Domain forward or 301 redirect
-
My company recently acquired another company including their web presence.
We are soon ending their website and will be either 301 redirecting their domain to our domain or pointing their domain to our nameservers.
Their domain authority is only 25 while our domain authority is 32. Their domain was created in 1998 while ours was created in 1999.
So to keep our domain authority up or enhance it, should we do a 301 redirect or a domain forward.
And that is if there is any difference?
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,
I agree with Moosa,
Use a 301 redirect and if you have valuable content you can check that using Moz or Google Webmaster tools look for top pages or your analytics.
check out the method described here where you use page to page not domain to domain
http://moz.com/learn/seo/redirection
You'll want to 301 redirect instead of point them out your name servers because if you do that you are not really going to help your site out at all. This is a great article regarding merging to websites

here is some more helpful data

hope this helps,
Thomas

It's basically the same thing, just with a different process.
But just to answer, for SEO = 301's are always better.

Hello Chris,
Honestly speaking, I see this a little differently. In my opinion numbers and technical problems are less important than how your users are going to feel when you will have two websites or if you redirect other website to your domain name.
If the merger news is there in people, then it make a perfect sense to 301 redirect the bought company to yours and if not then you probably should spread this news through press release, social media and blog platforms and then make this 301 shift so that it make sense to the people within your industry.
Technically this 301 shift should increase your domain authority (if there is no panda or penguin attack on the website that you are trying to redirect).
Hope this helps!

301 Redirect from unused domain
Hi All First question here so go easy.. I have a property site which is working well so far considering it;s early days, unfortunately some of my earlier efforts did not go so well and one in particular I pretty much destroyed in my attempts to improve the site SEO. Lucky enough my SEO skills have improved quite a bit lately, largely thanks to the great tools, tutorials and experts here at Moz 🙂 My question is whether I can use a 301 redirect to pass the domain authority and any link equity from an unused site to the one that ive done a better job on? it would seem a little sketchy to me and I would prefer not to get slapped and penalized "again" for doing something dodgy... Thanks everyone and thanks for all the help over the last 6 months or so.. Wes Dunn

Best time to choose a canonical URL & 301 redirect
I have taken on the task of getting a fairly huge eCommerce site more SEO friendly & have just realized that no URL has been chosen as our preferred domain. Should we designate a preferred domain now or wait until after the first of the year since we are hitting our busy period right now?

301 redirect or rel=canonical
On my site, which I created with Joomla, there seems to be a lot of duplicated pages. I was wondering which would be better, 301 redirect or rel=canonical. On SeoMoz Pro "help" they suggest only the rel=canonical and dont mention 301 redirect. However, ive read many other say that 301 redirect should be the number one option. Also, does 301 redirect help solve the crawling errors, in other words, does it get rid of the errors of "duplicate page content?" Ive read that re-=canonical does not right? Thanks!

301 Redirect - What happens to backlinks
Hello... One of my sites is losing rankings in G. I received the webmaster notification of unnatural links... My question is, should i do a 301 redirect of every page on my site to a new domain? If so, do the backlinks (which i believe are causing my rankings to drop) carry over? How about the good backlinks? Also, what would happen to the rankings i currently have on page 1? Thanks

Are there any negative effects to using a 301 redirect from a page to another internal page?
For example, from http://www.dog.com/toys to http://www.dog.com/chew-toys. In my situation, the main purpose of the 301 redirect is to replace the page with a new internal page that has a better optimized URL. This will be executed across multiple pages (about 20). None of these pages hold any search rankings but do carry a decent amount of page authority.

301 Redirect With A Message And Delay
Hello, I'd like to sell a site I own. I'd like the site to be redirected to the buyers site with a 301 redirect. But I'd like the viewer to be informed that the site was purchased by this company and they will be redirect in 5 seconds.I'd like for the redirect to be a complete 301 and pass as much linklove as possible. Are you familiar with how to do this? Thanks, Tyler
