Is there a Joomla! Component For A Blog Page That Is Recommended?
-
A business partner currently has a page on a Joomla! website that is passing for the blog page. I am not a Joomla! guy so I dont' know much about it. I do know that I don't like a lot of things and prefer Drupal however making a change to Drupal on that site is not an option. We need to upgrade the blog page so that it is more like a blog and I know there has to be an SEO friendly component for a Joomla! blog page.
Any ideas?

Glad it's working for you now, Jimmy! So sorry you had to deal with this. Thanks for hanging in there, and for the thumbs up
-
It is working now. I gave him a thumbs up and you one also! It wouldn't let me give anyone a thumbs up that day. Frustrating... All good though...
-
Hi Jimmy, is this working for you now? If not, are you able to give other community members the "thumbs up"?
-
Thanks for the update, Jimmy. Good deal.

Christy
I have clicked the "thumbs up" on Paul's response and it goes up by one and then it disappears. ????

Hey Christy,
Thanks for the followup. Yes Paul did pretty much answer it. Although I asked another specific question and then I will mark as "Good Answer".
Thanks

Hey Paul,
Thank you very much for the info. I will be marking as good answer. I gave you a thumbs up. I primarily use Drupal and have a blog format that I find ideal. I like it because it has the blog title and custom excerpts. I just have a question related to your answer. In your answer you stated:
"While it doesn't appear that the theme you're using is especially focused on it's blog design, it does appear there are a number of customisations available within it that you're not using. "
Could you elaborate or be more specific about some of these? I am very curious. Especially ones that would aid with regards to SEO, Social Media, and/or blogs/articles.
Again thank you for your time and response.

Hi Jimmy, Paul left a great response. Did it answer your question? If so, please mark it as a "good answer". Either way, we'd love an update on your situation. Thanks!
Christy

Joomla is template and theme-driven just like any CMS, Jimmy. So the current blog is being controlled by the theme that you currently have installed (called Callie Rush). If you want to change the way some parts of it look and work, you have three options, in order of complexity/effort:
- use the customisation settings that are built into your current theme to customise the blog templates
- switch to a different theme that offers a blog that looks and works the way you want it to and also works for the other types of pages of your site
- pay a developer to customise the blog-related templates and design (CSS/Plugins/Custom code) of the existing theme to look and work the way you want them to.
These are the same options you have in pretty much any CMS - Joomla, Drupal or WordPress, for example.
While it doesn't appear that the theme you're using is especially focused on it's blog design, it does appear there are a number of customisations available within it that you're not using. Aside from that, as I say, you have the two other options for changing how the blog templates work and function.
So bottom line answer to your question... to change the way the blog work, see if there are customisation settings within your existing theme that suit your needs. Otherwise, for a "drop-in" solution, you'll need to find a new theme that suits you better - but will also affect the design and functionality of your whole site, not just the blog pages.
Does that all make sense?
Paul
P.S. For this kind of Joomla-specific question, you'd likely get much more and better help on a Joomla-specific forum than an SEO/Web Marketing forum like MOZ.

How to fix non-crawlable pages affected by CSS modals?
I stumbled across something new when doing a site audit in SEMRUSH today ---> Modals. The case: Several pages could not be crawled because of (modal:) in the URL. What I know: "A modal is a dialog box/popup window that is displayed on top of the current page" based on CSS and JS. What I don't know: How to prevent crawlers from finding them.

Certain PHP Pages Not Showing In SERPs
Hi all, You've all been so helpful so far, I'm hoping you can help me with our trickiest SEO question yet. Last year we migrated 7 sites into one, going from flat html to Joomla. This went fine and although we saw a slight drop in traffic, it wasn't too bad. Now however traffic has started to drop and we've been able to hone it down into a certain area of our website. Each of the 7 sites had their own page with some php code that was fed products. These products were updated everyday and were are second most popular page on the sites aprt from the home page. These pages were found in Google no problem and were an essential resource for our site. What we have found is these pages cannot be found at all, unless you type the full business name and product. If you just type the product and the location our customer is based in, we're no where, using the Moz tools it says we're not in the top 50 results. This is a bit of a shock since we used to be at least on the first page, usually quite high up. I'm a little stumped as SEO wise these pages are technically better. They offer the same functionality but in a much more SEO friendly way. I've asked our developer to check: Nothing is being blocked in robots.txt

The pages are being indexed
There's no strange code errors Essentially the pages can't be found even if we type the full title, for example 'customer's products in their town' to be found we have to type 'customer's products in their town and their full business name'. The top third of the page is just html text, the bottom like I mentioned is PHP and is fed data from a database which is refreshed each morning. I know our developer did some rel conical work but has assured me that's all working fine. While I know it's a new website, we've owned the domain for a while so our domain authority isn't brand new and 0, we also have pages with worse page authority that show up on page 1 no problem, so I'm leaning towards something else might not be right. Can anyone help me figure out why these pages are being indexed but not even found? Thanks!0 -
How to make sure category pages rank higher than product pages?
Hi, This question is E-Commerce related. We have product categories dividing products by color. Let's say we have the category 'blue toy cars' and a product called 'blue toy car racer', both of these could rank for the keyword 'blue toy car'. How do we make sure the category 'blue toy cars' ranks above the product 'blue toy car racer'? Or is the category page automatically ranked higher because of the higher page authority of that page? SEO tricks for a one page site with commented html content
Hi, I am building a website that is very similar to madebysofa.com : means it is one page site with entire content loaded (however are commented in html) and by clicking on sections it modify the DOM to make specific section visible. It is very interesting from UX point of view but as far as I know, since this way most of my content is always commented and hidden from crawlers, I will loose points regarding SEO. Is there any workaround you can recommend or you think sites like madebysofa.com are doomed to loose SEO points by nature? Best regards,

Can anyone recommend a firm for cross-browser testing?
I'd like to outsource the cross-browser testing and get complete functionality testing across browsers too. I work for an online travel tour operator, so we take a lot of reservations online. I don't totally trust my internal resources using tools like Selenium because we're adding a lot of new functionality to our new site - saved itineraries, wish list, some upselling and cross selling functionality, selling insurance, etc. So, while of course I want to be sure everything renders properly across browsers, I also feel like the investment in having someone check booking process in all browsers/technologies is critical especially since many of our customers are accessing our sites using older browsers. Thoughts??

Flag page elements to not be loaded by Instapaper and co.
Does anybody know if there is a way to mark certain elements (especially navigation menus) so that instapaper and co don't pull them? I'm looking for a quick solution (best would be if it was CSS based) nothing fancy like parsing the user-agent. That would be plan B. I've added role="navigation" id="navigation" and class="navigation" to the nav elements in hope that it would work. Seems like it does not; sometimes the elements are present in the page generated by instapaper, sometimes not. Thank you for any replies and have a great day! Jan

How to Add canonical tags on .ASPX pages?
What is the proper way (or is it possible) to add canonical tags on website pages that end in .aspx? If you add a canonical tag to the Master Page it will put that exact canonical tag on every page, which is bad. Is there a different version of the tag to put on individual pages? And one to put on the home page without the Master Page error?
