H2s & H3s for Category Navigation
-
Hi all. I am wondering how best to format a category navigation menu. Currently I don't think we're using H2s correctly on our website.
Am I right to think that the top level category e.g. Games should be formatted as an H2 and the sub-categories underneath this should be formatted as H3s (to show a hierarchy)?
Is there a limit on how many H2s and H3s you should use? Obviously only one H1 per page.
Thanks in advance
Paul

There are mixed opinions on the use of them by Google. I happen to think it's zero for all of them except H1 and I'm not convinced even of them.. There is a case for H1 tags and keywords in them but I've ranked pages without strong H1 tags too.
It will depend on the design of your site but typically header tags are bold and slightly larger than the standard text on your page. You can check your websites files and change them around if you want to change the sizes. Think about reading a text book. It's nice to have the chapter titles one size, the sections another size and subsections another size. It's for your users. You want to make sure they can easily find what they want on your page. When we code sites, we generally indent too. That's not for Google, it's for us to find things faster. Same concept.

By the way, I didn't realise that using a header tag actually changed the look of the text? I thought it was simply used in the back end to signify hierarchy to Google? So if we use H2-H6 we would be changing the look of the menu items as well?

Thank you for the advice.

Your first thought is correct. You should use them to show hierarchy of content.
Directly from Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide (page 20)
"Heading tags (not to be confused with the HTML tag or HTTP
headers) are used to present structure on the page to users. There are
six sizes of heading tags, beginning with, the most important, and
ending with
, the least important (1).
Since heading tags typically make text contained in them larger than
normal text on the page, this is a visual cue to users that this text
is important and could help them understand something about
the type of content underneath the heading text. Multiple heading
sizes used in order create a hierarchical structure for your content,
making it easier for users to navigate through your document."There isn't a limit to any of the header tags as far as I know. You are correct that most of us suggest that you only use one H1 tag. I generally don't put a limit on a page of the number of H2, etc tags I use. Remember, you are building your pages for your users and not for Google. Use your header tags to help people navigate information on your page.

Text that appears when hovering over navigation tabs
Hi, I have a Wordpress website and want to delete or edit the text that appears when I hover over my navigation tabs. In my case, the text is always the same as the page title, but I don't know where to edit it separately. When I change the title of a page that is in the navigation, the text that appears changes too. So the general setting is that this text is the same as the page title. Does somebody have an idea where to edit this? Thanks!

Product Description Blurb on Category Page
Hey Everyone, Working with a client who currently has category pages that contain its respective product's description (or about 30 words from it) in each of their product blocks on that category page. We are currently playing with the idea of switching it down to just being the product title and image. We think this will be much more aesthetically pleasing, but aren't sure if it will effect our SEO either negatively or positively. A couple of things to note: The category pages have a description (many of them still need work, but they are unique). The product's description inside the product block is duplicate content of the first 30 or so words on the product page. If you have 30 products on the page, you end up with a page that contains about 900 words + the unique description at the top of the page. Will dropping those 900 words hurt our SEO?

HVAC & Air Conditioning - 1 page of 2 ?
Hello all! This has been an on going issue for us trying to rank an air conditioning repair company. The 2 strongest keywords for us are both HVAC Repair and Air Conditioning Repair. The main question is.... Should this be 1 landing page or 2? I think google may recognize HVAC and Air Conditioning as the same thing, because for some crazy reason my air conditioning repair page ranks for the keyword HVAC repair. My HVAC repair page is actually nowhere to be found. I am coming across the same issue with other keywords like HVAC service , and Air Conditioning Service. Or HVAC Maintenance and Air Conditioning maintenance. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Two Word Company Name (Combined to One) & SEO
Hi All, I'm dealing with a company that has a two word name like "GreatCompany". They rank #1 for that but not for "Great Company". The phrase is not super competitive, but obviously they are not writing the company name with two words anywhere on their site. Has anyone had to deal with something like this? Thinking about creative solutions but I'm fairly sure we're going to need to use the name both ways to have an effect here (or use PPC to augment) but I don't really love the idea of doing that... will feel very odd and inconsistent for visitors. Thanks!

Keyword Cannibalization/stuffing on an ecommerce category page
Hi, Whats the best way to tackle e-commerce category pages? If you have, say, a category showing 30 pairs of socks, and each of the sock products in the lists has a 'view more' link, a link from the product name and a link from the thumbnail. Naturally each of those links should be the product name - sprinkled with a slight variation, a preceding 'View more on [product name]' or superseded with the shop name, so you dont end up with complete duplicate link titles, you get the idea. But you suddenly end up with 90 instances of links with title tags containing 'socks', which ultimately lead to keyword stuffing/cannibalization - especially as you then move to another category with, say, sports socks showing 40 products and therefore 120 link titles also with the word 'socks' Thought on a postcard please? Thanks Tom

Why doe SEOmoz include my categories and subcategories when counting on page links?
Hi everyone, I am new to SEOMOZ, but it looks like really good program. I ran a report last week, and SEOMOZ says that out of 10001 pages, I hve a total of 9995 warnings. When I take a look at the breakdown, it says I have too many on page links. I removed the links from the bottom of each page, but my on page links are still over 100. Does this mean that I will have to get rid of categories and sub-categories in the navigation bar? Thanks, Don

Filtered Navigation, Duplicate content issue on an Ecommerce Website
I have navigation that allows for multiple levels of filtering. What is the best way to prevent the search engine from seeing this duplicate content? Is it a big deal nowadays? I've read many articles and I'm not entirely clear on the solution. For example. You have a page that lists 12 products out of 100: companyname.com/productcategory/page1.htm And then you filter these products: companyname.com/productcategory/filters/page1.htm The filtered page may or may not contain items from the original page, but does contain items that are in the unfiltered navigation pages. How do you help the search engine determine where it should crawl and index the page that contains these products? I can't use rel=canonical, because the exact set of products on the filtered page may not be on any other unfiltered pages. What about robots.txt to block all the filtered pages? Will that also stop pagerank from flowing? What about the meta noindex tag on the filitered pages? I have also considered removing filters entirely, but I'm not sure if sacrificing usability is worth it in order to remove duplicate content. I've read a bunch of blogs and articles, seen the whiteboard special on faceted navigation, but I'm still not clear on how to deal with this issue.
