What is the Best Keyword Placement within a URL for Inner Location Pages?
-
I'm working on a website with 100s of locations. There is a location search page (Find Widget Dealer), a page for each state (Tennessee Widget Dealers) and finally a page for each individual location which has localized unique content and contact info (Nashville Widget Dealer). My question is is related to how I should structure my URL and the keywords within the URL. Keywords in my examples being the location and the product (i.e. widget).
Here is a quick overview of each of the 3 tiered pages, with the Nashville page being the most optimized:
- Find Widget Dealer - Dealer Page only includes a location search bar and bullet list links to states
- Tennessee Widget Dealers - Page includes brief unique content for the the state and basic listing info for each location along with links to the local page)
- Nashville Widget Dealer - Page includes a good amount of unique content for this specific location (Most optimized page)
That said, here are the 3 URL structure options I am considering:
- http://website.com/dealers/tennesee-widget-dealers/nashville
- http://website.com/dealers/tennesee/nashville-widget-dealer
Any help is appreciated! Thank you

#3 is a winner from my perspective, too.
Nice feedback on this thread, everyone. Great to see!
-
If no keywords in domain I would also go with #3 from a pure SEO perspective. Although post Hummingbird and post Pigeon I'm not sure it matters quite as much these days.
Just my 2 cents, no strong theory behind it except for good ole fashioned local SEO.
-
I get the same feeling when I look at the 3 options. My only hesitation is the old rule about keeping keywords early in the URL. Not sure if that really matter anymore.
-
There are no keywords in the domain. If there were I would definitely just go with dealers/tennessee/nashville and keep it simple and direct as you suggest.
-
Replying to your last statement if I were going to go with http://website.com/widget-dealers/tennesee/nashville, are you saying I should have the "widget dealers" page url be different and be just "dealers"? Wouldn't that confuse the bots on structure?
-
Just curious…are any of your keywords or location in the domain name?
If I were to search for this product, I would probably search something like "widget dealer Nashville Tennessee". I try to keep in mind what a person would search when structuring a URL. If your domain states the product, something like "www.widget.com/dealers/tennessee/nashville" would make the most sense to me.
Also, URL structure should semantically make sense as well as narrow down to the point of the page it links to. The URL affects SEO somewhat indirectly through user interaction and usability. Keep in mind, if you use long keywords at the end of your URL ("dealers/tennesee-widget-dealers/nashville") search engines will truncate it anyway in the results (www.widgets.com/dealers/.../nashville"). Basically, clean, simple, direct URLs are the best way to go.
Hope that helps

I agree Jarno! Option 3 looks and feels more logical than the others. I'd go with that as well!
-
Personally I would go with number 3, purely based on a feeling. Number 2 just feels and look wrong.
I think with number 3 you've got it all logically arranged. State / City dealer. Very logical.
Just my 2 cents.
Regards
Jarno

I would suggest not placing "widget-dealers" in any of the urls aside from the page that actually has the location search and bulleted list (which I'd assume is http://website.com/widget-dealers). Any state pages or location-specific pages could simply be structured as http://website.com/dealers/tennesee and http://website.com/dealers/tennesee/nashville respectively. This puts both the state and location closer to the start of the url; not to mention that shorter urls are generally better.
However, if you're adamant about using one of the 3 options outlined in your question, option 1 would logically be the correct structure as it tends from general to specific. The structure, from what I understand of your site, wouldn't make sense in the other two options.

Differentiating Franchise Location Names to better optimize locations
Hello All, I am currently spear heading SEO for a national franchise. I am coming across locations in the same city and zip code. I'm definitely finding difficulties in naming the location in a way that will be specific to the franchise locations (locations are 1 mile away from each other). I am looking to apply geo specific location names for each center regardless of local city terms. (e.g. Apexnetwork of north madronna, Apexnetwork of south madronna) Also, building the website and location to read (apexnetwork.com/north-madronna….. apexnetwork.com/south-madronna) While encouraging the client to continue using the geo specific terms while writing blogs. Is this best practice? Any feedback would help.

Keyword Tool Best Practices
VERY much a newbie with MOZ Pro (10 days into my 30-day trial), so for that, I apologize. I just want to get an idea of the time needed to accumulate data for keywords, and if I am doing all this right. I'm guessing this...use the tool and enter as many keyword possibilities as I can come up with for my website. Then wait a week or so. Then make a keyword decision. Is this the recommended or best practice? If it makes a difference, my website pertains to a local onsite service that I provide. Any web traffic more than 50 miles of my physical location would be a waste. My 1 on 1 session with Seun was great, but now I need to put it all together and make some traffic happen! Any other ideas, please throw them my way. If I'm completely off-base with this, feel free to send insults!

Looking to create a "best practice" doc on location pages. Anyone know of a useful resource?
I'm working for a few regional brands and would like to create a best practice doc for the structure of a location page. Has anyone seen anything recent regarding a structure for local, regional and national pages? Thanks all, Kevin

Company with different branches: Generic Keywords & Localized Keywords: Best practise?
INITIAL SITUATION: We offer a branded product/service in different cities. We have different contact pages for every city (—> basically just a form and a map, i.e. 100% SHALLOW). GOAL:
Local Website Optimization | | Cesare.Marchetti
We would like to rank for the branded keyword only (—> more generic search intent) but as well as for branded keyword + cities (—> more transactional search intent) combinations. REMARK: It would make little sense in my opinion to develop the individual contact pages (for every city) to „full“ pages with real content as there isn’t really specific content for the differenct cities to add. OPTIONS:
1) HOME page: target for the branded keyword CONTACT pages (one for each city): target for the branded keyword + city name HOME page: target for the branded keyword + all the city names CONTACT pages (one for each city): : NO keyword targeting at all HOME page: target for the branded keyword + different city names CONTACT pages (one for each city): target for the branded keyword + city name Add CANONICAL tag to main page ???!!!??? What is best practise? What would you recommend? Is there another solution? I really would like to know your opinion. Thanks a lot for your hints in advance.
Cheers,

How best to clean up doorway pages. 301 them or follow no index ?
Hi Mozzers, I have what is classed as doorway pages on my website. These have historically been location specific landing pages for some of our categories but from speaking to a number of different webmasters , then general consensus is that they are not in google guidelines so I will be getting punished by having them. My options are : I can 301 the pages back to their original category pages . This will conserve some link juice to pass back to the respective category page. I can set these as Follow No index. Not sure what will happen here with regards to link value etc. What would be best ?... Some of the pages do currently rank "fairly well" for some of the locations so I am getting traffic from them but I also know I will be getting a algorithmic penalty for having them so how best I clean these up ?. Also , by cleaning up the site structure , would I see any benefit here ? or will I have to wait for a new panda update/ refresh ? I thought the panda refresh won't use a new dataset thanks Pete

What to do with localised landing pages on listings website - Canonical question
Hi Run a pet listings website and we had tonnes of duplicate content that we have resolved. But not sure what to do with the localised landing pages. We have everything pointing back back to the main listings URL http://www.dogscatsandpets.co.uk/for-sale-stud-and-adoption/ but haven't pointed the URLs that show pets for specific towns and cities eg http://www.dogscatsandpets.co.uk/for-sale/dogs-and-puppies/in-city-of-london/ back to the main url. Obviously this is giving us duplicate content issues, but these pages do rank in local search and drive traffic into the site. So my question is should we canonicalise the local pages back to the main url and if we do will this mean our local landing pages will no longer rank? Is there any alternatives?

Drastic changes in keyword rankings on a daily basis
Anybody ever seen keyword rankings for a site change drastically from day to day? I've got a client, a local furniture store, whose local keywords (furniture + city) rank consistently well without much change, but when it comes to broader keyword rankings (like "furniture" or "furniture store") in their zip code, they'll go from ranking at the top of Google one day to not being ranked at all the next (at least according to Raven Tools). My best guess is that it's just a reflection of personalized results from Google, but such a dramatic change day in and day out makes me wonder.

Local franchise seo strategy. what could be the best practice?
Hello what Could be the best practice of seo and website optimization for a franchise company. Business model: Lets say, a company(company.com) situated in a country having stores in different cities (more than 2 stores in some), provides n number of services depending on store's location. Physical addresses for some stores are available and new stores shall be launched in future. But, the seo and website pages are needed for those locations at the moment as well. If I choose a sub folder, to give each store a URL. This is how it should look like Country level pages company.com, company.com/service1/ _ _ _ company.com/serviceN/ City level pages company.com/city1/, company.com/city1/location1/ , company.com/city1/location2/, company.com/city2/ , company.com/city3/ Q1) In case I make each service page specific to a store location for eg. company.com/city1/service1/, it will create duplicate content issue because content of company.com/city1/service1/ and company.com/service1/ shall be 60% same, except for **meta title, description and contact detail in footer. ** So, the question arises that shall i give canonical to country level main services page i.e company.com/city1/service1/ canonical to company.com/service1/ as it is very hard to make unique content for same services page. Q2) Or Do I need to rework on my complete website design and seo strategy?
