Can hreflang replace canonicalisation ?
-
Hi
Im working with a site that has ALOT of duplicate content and have recommended developer fix via correct use of Canonicalisation i.e the canonical tag.
However a US version (of this UK site) is about to be developed on a subfolder (domain.com/uk/ & domain.com/US/ etc so also looking into adopting the hreflang attribute on these.
Upon reading up about the hreflang attribute i see that it performs a degree of canonicalisation too.
Does that mean that developing the international versions with hreflang means there's no need to apply canonicalistion tags to deal with the dupe content, since will deal with the original dupe content problems as well as the new country related dupe content, via the hreflang ?
I also understand that hreflang and canonicalisation can conflict/clash on different language versions of international subfolders etc as per: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igbrm1z_7Hk
In this instance we are only looking at US/UK versions but very likely will want to expand into non english countries too in the future like France for example.
So given both the above points if you are using hreflang is it advisable (or even best) to totally avoid the canonical tag ?
I would be surprised if the answers yes, since whilst makes logical sense given the above (if the above statements are correct), that seems strange given how important and standard best practice canonical usage seems to be these days.
What best ? Use the Hreflang alone, or the Canonical tag alone or both ?
What does everyone else do in similar situation ?
All Best
Dan

Thanks Tommy
Its just a .com at the moment but language versions will be on subfolders .com/us and .com/uk with hreflang handling the rest of the internationalisation in conjunction with webmaster tools etc
All the dupe content is on the .com
cheers

Im sure ill have some further questions though when going through the process with the developers

Hi Dan,
Which subdomain do you have a lot of duplicate content? If you have duplicate content for the EN-US, then I would use canonical tags for the US content. However, when you create a new sub-domain for UK, I would use hreflang on those contents to avoid causing duplicate content issues with the US contents that are the same.

Hi Dan
The hreflang will tell google that different pages are targeted to different languages/regions, but it will not help solve your existing dupe content problems as you describe them. So for these you should use the canonical tag.
Hreflang and canonical tags can be used together but can cause issues if you are not careful. Main thing to be sure of is that you keep any canonical tags within the same lang/region pages. You do not want to be having a US page with a canonical tag pointing to a UK page in other words.
Having multiple UK pages with a canonical pointing to the main UK page and the main UK page having an hreflang tag to its US counterpart is ok (as is having a self referencing canonical tag on the main UK and US pages if needed). Google mentions here that this is an acceptable way to handle canonicalisation issues in an international setup.
What you would also want to avoid is having hreflang tags on your dupe content pages in the UK version. Where would they go? to the US version of the duplicate content? To the main canonical version of the US content? That could get messy pretty quickly. So the trick is to consolidate your UK pages with rel canonical and then properly markup your final regional variations with hreflang.
Hope that makes sense!

Thanks for commenting Tommy !
The problem is though that the site already has lots & lots of duplicate pages, so want the developers to fix that, and i have been advising they do this via canonical tag since standard practice.
So are you saying that if we use hreflang then no need to use canonical for this existing duplicate content since using hreflang on the new international pages will deal with the old dupe content as well as the new uk/us dupe content too ?
cheers

Hi Dan,
To my understanding on hreflang, since the UK site is only targeting searchers in UK, i don't think you will need the canonical tag and there is no reason to use it. As the canonical tag is to search engines find the original piece of content and avoid duplicate content. However, since the hreflang already tells the search engine that the UK page is targeting UK, it wouldn't appear for people that searches in US so duplicate content wouldn't be an issue.
In the end, if you are targeting different countries with the hreflang, i think that is enough. I would only use canonical if the same content is targeting searchers in the same geo location.

How can I provide titles and descriptive text for our list of USPs on the same page optimized both for usability and SEO
I am rebuilding our website together with an agency and I am stuck with the following problem: We have a page which will provide the visitor with a quick and convincing impression why he should chose our enterprise. On this page we want to show our USPs (Unique Selling Points) each with a title and a short description. Now my preferred way of presenting those USPs would be of a list of the titles (which permits to see all USPs without having to read a lot of text) where each title can be clicked to expand the description (in case you want to know more about this specific USP) and if you click on another title the previously clicked title description will collapse and the new description expand and so on (similar to this page: http://www.berlin-city-immobilien.de/38.html - I'm talking about the list in the middle of the page starting with the headline "Dabei profitieren Sie von folgenden Vorteilen"). Since I also want to use these descriptions as on page SEO-texts I checked whether Google might not index or at least value "click to expand content" less than plain text in the body of the page and I stumbled over this article: https://www.seroundtable.com/google-hidden-tab-content-seo-19489.html. According to this article Google will definitely discount the descriptions on my page. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this problem? Either by suggesting a different way to show titles and descriptions on the page or maybe by suggesting a workaround so Google will not treat the descriptions as "click to expand text". Thank you already in advance for your input.

Can I speed up removal of cache for 301'd page on unverified website?
I recently asked another website to remove a page from their website (I have no control over this website) and they have now 301'd this old URL to another - this is just what I wanted. My only aim now is to see the Google cache removed for that page as quickly as possible.
Technical SEO | | Mark_Reynolds
I'm not sure that asking the website to remove the url via WMT is the right way to go and assume I should just be waiting for Google to pick up the 301 and naturally remove the cache. But are there any recommended methods I can use to speed this process up? The old URL was last cached on 3 Oct 2014 so not too long ago. I don't think the URL is linked from any other page on the Internet now, but I guess it would still be in Google's list of URLs to crawl. Should I sit back and wait (who knows how long that would take?) or would adding a link to the old URL from a website I manage speed things up? Or would it help to submit the old URL to Google's Submission tool? URL0 -

Can Google show the hReview-Aggregate microformat in the SERPs on a product page if the reviews themselves are on a separate page?
Hi, We recently changed our eCommerce site structure a bit and separated our product reviews onto a a different page. There were a couple of reasons we did this : We used pagination on the product page which meant we got duplicate content warnings. We didn't want to show all the reviews on the product page because this was bad for UX (and diluted our keywords). We thought having a single page was better than paginated content, or at least safer for indexing. We found that Googlebot quite often got stuck in loops and we didn't want to bury the reviews way down in the site structure. We wanted to reduce our bounce rate a little, so having a different reviews page could help with this. In the process of doing this we tidied up our microformats a bit too. The product page used to have to three main microformats; hProduct hReview-Aggregate hReview The product page now only has hProduct and hReview-Aggregate (which is now nested inside the hProduct). This means the reviews page has hReview-Aggregate and hReviews for each review itself. We've taken care to make sure that we're specifying that it's a product review and the URL of that product. However, we've noticed over the past few weeks that Google has stopped feeding the reviews into the SERPs for product pages, and is instead only feeding them in for the reviews pages. Is there any way to separate the reviews out and get Google to use the Microformats for both pages? Would using microdata be a better way to implement this? Thanks,

Can I optimize two different pages with very similar keywords without hurting SEO?
Hi there, I have often heard that you cannot have multiple pages rank for the same keyword. My question here is more about long tail keywords who have the same keyword phrase repeated on different pages. For Example: I have two webpages with different content. I want to have one page (Homepage) rank for the more generic term such as "innovation management" and another supporting page rank for "innovation management software". Will Google see these two different webpages as competing? Should I avoid repeating the more general term in the phrase? Has anyone ever seen your SEO results decline when doing this? I don't believe this is duplicate content since the pages hold completely different copy and assets but I am not sure if the repeating phrase in the title tags will flag anything to the search engines.

What can I do if Google Webmaster Tools doesn't recognize the robots.txt file?
I'm working on a recently hacked site for a client and and in trying to identify how exactly the hack is running I need to use the fetch as Google bot feature in GWT. I'd love to use this but it thinks the robots.txt is blocking it's acces but the only thing in the robots.txt file is a link to the sitemap. Unde the Blocked URLs section of the GWT it shows that the robots.txt was last downloaded yesterday but it's incorrect information. Is there a way to force Google to look again?
