Started linkbuilding, traffic drops
-
So I have a couple 3 year old projects I left intact for the last 2 years. Lately I tried to revigorate them. I started to build links to pages that used to be in Google top ten, but the more links I build, the more I lose out on traffic.
The main keywords stay around the same position, I suppose the loss in appearances and traffic that can be seen in webmaster tools is mainly due to long tails I do not check the rankings for.
I want to ask you guys if anybody have experienced similar data?
I suppose it might be due to the exact anchor tags that I have used 3 years ago, so I already started removing those to see if it has a positive effect. I wanted to ask you, maybe somebody has experienced the same and already knows the reason and a solution for this phenomenon?

Thanks for that Bryan

You hit the nail on the head Andy! If I was part of the Moz Team, I'd endorse that!

Thanks.
I already have switched from using KWsin my anchors, I am just waiting to see results. I have not done much SEO in last 2 years, so my old habits get stuck with me, I am trying to leave them behind.
Thanks, for you response, I am definately more sure how to do it now.

That sounds to be your problem right there. This isn't a viable linking solution any more and will do you more harm than good.
In order for links to succeed now, you need to be thinking linkable assets (what does your site have that people want to link to) and outreach (contacting site owners to inform them of this).
When looking at links back into the site, you don't want to be using keyword rich anchor text either. This will draw unwanted attention from Google, so always use neutral anchors such as the domain, brand or something as simple as a 'click here'.
I would stop doing what you are right now though and focus on quality over quantity.

I am mainily targettng article directories PR 2+, domain 3-4+ years old. I write 1500-2000 character unique articles, with a variation of my target phrase being the title of the article, and therefore the title of the page where it becomes published. I place 1-3 links back to my own site with different anchor texts, that are never exact match for my keyword.
Any idea?
By the way: do you use title tags when you link back to your own page?

Without seeing the sort of links you are building, it is very difficult to know exactly what is being done and how good the links are.
What sort of sites are you approaching for links? How are the potential link partners being acquired? It sounds to me like the links you are building are not favourable, but as I said, impossible without seeing examples or until I understand what types of sites these are.

I just took over a site with 100k visits per month, where do I start?
A friend has been running a blog about mold (moldblogger.com), of all things, and I'm trying to get it up to spec. There are hundreds of articles of dubious quality, potentially thousands of links to who knows where (comments haven't been monitored closely). Traffic is mostly Google organic, with less than 15% of visitors returning. Bounce rate is 80%+. As this is an ad supported website, the goal is to increase page views (more ad views). He has noticed that the more articles they post per month, the more overall views. Even though the new articles barely get traffic, it seems Google likes to see "new" content on the site, and bumps up the results for the top pages when there is a lot of activity. Given a limited budget, where do I start? What's going to be the best return on time invested?

What is the Best Way to Select a Company for Linkbuilding?
We need a few more links, who doesn't, and I've been looking at outsourcing it. Having checked out Moz posts to get an idea of best practice it seems that most link builders that responded to my Elance advert would give me links that would get me penalised either now or in the next update or two by Google. Leaving aside the frequent mentions of link wheels on potential SEOs sites, the main problem seems to be that I cannot believe that any content generated will be of any value to anyone other than as a pseudo contextual basis for the link "Bats are a flying mammal. They use sound waves to navigate. Sound is used in hearing aids. blah blah. blah." So how do you find decent link builders? How do you validate them? What are the key questions to ask? What are the red flags?

Where to start Energy and investment versus more impact
I would like someone to help me decide where should I take resources to do my SEO and where should I start with? I include 2 graphs to depict my current position versus competitors. Its been now 2 years I market my site and I feel I am so far away from my competitor. I wonder what they do to get so much links. I just don't know where to head. I hired some Indian people who seem like they were very good technically but it was only words.. I pay them for a couple of month to find out what they were doing was not leaded towards quality and they were not doing half of what they promised. I am a small business and I don't have a lot of budget to start but it will grow as SEO proved to be good. I have 15 years in this business so I'm looking for long terms relationship and or very good advices. ILfWjjB.png vmGGZXd.png

Can I start SEO before finishing my website?
Hi, I'm new to SEO and websites. I'm slowly building a website at the moment. I was wondering if I could set up a blog at the domain name I will use for my final website and begin doing SEO. Eg. I set up a blog using a CMS like Squarespace and begin blogging at domain.com/blog (with links to the domain.com/blog from the domain.com home page) and inbound links point to the domain.com 'front page'. And then add the design of the 'front page' of the website using Squarespace at a later stage eg. domain.com. Is this a good idea? Will it work? I'm anxious to get started on SEO. Thanks!

Website is Dropping in PR
Hey there. I'm new here at our company, and I'm working on SEO for a website we are working on (www.greenthumbdepot.com). We are doing some link-building (forums, articles, blogs, directory submissions, etc) and are currently trying to find some good quality links, as well. After 3 months, the site was on page 15 for the search term "hydroponics nutrients" on Google, and on the first pages of organic search for Bing and Yahoo!. However, looking again, our website has disappeared from the first 50 pages of Google (according to SEOMOZ). From what I can see, the incoming links are not spammy, and the articles we have been submitting have been driving a small amount of traffic to the site. Are we doing something incredibly wrong here? We've changed the meta tags a couple of nights ago. I'm a noob here, so please go easy on me! I'm learning... so thanks for any advice you can give. -jen

Ranking dropping for certain keyword
Hi There, Just wondering what has happened to my rankings as I cant seem to understand it. In the past week we've dropped from page 1 to page 10 for a certain keyword. The URL is also different that google displays - instead of displaying the individual page it now just links to the main domain. All the other keywords have remained consistent and some have improved. The page is still in the Google Index if I manually search for it. There hasn't been any dramatic change to the page except I've created a few links to it. Have we been penalized by Google and is there anything I can do?
