Internal keyword linking - short or long string
-
I've seen a couple of people leave comments about keyword linking being too specific.
If I"m doing a lot of internal keyword linking and I want to rank well for 'widgets', is it better that most of the links just use the word 'widgets' or should some of the links have more words in them.
ie: 'red and blue widgets' - 'buy these widgets online' etc.

There's no direct evidence that over-doing your internal commercial linking (i.e. linking with your primary keyword internally in a site) causes problems, but it certainly doesn't look professional to continually link to your car insurance page with the anchor text "car insurance". There has been some speculation that internal linking like this can cause issues, but I haven't seen it tested or proven yet in the way that having too many inbound links like this has been tested / confirmed.
I would certainly not overdo this sort of linking despite there being no solid evidence that I am aware of, partially because of the unprofessional vibe it gives a page (related to everything David has mentioned above) and partially because I am sure it sends sub-optimal signals to Google regardless of whether it is considered a ranking factor.

I dont think having a whole site full of exact match links will benefit anyone. Users, your site, or your rankings. Here is why:
A user is browsing your site. they come to the word "widgets" in a sentence that is linked. They keep reading. They come to the word "widgets" in a sentence that is linked. They keep reading. They come to the word "widgets" in a sentence that is linked. They keep reading. They come to the word "widgets" in a sentence that is linked. They keep reading. They come to the word "widgets" in a sentence that is linked. They keep reading. They come to the word "widgets" in a sentence that is linked. They leave, because the site doesn't offer them anything in terms of excitement, information, or value.
In reality, you would be lucky to have a user read that long. As you read that above, it becomes apparent how proper anchor text can benefit your users. Lets look at another example:
A user is browsing your site. They come to the word "widgets" in a sentence that is linked. They keep reading. The next sentence speaks about the benefits of using said widget, and links using the text "how widget works". They keep reading. The next sentence compares your widget to another, similar widget offered by a competitor, using a infographic. The infographic has a buttom that says "view the full comparison". They start clicking, and reading your subpages. They find useful info, that answers the question of why they came there in the first place. Better yet, because your site rocks, they share it with a friend.
I could go on, but I think you get the idea. I know you want to rank for your keyword, but don't focus strickly on that. Here is an article I found useful, (ironically its from the MOZ blog) but it gives a different perspective on site design and optimizing around a users experience. http://moz.com/blog/most-entertaining-guide-to-landing-page-optimization
On top of all that, I'm betting Google wants to see your links used in the proper way, meaning creatively. You can include your widget keyword in your links, but don't use it the same way every time.

I would vary them when possible. Most can be for the exact keyword but I think some variation is better as well, maybe even a few "here" links, actual links put as anchor text, etc.

Simple question: I wonder if I'm over internally linking?
Hi, What's you guys' policy on how much to internally link. I do it a lot - whenever it makes sense, but hold off if I just linked to the same page in the last paragraph, for instance. Would like to know your thoughts to see if I'm overdoing it. This is for Ecommerce blog posts, category descriptions, and product descriptions if that matters. Thanks.

Keyword Stuffing unintentionally
I have a situation and would love some options. We have a site where we sell a product and lets cal it dog collars. The home page will not rank for its main term. Renetly the site was redesigned and the Url structure was re-optimized so that it was not so complex. However, we have 500 products and a dozen categories which all include dog collars as keyword. The products are all dog collar singular or collars plural in the url. So lets say ".com/red-dog-collar" and ".com/blue-dog-collar" then ".com/large-dog-collar" and the categoreies like "classic-dog-collars" and etc. So its very hard to not put the word dog collar into every single product because thats what it is. Whats hapening is that the menu is linking to each of these categories and the home page is linking to a dozen or more products which all include the word dog collar or dog collars in the URL. The actual text/content is a good ration. But the source code as stated above shows the main term 150 times. Not exact, but phrase match for those adwords gurus out there. Thus the page does not rank for its terms and instead google is choosing another internal pages which is relevant. Atleast i think thats why the page does not rank for its term, which it once ranked very high against some major competitors. How on earth do i fix this without removing products and tags and all these links from the home page? Or should i not worry about this and find another reason why this page is not ranking for the term it should be ranking for. The backlink profile is not over optmized by the way. Either is internal anchor text links. Thank you

Site Wide Links
Howdy Moz! So our agency has been around for long enough to have a few sites we've built that have our credit in their footer resulting in a site wide link. Mostly just our name. We've heard that Google does not particularly like site wide links, should we go through and remove some of these old links?

Keywords to optimize
In the menu there's an item with a submenu with 4 items (pages) and another item with a submenu with almost the same pages with a litle bit different content. The problem is that one keyword can be applied and must be applied to the similar pages (the topic is very similar). I guess the number of keywords that we optimize is also important too. Optimizing minimun 8 keywords seems to me very hard. I' was told to optimize for a very low number of keywords but then we have the problem of redundancy. What should I do? Thanks!

Several Links in Some Pages
Dear all, Our main site is a bussiness directory, and following some SEO advices, we are creating landing pages for each category, in order to optimize them for the keywords. Those landing pages have links to the listings related to them. Using the same idea, we have created pages related to the regions, and those pages include links to the listings located in them. The only problem that I see with that, is the number of links that some categories or regions could have. Is there a limit of recomended number of links per page, from a SEO perspective? We also have a main category page, that includes a list of all categories, and this page could also have a relatively high number of links. The pages have around 300 to 500 words, some include also images, some include videos. Many thanks for your help, Daniel

Product links on homepage
Hi, I;m wondering if it really does aid SEO or even hinder it now to have lists of top selling products as links on the base of each page. This was recommended to us sometime ago by a consultant so we did it but is it outdated? I'm concerned it may penalise our pages now by creating too many links? opinions appreciated. wwww.gourmetdirect.com and scroll down to see what I mean

Internal Linking
Hi Everyone, Should i be careful of how many internal links I have on one page? For example if i have a page that contains 700 words, can i have 5, 10, 15 internal links linking to other pages on my website? Is there a ratio for best practice. I know that internal linking is important for spiders to crawl your website but at the same time dont make it look spammy. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for any help.
