How on Earth are These Sites Outranking Us?
-
Hello all,
My colleague and I have been doing a lot of work to optimise our companies site (www.allseasonshire.eu/). The project is still massively work in progress. While we've been analysing the SERPs for KW's we're trying to rank for we've noticed two sites that are outranking us and we can't work out why.
The sites in question are www(dot)nationwide-boilerhire(dot)co(dot)uk & and www(dot)nationwideboilerhire(dot)com. They're both very small sites, with hardly any content and basically zero external links pointing to them. When we compare the root domains in OSE our site comes out on top on every single competitive metric as well, most of them by a long shot.
I'm just wondering if anyone can help shed some light on why these two sites would be appearing so high in SERPs and why they would be outranking us? Any input anyone has is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan
Edit: Keyword in question is 'boiler hire'. Thanks for your answer Nishadha, would that alone really be enough though?

Hi irvingw,
Could you give me some pointers on how we could better optimise http://www.allseasonshire.eu/boilers/ for the term boiler hire?
Thanks in advance,
Ryan

The page is not well optimized for "boiler hire" is mostly what is comes down to.

Hi David,
Awesome response, cheers.
The .co.uk domain is 4 years old and the .com domain is 1 year old according to a who.is lookup.
Couldn't agree more about the backlinks. I've only been with the company for about 4 months and when I joined the backlink profile was in an atrocious state thanks to them participating in a lot of link schemes. Due to them having been burnt before the MD has been reluctant to earn any more links. I've managed to bring him round to attempting white hat methods so will be pursuing that going forward.
Thanks for the info about the URLs, we are aware of the issue and are currently in the process of trying to improve it.
Interesting point about conversion based meta descriptions too, had never thought about using them that way.
Our site used to create a page per location but that got us reamed by Google pretty quickly. Having a 'locations served' list somewhere could maybe be an idea though.
Thanks again David,
Ryan

Hi Ronald,
Thanks for your reply. The page we're trying to rank for boiler hire is actually http://www.allseasonshire.eu/boilers/.
- there is no boiler hire in the URL - **we are aware of this and are looking into a way to re-write some of our URLs, particularly our product ones as they are painfully non-descript **
- The H1 should be "boiler hire". - the h1 is 'Temporary and Emergency Boiler Hire & Rental'
- The page does not have enough content (minimum 300 words at least) - The word count for this page sits around 1000
- Keyword combination "boiler hire" is not found (enough) in the content - The keyword 'boiler hire' is found 11 times in the text. Do people feel this could be too many?
- Keyword combination "boiler hire" is not found in the 1st part of the content - **it's found 3 times within the first paragraph **
- You have no external links on this page - Moz says we have 7 linking root domains and 1, 973 total links (we have also had trouble with a very poor link profile and I am still in the process of cleaning it up, a lot of those links are site wide footers from partner sites) Could this be the cause?
- Its not a top link in your navigation - **it is a top link in our navigation (you can access it by clicking 'Boilers' in the navigation bar) **
With all this in mind are there any other recommendations you would make based on the page we are trying to rank?
Thanks,
Ryan

As much as most people hate to admit it, exact match domains can get a ton of favor in Google's ever evolving quest to provide "relevant" results.
How long has the other domain been around? If it's an oldie (6+ years) along with being a EMD your are going to need some killer backlinks to validate your site enough to bump them off. Also, there whole site is based upon just that one keyword, whereas your site is based upon many different keywords. They are focused on just one keyword, that can constantly be repeated on page because it's their name. Not only that, but I'm sure every citation profile link is also titled something like "Boiler Hire" since again, that is their name. So they have possibly hundreds of links that specify they provide boiler hire, where your site most likely has your name. Do they rank for any of they other keywords your are competing for? Or just boiler hire?
The way that we approch these situations is to get creative in reaching more people, and think of ways that you can get backlinks from high ranking sources. Is there any big publications or resources you can get links from?
I was looking at your URL's, and many of them don't specify the exact keyword you want to go for. Might be picking at straws here, but it's just an idea.
http://www.allseasonshire.eu/lease-or-buy.php
- does not list the word boiler once in the content, page title, or url. This is under the boilder dropdown menu...
- H1 and H3 together
http://www.allseasonshire.eu/boilers/boilers.php
- could modify url to include "hire" rather than repeating keyword twice
- H1 has an H2 right under it, with no content between them
- Description is not based around a conversion "Boiler Hire & Emergency Rental | Electric, Containerised & Mobile Boilers | 22 kw – 1.2 MW | Bespoke builds | All Seasons Hire | 0800 082 8001"
Site design looks great. Just wanted to throw that in there I think with some minor on-page tweaks to increase the density without being spammy, and a killer backlink strategy you will be good to go
Not that I usually recommend doing this, but they also have the areas listed on the page. Could be that Google is putting two and two together, and targeting the site to those areas?

I expect the page you optimzed for boiler hire is http://www.allseasonshire.eu/boilers/boilers.php
- there is no boiler hire in the URL
- The H1 should be "boiler hire".
- The page does not have enough content (minimum 300 words at least)
- Keyword combination "boiler hire" is not found (enough) in the content
- Keyword combination "boiler hire" is not found in the 1st part of the content
- You have no external links on this page
- Its not a top link in your navigation
- etc.
Sorry to say but the site just does not looks optimized to me.
I would advice to take some time and read this: https://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/ and than create a great page!
Good luck!

Hi Ruben,
Thanks for your reply. I hadn't even thought about whether the .eu domain could be having an effect so it's good to get a different view point.
I just did an incognito search in Google FR, Google DE and Google ES for the term 'boiler hire' and they rank 4th (for the .com domain) and 6th (for the .co.uk domain) across the board. We actually fair worse in all of the above search engines than we do on Google UK.
In answer to your question though I can't think of any instances where I've seen a .eu domain outrank a .co.uk domain in the UK. Has anyone else ever encountered this?
Thanks,
Ryan

I ran your sites through OSE, and your site is better on every metric. Though "boiler hire" is in the domain, it shouldn't be enough considering how much better your site is that there's. I do have one theory, though it's just a guess. Are they outranking you in all European countries or just the UK? I'm wondering if the fact your site is an "eu" domain and there site is a "uk" domain has anything to do with it.
In your other searches (just any old search) to you have see an "eu" domain in the top position over a "uk" domain (in the UK)?
Best,
Ruben

Hi Nishadha,
Thanks for your response. The keyword is boiler hire. Do you really think alone would be enough?
-
It's hard to say without knowing what is the keyword you're trying to rank for. But if its "Nationwide Boiler Hire" they do have it in their title.

Comparing 3 sites and their ranks
I am looking at 3 sites and what they have going for them and why they are ranking how they are. I would like to get some of your feedback on why certain sites are above other ones. One of these sites is a client of mine, I will not point out which one. The other 2 are just competitors. http://www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html http://www.samscornholebags.com/ http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php I have compared them in OSE and they have PA of 39, 29, and 58 respectively. AJJ has a ton of links, many of which are spammy and irrelevant. It looks like a link package was bought at some point. The other two have a similar number of links but www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html has more anchor text themed links. None of which seem to be overly optimized. http://www.samscornholebags.com/ seems to have a lot of company branded anchor text links compared to keyword links. http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php as I said obviously bought links and has a ton of stuffed keyword links on poor sites http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php has minimal social shares http://www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html has about 30 shares http://www.samscornholebags.com/ has about 30 shares but a good number of likes and some other social signals. All 3 sites have an A grade using the on page grade tool here on this site. All 3 got dinged for keyword stuffing. http://www.samscornholebags.com/ ranks the highest with the least amount of links and PA http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php ranks next with a really poor link profile and the least amount of social activity http://www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html ranks the lowest with anchor text links that are not spammed and some social activity So with all of this in mind, would anybody care to weigh in on why they think any of these sites are ranking where they are in comparison to one another.

Confused about sites ranking when compared to each other
I'm looking at the keyword "snow guards" for two competitor websites: snogem dot com (SG) snoshield dot com (SS) I've been watching these two for about 4 months. SG stays in the top 5 SERPs consistently, while SS bounces around from 15-20 on Google. I've looked at the competitive link comparison and SS appears to have a much better link profile when it comes to DA. Page specific metrics in OSE show SS with a higher mozrank, moztrust, internal followed links, linking root domains, total linking root domains, and linking C Blocks. It appears to me that SG has many more links, but their links seem to be many site wide exact match keyword links, and paid for advertisements on a major site in the metal roofing industry. Honestly the linking profile of SG surprises me that they rank so much higher than SS after the Panda/Penguin updates. I have two questions: 1. When competing against these sites, should I model SG's link profile? I'm nervous to because of my previous statement thinking they will get hit with Panda/Penguin like updates. 2. What would it take to bounce SS to competing with SG on the first page? Is the number of links the only thing this site is missing, or is there something else to focus on.

I must be tripping. How is this site ranking for the term "SEO Company"??????
When I go to Google non-custom search results and search the term: seo company The website "greencowseo.com" is ranked 3rd. OpenSiteSearch shows nothing. And get this... the domain was registered 14 days ago by somebody in Egypt. Do I need to quit my SEO Moz membership and hire this guy? 🙂

Why does my site get sandboxed but this one doesn't?
I'm currently working on an entire website redesign and restructuring. My current website is extremely spammy. I really worked on it before I knew much about SEO. Now that I have a better foundation I have been remaking my site to get rid of duplicate content and to have a much better UX. With this said, I still depend on the current site to bring in my income while I'm working on getting my new site up. Google seems to constantly kick me out for about a month at a time and then let me back in. The few other times I thought it was because the new site I have been working on is on a different domain and was exactly the same for a while (I don't want google to find this new domain it's just for testing purposes). So I removed the new domain from google and in a couple weeks my main site was back in. Problem is yesterday google hit me again. I'm out of google for all my search terms. Before I was ranking on the first page for just about every "keyword + city" phrase I was trying to rank for. I can find plenty of reasons why google would give me problems with my current site. For example I have TONS of duplicate pages with just the keyword/city changed. Pretty spammy. I did buy about 5 links a year ago or so but they are pretty nothing sites. My question is if google's going to ban me why don't they just do it? They keep taking me out and putting me back in. No messages in webmaster tools. My domain is below: http://yourmusiclessons.com Also when I just started out I got the idea of "keyword + city" from a competitor that ranks for EVERYTHING which is also found below: http://www.musikalessons.com All of the links I bought were the same links the above site bought. I tried buying a link from classical.net which has a high page rank and links to musikalessons.com on each page of their site. As soon as google found the links, I was kicked out. I had them remove it. My question is musika has basically the same "spammyness" as me just on a much larger scale and yet they never seem to be kicked out of google and still rank high. I've thought about reporting musika, but I'm afraid Google will ban me as well because my site is just as bad. Again I'm working all day on fixing my site and doing a 180, it's just taking a long time and I can't launch quite yet. I live off the income from my current site though, so it's very disheartening when this happens. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Search shows site links, but not hyperlinked?
2 of our competitors on Google have site links show in their results which brings you to that specific page. In our listing we show up with the same results a few spots behind them with our site links visible showing very similar content, but are not actually hyper linked. Is there a way to fix the issue and let people actually be able to click on our site links instead of just reading them?

Image only site on top of Google
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to rank in Google for 'Hid xenon' in the netherlands, but there is one site above all results: http://bit.ly/qlsjne As you can see the site almost has no backlinks, and has not a single word in it's content, all images. it's a keyword only domain, and that's probably the only reason why it's ranking that high, but that means then that i can never get higher then him in Google because of it's domainname? Even when it's such a shitty site? Thank you, regards yannick
