Optimizing Product Keywords (that are similar)

Hi Guys
Could someone let me know how varied my product keywords need to be?
I'm about to add a variety of products to my site, and the only true way of differentiating them is by colour.

Hi Faye -
It's unclear from your question whether these are all the same jacket that's available in different colors or if you have a variety of brands offering jackets of each different color.
I also can't tell if you're referring to only 1 URL or if you plan to have each jacket on a different URL. I would caution against having a bunch of different URLs targeting KWs only differentiated by their color. For one, a Panda penalty is possible - your site's pages may appear spammy in the same way a bunch of pages for the same service offered in different cities is now considered an outdated tactic.
It sounds like you're about to add a good amount of content to your site, so it would be good to better understand exactly how you're planning to go about this before moving forward. Happy to share my opinion if you can share a little more detail.

Awww, thanks. Glad I could help!

Thank you so much for clarifying this for me Monica.
You've been an absolute star.

I have a keyword that applies to 18 of my products. 20kW generator. I target this keyterm on all 18 pages in no different variation. The only unique factor on these pages is the brand name. Generac 20kW generator, Cummins 20kW generator and so on.
I don't think you need the slight variation at all. If you want to target both variations of the keyword you can without fear of penalty. If you want to target the same keyword on both pages you can also do that without fear of penalty. Does that make sense?
-
Yes these are are two completely separate products with "unique" brand names. The content on each of these pages is also completely unique providing informative information for the user.
If it's good practice to have variations of which ultimately means the same thing, then I'll do this...?
-
As long as the content is unique on both pages I don't see anything wrong with this technically. Do you have two different brands of brown hooded jackets?
-
Thanks Monica
If I was to use a specific keyword - Brown Hooded Jacket - could I use "Hooded Brown Jacket" as my keyword on another page? I'm hoping I can!
My concern is both keyword terms are almost the same, so would Google categorise them under the same search term or even penalise this practise? Or are both of these search terms ok and deemed as completely unique by Google?
Brown Hooded Jacket - Hooded Brown Jacket - Brown Jacket etc
Thanks
Faye

What you could get penalized for is having duplicate content that isn't seen as relevant. Keep your copy fresh, unique and informative.
-
No, I can't think of penalty that would exist for this.
-
Hi Monica
Thank you so much for your help. I think ultimately I'm wanting to know if Google penalises a site that has a variety of keywords which "closely" matched?
-
I don't think that your key terms need to be extremely varied. You want to optimize for the words people are searching for. If people are searching for brown hooded jacket, that should be your key term.
I would optimize like this:
Page Title: Enigma | Brown Hooded Jacket | London
URL: Domain/Category/Product
Meta Description: This Enigma Brown Hooded Jacket........(about 160 characters)
H1 - Enigma Brown Hooded Jacket
Try using the on page grader here to see if there is anywhere else you can improve the page for this key term.

Similar content multiple pages
I have run in to a situation on an e-commerce store where products from a certain manufacturer require a fairly large chunk of corporate information to be posted underneath the product description: I.E. Trademark information, etc. This information happens to be close to half the size of the product description information. Am I at risk of getting hit negatively for this portion of text duplicated across multiple products? I was considering putting a link to a separate informational page with this information but am not sure if it even matters? What are your recommendations brilliant SEO'erz?

Several keywords and only one page to posicionate
Hi there! I'm new in SEOMOZ and the SEO world (so excuse me if the question is so elemental.....). I'm having trouble when trying to apply the right seo strategy to one of the page of my companys corporate site. My company offers serveral services in the field of the communications&advertisement. Not being considered as different items in the services menu of the website is a requirement for the company. They want to describe them (all services) in a single page. The problem is that there's one title, one description tag, one url and many relevant keywords related. Should I convince them that this structure is a bad one regarding SEO or there's a way to solve this situation? Thanks in advanced.

Does having more products in a category than others help with ranking that page with a particular keyword like iphone cases. We have thousands of products and wondered if it would hellp these all being on the website.

Duplicate product information on ecommerce site
I am planning to launch an ecommerce website soon. There is no way to start with the original content for such a small startup like me. It's pretty expensive to get original content for 1000 (around) products. You know, there are a lot of other costs such as, software licences, modules, developer, designer fees, wholesale purchases, monthly subscription for services etc... This is what i am planning to do: Start with duplicate manufacturers' or amazon's product description, meta tags etc. Then gradually turn them into an original one. I assume, google will give me a low score due to duplicate content but, if i start with duplicate content first, and then change with the original ones over the time, will this change my score?

Over Optimization?
Yet another basic question....is it bad to try and optimize a page for numerous keywords that are all related? My site is an eCommerce site. So for and example: I am trying to optimize my homepage (www.shopconfections.com) for about 20 keywords that all directly describe my site. On product pages I am optimizing for about 15 keywords that all directly relate to my product. Many of my keywords are long tailed. Can there be too many? What are the consequences of that? Thanks!

product links
If you sell a range of products say 3 at the most, all on their own pages, is it ok to link to the other products within the range from each page? I have tried this and it eventually leads back to the same page is this a good, bad or doesn't really matter thing? Also is the anchor text still important?

Optimization of home page
Hi there I have an issue which, despite searching hard, I simply cannot find the right solution for. We have an index page that used to rank pretty well for a main industry keyword. However following a revamp of the site last year the kw slipped and no longer brings in decent traffic levels. The problem seems to be that the old static site had a sprinkling of variable anchor text links that brought value to the home page. Instead of the main anchor being "home" we would revert to "main keyword" and variations across the site sometimes in t he content but mainly on the nav bars. However the new CMS design structure restricts us considerably with anchor distribution and so instead we opted for the site logo on the masthead to have an ALT tag for "main keyword" but so as not to game google too much we added .."home" to the tag. Probably pointless but we figured it could do no harm. This ALT text is site wide Problem now is that we have lost the spread of internal nav bar anchors and variety etc. We have slipped in the serps for "main keyword" and I cant help thinking we are not maximising the anchors as we should. So what Im coming to is this.... How can we tell if Google is picking up the ALT tage anchor as the main anchor to rank the site at the expense of all internal text anchors. Despite retaining lots of embedded anchors - according to the Moz metrics these are not being picked up because OSE suggests the ALT tag anchor is taking precedence. The serps probably support this view as well. Should we: a) Vary the masthead ALT if there is no way of avoiding this being the most important link / anchor on the page b) Remove the ALT anchor and instead opt for content links high on the page (we do have nav bar links saying "Home" site wide as well which may overrid the embedded links?) c) Leave the ALT alone and still push for content anchors as described in b) What is the best way to handle this..? Best wishes and thanks Morch
