Development site is live (and has indexed) alongside live site - what's the best course of action?
-
Hello Mozzers,
I am undertaking a site audit and have just noticed that the developer has left the development site up and it has indexed. They 301d from pages on old site to equivalent pages on new site but seem to have allowed the development site to index, and they haven't switched off the development site. So would the best option be to redirect the development site pages to the homepage of the new site (there is no PR on dev site and there are no links incoming to dev site, so nothing much to lose...)? Or should I request equivalent to equivalent page redirection?
Alternatively I can simply ask for the dev site to be switched off and the URLs removed via WMT, I guess...
Thanks in advance for your help!

Very pleased to have been of assistance
heres links to older threads where i asked similar before, for further verification and credit to those that originally helped me:

Thanks Amelia - yes you're definitely on the right lines - Dan's response below is v helpful too, that's for sure. I do struggle with developers from time to time, so teaching myself coding and so on via codeacademy, etc. - learnt at uni many years ago but v out of date! Will come in useful for SEO too.
-
Many thanks Dan - much appreciated - that process there makes perfect sense even though in my case too :)))) I will report back on progress in a month or so...
-
Yes a great answer there from Dan - and thanks for your useful input - good point re: not relying on robots.txt alone!
-
Thanks Robert and for the extra comments too !
I cant remember which Mozzer helped me with the above in the first place who should be credited but ill track down the original thread and add it to this post since also contains further info and discussion
All Best

Dan,
This is a very good answer. Just to emphasize, probably the most important piece with a "dev" site is the last one Dan mentions: Password protection. Once you clean up the issue, add it then you should not have the issue going forward.
Even with robots.txt on our dev sites and our design studio, we have had pages end up on the SERPS. Because of the DA of our design studio (where clients go to approve a comp, etc.) we recently had a new political client's comp ranking for a search term on page one. (Ahead of their actual site (we were building another to replace it). So, even with robots.txt, there is still no guarantee it will not be crawled.
Adding password protection will assist in that.Lastly, if you have someone building you a site, and they say they do not want to take down the dev version after your launch, tell them you do not wish to pay them. It will go down. That is unreasonable. I cannot think of a reason to keep the dev version live once the client site launches.
Again, good job Dan.

Hi
I'm in a similarish situation with a clients site.
Their situation is that the dev site is on a subdomain i.e. staging.domain.com and they want to keep the staging area active for demonstrating future development work, so situation may be slightly different from yours.
They have now blocked via robot.txt but that's like shutting the stable door after the horse has already bolted.
I asked Moz Q&A a few months ago and got the below answer from a few very helpful and wize Mozzers
-
Setup a completely different Webmaster Tools account unrelated to the main site, so that there
is a new W.T account specific to the staging area sub-domain -
Add a robots.txt on the staging area sub domain site that disallows all pages and all crawlers
OR use the no-index meta tag on all pages but Google much prefers Robots.txt usage for this
Note: Its very important when you update the main site it does not include or push out these files and
instructions too (since that would result in main site being de-indexed)-
Request removal of all pages in GWT. Leave the form field for the page to be removed blank,
since will remove all subdomain pages -
After about 1 month OR you see that the pages are all out of the Search Engine listings (SERPS),
and Google has spidered and seen the robots.txt, then put up a password on the entire staging
site.
Hope that helps
All Best
Dan

Hi Luke,
I'm interested in other responses to this question...
If I was in your position after seriously berating the dev I would make sure you disallow the dev site in your robots.txt and use webmaster tools to remove the URLs from the index. Then I would password protect the dev site so the search engines couldn't get there even if they try.
Like I say, I'm interested in other responses! This is what I would do, but I don't really know if it's definitely the right thing to do. Does anyone else have anything to add?
Best of luck - its crappy when someone else's error cocks up your work: when our site launched for the first time our IT department screwed up on a monumental scale by getting the DNS settings wrong.
Amelia

Beta Site Removal best practices
Hi everyone.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | bgvsiteadmin
We are doing a CMS migration and site redesign with some structural changes. Our temporarily Beta site (one of the staging environments and the only one that is not behind firewall) started appearing in search. Site got indexed before we added robots.txt due to dev error (at that time all pages were index, follow due to nature of beta site, it is a final stage that mirrors live site) As an remedy, we implemented robots.txt for beta version as : User-Agent: *
Disallow: / Removed beta form search for 90 days. Also, changed all pages to no index/no follow . Those blockers will be changed once code for beta get pushed into production. However, We already have all links redirected (301) from old site to new one. this will go in effect once migration starts (we will go live with completely redesigned site that is now in beta, in few days). After that, beta will be deleted completely and become 404 or 410. So the question is, should we delete beta site and simple make 404/410 without any redirects (site as is existed for only few days ). What is best thing to do, we don't want to hurt our SEO equity. Please let me know if you need more clarification. Thank you!0 -
Indexed Pages Different when I perform a "site:Google.com" site search - why?
My client has an ecommerce website with approx. 300,000 URLs (a lot of these are parameters blocked by the spiders thru meta robots tag). There are 9,000 "true" URLs being submitted to Google Search Console, Google says they are indexing 8,000 of them. Here's the weird part - When I do a "site:website" function search in Google, it says Google is indexing 2.2 million pages on the URL, but I am unable to view past page 14 of the SERPs. It just stops showing results and I don't even get a "the next results are duplicate results" message." What is happening? Why does Google say they are indexing 2.2 million URLs, but then won't show me more than 140 pages they are indexing? Thank you so much for your help, I tried looking for the answer and I know this is the best place to ask!

Linking to one of my own sites, from my site
Hi experts, I own a site for castingjobs (Site1) and a site for selling paintings (Site2). In a long time, I've had a link at the bottom of Site1, linking to Site 2. (Basicaly: Partnerlink: Link site 2). Site1 is for me the the only important site, since it's where Im making my monthly revenue. I added the link like 5 years ago or so, to try to boost site 2. My question is:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | KasperGJ
1. Is it somehow bad for SEO for site 1, since the two sites have nothing to do with each other, they are basically just owned by me.
2. Would it make sense to link from Site 2 to Site 1 indstead?0 -
How do I tell if competitor's links are good?
One strategy I have seen recommended over and over is to look at your competitor's back links and see if any could be relevant for your site and worth pursuing. My question is how do I evaluate a link and not end up pursuing some penalized site? I would guess checking for Google index is a good idea since some of the webmasters may not be aware they are penalized. Is it DA and whether they are indexed alone? Many sites I have seen have DA in the teens but are legitimate in our industry. Should they not be considered due to low DA? Also I see links from directories on many competitor sites. Seems a controversial subject, but assuming the directory is industry specific, is it OK? Thanks in advance!

Help my site it's not being indexed
Hello... We have a client, that had arround 17K visits a month... Last september he hired a company to do a redesign of his website....They needed to create a copy of the site on a different subdomain on another root domain... so I told them to block that content in order to not affect my production site, cause it was going to be an exact replica of the content but different design.... The developmet team did it wrong and blocked the production site (using robots.txt), so my site lost all it's organica traffic, which was 85-90% of the total traffic and now only get a couple of hundreds visits a month... First I thought we had been somehow penalized, however when I the other site recieving new traffic and being indexed i realized so I switched the robots.txt and created 301 redirect from the subdomain to the production site. After resending sitemaps, links to google+ and many things I can't get google to reindex my site.... when i do a site:domain.com search in google I only get 3 results. Its been now almost 2 month and honestly dont know what to do.... Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Dan

What NAP format do I use if the USPS can't even find my client's address?
My client has a site already listed on Google+Local under "5208 N 1st St". He has some other NAPs, e.g., YellowPages, under "5208 N First Street". The USPS finds neither of these, nor any variation that I can possibly think of! Which is better? Do I just take the one that Google has accepted and make all the others like it as best I can? And doesn't it matter that the USPS doesn't even recognize the thing? Or no? Local SEO wizards, thanks in advance for your guidance!

Two Pages with the Same Name Different URL's
I was hoping someone could give me some insight into a perplexing issue that I am having with my website. I run an 20K product ecommerce website and I am finding it necessary to have two pages for my content: 1 for content category pages about wigets one for shop pages for wigets 1st page would be .com/shop/wiget/ 2nd page would be .com/content/wiget/ The 1st page would be a catalogue of all the products with filters for the customer to narrow down wigets. So ultimately the URL for the shop page could look like this when the customer filters down... .com/shop/wiget/color/shape/ The second page would be content all about the Wigets. This would be types of wigets colors of wigets, how wigets are used, links to articles about wigets etc. Here are my questions. 1. Is it bad to have two pages about wigets on the site, one for shopping and one for information. The issue here is when I combine my content wiget with my shop wiget page, no one buys anything. But I want to be able to provide Google the best experience for rankings. What is the best approach for Google and the customer? 2. Should I rel canonical all of my .com/shop/wiget/ + .com/wiget/color/ etc. pages to the .com/content/wiget/ page? Or, Should I be canonicalizing all of my .com/shop/wiget/color/etc pages to .com/shop/wiget/ page? 3. Ranking issues. As it is right now, I rank #1 for wiget color. This page on my site would be .com/shop/wiget/color/ . If I rel canonicalize all of my pages to .com/content/wiget/ I am going to loose my rankings because all of my shop/wiget/xxx/xxx/ pages will then point to .com/content/wiget/ page. I am just finding with these massive ecommerce sites that there is WAY to much potential for duplicate content, not enough room to allow Google the ability to rank long tail phrases all the while making it completely complicated to offer people pages that promote buying. As I said before, when I combine my content + shop pages together into one page, my sales hit the floor (like 0 - 15 dollars a day), when i just make a shop page my sales are like (1k+ a day). But I have noticed that ever since Penguin and Panda my rankings have fallen from #1 across the board to #15 and lower for a lot of my phrase with the exception of the one mentioned above. This is why I want to make an information page about wigets and a shop page for people to buy wigets. Please advise if you would. Thanks so much for any insight you can give me!

Recently created site indexed; no backlinks showing?
I launched a website for a client in mid-March. The site is already indexed, I have built quite a few links to it (links are also indexed), and ranks well for some targeted keywords. However, when I try to check backlinks to the site with Open Site Explorer, it comes back with "No Data Available For This URL". Is this something I should be worried about or merely a case of 'recency' of page creation'? I know it says that it can take 45-60 days for a site to be included in Linkscape but I'm approaching the 60 days mark and still nothing.
