Customer Reviews & Message Boards
-
Hi there,
Is there any value to responding to negative reviews that are older than this year? I have some that span from 2009 until now, as well as negative message board posts.
Another question, to mitigate this, should I have the client respond to just reviews or actually get on the message boards as well and address some issues that have been brought up with the company? Some are specific customer complains, some are just talking about the company in general.
Thanks!

IMO.. Regardless of the age of the reviews, when you respond in a professional, understanding & helpful manner, this will help new visitors/potential customers to see that you care, and take the time to engage in the reviews left about your business. Good or bad, reviews are helpful to both potential customers as well as the business itself. As the business owner, this helps us understand how we can improve our service/product/customer support.
I would go in and leave a reply to all reviews, Good & Bad and regardless of the age. It will only help the users.
Good luck SEOSnyder!!

Agree completely with the above.
Every situation is different and your mileage may vary.
That said, as a general rule and in most circumstances:
It is probably best to let sleeping dogs lie re: old reviews. Much better to focus your attention on new, positive reviews...and general link-building.
There are some common sense exemptions, of course. If there is a persistent pattern in the negative reviews..it is best to address the root cause head on -- to show you have improved.
As I have written elsewhere, short and snappy " zinger" responses that avoid tit-for-tat re-hash are best.
Examples from my own practice:
In response to a 1,000 word complaint re: recurring credit card charges: "We issued a full refund as soon as we were notified of theproblem." In response to a complaint about a trade school:
**"The author of this review is a former employee, and not a student. We're sorry things didn't work out for her, but wish her well. " ** -
Hi SEOSynder!
Good question! Yes, I do think there would be value in having the client respond to any negative press you find, whether on message boards or otherwise, provided he can do so effectively. I see some challenges here, however.
A problem with responding to old negative reviews is that you are unlikely to remember the specific circumstances surrounding a customer's complaint. For example, if you own a hotel and someone you can identify leaves a negative review about their stay that happened last week, you can remember what happened and be really specific about the circumstances and what you did to address them. If the stay happened 5 years ago, who knows what happened? So, if you did respond to those old ones, your replies would have to be kind of generic, so the persuasiveness of your responses will likely be less.
I think it will be important to discuss with the client what the goal is here. If it is to
A) Assess complaints to see if there are frequent ones that have occurred in order to discover if internal fixes have been implemented to remedy a negative situation (improving customer service and then having something to write about, explaining what the client did to fix the problem)
B) To create a good impression of the business' responsiveness to complaints by responding with empathy and a will to improve
...then I think it could be worth the time to respond.
*But, do be sure the client is doing this on his own. Don't post replies to negative feedback on the behalf of the client. You can help him craft caring replies, but let him post them on his own, under his own account.
My only other proviso here would be to weigh whether responding to negative threads on message boards might have the effect of making them appear more recent and relevant than leaving them alone. Something to consider
Hope these thoughts are helpful!

I'm wondering if reviews services like yotpo and reviews.io are worth it.
The reviews services advertise that your reviews and stars will be placed in your Google search results and this helps with rankings. Does anyone have experience using Yotpo or Reviews.io with a brick and mortar business? Or, any business for that matter? Thanks,

User ganarated reviews and SEO
Have ideas on how to present hundreds of user ganarated reviews on website in a Google friendly way? "Load more" / calling APIs / or pagination seems to have disadvantages for ranking for this content. Any suggestions, inspiration, tools and articles appreciated.

3rd Party Approved Reviews - Widget or API Feed - Any thoughts ?
Hi Mozzers, We use a google approved 3rd party review company to collect reviews for our branches and now also for our products( this is about to be implemented). We currently use one of their widgets on our site (its javascript) to show the reviews. I don't think google can read this and I don't think we currently, therefore, get any direct seo benefit from it. My questions are as follows : I obviously want to get any SEO benefit from any review text which customers leave but as the data itself is housed on the review site with a widget on my site pointing to it,should I use an API feed as opposed to a widget. If google can read the review text on my page - then surely i should some benefit from it even though, it could technically be classed as duplicate content what are peoples thoughts ? . thanks Pete

Snap Pack & Yelp/Angie's list Page authority
Hey gang, First off thank you for any advice. I know we are all busy trying to make our money so I really appreciate everyone who chimes in. Links to studies and articles are also much appreciated. So. I am by no mean an SEO expert, I prefer to dabble in outreach and authentic link building campaigns. So you can imagine my frustration when I pull off a successful campaign, get about 4 or 5 great real links, raise in organic, but don't budge on the maps. I have noticed something. 1. My competition's yelp page has a couple more reviews than me (btw it's a locksmith site, I know it's a rather spammy industry, I don't do black hat...) BUT their yelp Page Authority is like 46! Same thing with their angies list, BBB, etc etc. MINE IS 1 across the board. Now I know the internet is changing. There is usually no reason for a locksmith site to have a viral blog. Google is looking toward more Citation based authority for local ranking factors. (Or at least that's what they say, I feel like their algorithm is not yet advanced enough to catch all the spammers.) So I am going to have an ethics meeting with my company and make sure we are alwyas treating our customers fabulously as well as sometimes intentionally asking for a review, not just on google, but across all of our web 2.0 platforms. BUT How do I get MY page authority on these directories higher? By back linking to them? DO you guys think these companies actually had campaigns to get links to these directories? Did they just PBN em'? Am I stuck in 2013!? Much love guys.

Review page set up
Hey Gang! So I have a client with multiple locations in different metros. I would like to set up a page in WordPress for each metro that the technician can give to the happy client so they can review us. I would like to have a link to my GMB, Yelp, Yellowpages, and whatever else I can grab. Is there a badass plugin for this or what would you guys do? Much love.

Want to use Google Business Pages but Spam Reviews are putting me off
Not sure if I am missing something here...I have phoned and asked Google business how they deal with reviews which are potentially fake and damaging to a business reputation, it seems there is very little a small local business can do about them other than report the review with no guarantee of anyone helping ...Has anyone else had this issue as I would really like to use this service to assist with rankings on google? It is hard to convince (and to be honest I don't want to have to convince!) a local business that this is a good service at the same time as informing them they will more than likely have to spend extra time fending off fake reviews...Not seen any good answers anywhere else, ignoring the reviews, adding more positive reviews or replying/managing reviews are not an option. Hope someone can help with this, thanks

Local Reviews.
Hi I was wondering if someone can tell me if I understand this correctly or at least my observation has been right? Does Yelp pick up the reviews left of Google and post it on yelp, if you are using the same gmail to log in to both your yelp and google account?

Blocking Reviews by Blocking Words?
A client sent me an email this week, stating that you could block bad reviews on social media sites by "blocking" certain words from comments such as "I", "you", "them", "they"......she heard it at a conference from some other CEO's that had some problems with bad reviews. Essentially these CEO's blocked these words making the pages read only pages so no one could leave a review on social media sites. Now, I have never heard this tactic, nor think this is a good idea in any way shape or form. And I know that you can't block bad reviews from happening (without looking at the bigger picture and encouraging some look at internal processes and customer service). Has any one heard of this tactic? Or better, know of anywhere online that documents this idea of blocking words? I have to get back to her, but I have beaten the drum about how to acquire good reviews so much, I feel I am not getting through! Help! Thanks
