www.synapseinteractive.com/portfolio/kempnrugelawgroup.php is linking to us, with a bs graphic about how they improved our rankings for some keywords. I have no idea who this company is. Does this happen often? Also, I'm tempted to contact them to take it down, but I really don't need some questionable company getting annoyed and then linking 10,000 spam sites to me. Any thoughts on what to do?
I'm tempted to just do nothing, but for I ignore it, I want to make sure there's insidious about this link that would cause me any problems down the road. No, I haven't got any GWT or BWT messages about it.
Thanks,
Ruben

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the insights, and thanks for pointing out the picture portfolio, EGOL. I hadn't noticed that.
Best,

OMG! Go to this page and scroll down to bottom and browse the "Related Portfolio". They are using smiling face photos for three of your staff attorneys. No kidding...

I think you should sue their pants off...
Problem, they are in India.

Another option would be to set-up a redirect based on the referrer and point any traffic from their site to a specific page stating that there is no commercial relationship between the two businesses. Probably not worth the effort. I'd just document it and get on building my own business.

I'm sorry to be the negative-Nancy here, but I sincerely doubt Google will respond to this situation.
If it were me I would just float on and forget about it. The only time I would take action is if a client or potential client was somehow seeing this, which it sounds like they are not. I would definitely take a screenshot of the page and document it (just in case) and probably disavow it with a note in the comments section of the disavow file as to what is happening (as short as possible.)
I'm convinced that if anything Google reads those comments sections 1% of the time somewhere between 30-300 days from their upload.
In other words, don't take too much action until it's actually affecting you. This kind of shady company will die off.
I recently discovered a "web design firm" who was linking to my company saying they built our website. I personally built our website from scratch so this is clearly not true. We've ignored them.
People are weird.

If it was my site I would contact Google and express your worries exactly as you have put it above. I'd also ask Google if you should disavow the link pointing to your site, or if they will automatically not count it anyway.
Looking at the backlink profile of the site (albeit briefly) It's clear that this is probably not a very reputable company, I'd definitely contact Google,
Good luck!

Opinion on Gotch SEO methods & services
I would love to get you all's take on Gotch SEO. I am gearing up to link build for a site in the next several months, and have been reading up from sources other than Moz, in preparation. (Need to re-read Moz's guide, too, but I have already read it last year) I'm reading Gotch SEO's main link building method articles right now, and am wondering what you all think. Do you think they have a good approach and are generally reliable? Likewise, has anyone used their service for getting a link? What was your experience? Or if you haven't used the service, any quick takes on it?

Surely this cannot be a good SEO technique?
I have a client whose competitor has great positions in Google, and a quick look at the meta data revealed this (I removed the company name): I'd love some opinions on this. My gut feel tells me this is spammy. But all my client sees is that this site is on page 1! ~Caro

Reputable SEO companies
I am looking for a reputable SEO company to assist in link building. I have done many searches and find that there are many sites that have a "top 10." However I am finding they are listed there due to paying large amounts of money. Any recommendations on companies that can show real results and are not charging extreme amounts of money while using minimum wage interns to do all the work with crappy results. I had a few people suggest "internet marketing ninjas" if anyone has used, chime in. Thanks

Abused seo unintentionally, now need a way out
Hello, I have been in contact with a smo to optimize my site for search engines and social media sites. my site was doing great from last 4 years. but suddenly it started dropping in ranking. then i came and joined seomoz pro to find a way out. i was suggested to categories content in form of subdomains ... well that put a huge toll on my rankings.. thanks to suggestions here i have 301 them to sub directories. Now another huge question arises. i found out that my smo guy was taking artificial votes or whatever youc all them on twitter, facebook and g+ ...twitter and facebook's are understandable but i am getting to think that these votings on g+ might have affected my site's ranking ? here is a sample url http://www.designzzz.com/cutest-puppy-pictures-pet-photography-tips/ if you scroll below you will see 56 google plus 1s... now the big question is, i have been creating genuince content. but nowt hat i am stuck in this situation, how to get out of it ? changing urls will be bad for readers.. will a 301 will fix it ? or any other method. thanks in advance

SEO dead?
What does everyone think about this article? http://www.forbes.com/sites/kenkrogue/2 … l-content/ I tend to think its off base, Link building still works and there are tons of things that have to do with SEO that have nothing to do with link building... I think its actually quite ridiculous and written by people that actually no nothing about SEO...kind of a lame attempt by Forbes, and if anything at all, this is just forbes practicing "SEO" with a link attraction post like this. Becase SEO, is NOT dead

Is this a white hat SEO tactic?
Hi, I just noticed this website http://www.knobsandhardware.com hosts pages like http://www.knobsandhardware.com/local/hardware/California-Cabinet-Hardware.html that are filled with permutations of products + cities. These pages rank for these long tail phrases. Is this considered white hat?

Contacted by an SEO company..
We have been contacted by a free SEO company, who seem to use your domain and create articles for you on your site, linking to other relevant sites, while other relevant sites link to yours. All they ask is a small link on your homepage. An excerpt of the instructions are: Download the attached files in a folder to be uploaded to your server (public_html) folder Set 777 permission to the folder. This allows our script to work on your site Add the "site wide" link on your homepage, as well as on the inner pages, the same way we do in the article section. Implement the "site wide" link following the instructions on the README.txt file Copy the script on the file or you can provide us with a temporary FTP access to your server and we will do it for you. Please note that if you can upload our folder to your site within 48 hours, you will be eligible to receive 20 bonus links for your SEO campaign. Should we tread carefully?
