Combining Law websites to boost local results?

So we currently have 2 separate websites for the 2 areas of law we practice, Criminal Defense and Family. Currently our Criminal Defense website is the one affiliated with our google+ page and so it ranks well in local results, where as our Family website does not rank at all locally.
Would it be best for our Family practice if we merged it with our Criminal site? We all work out of the same office and share address and phone number, so I don't believe we can associate the Family website with a google+ page, but I am wondering if each site would show up in Local results for their individual keywords if the criminal site and law site were both subdomains of a main Firm website.

I agree with Hutch and Linda regarding the single site approach typically being more powerful than a multi-site approach. What shows up in the local search results is completely dependent on your Google+ Local page, and as your practice is only allowed 1 Google+ Local page (you can't have multiple listings covering multiple specialties) whatever is on that page is what will appear in the local results.
Now, that being said, something for you to consider is the multi-practitioner listing scenario. If there is more than one lawyer at the firm, you are allowed to have a Google+ Local page for each practitioner as well as the one for the practice. Google's most recent guideline update specifies that you must split up the categories between practitioners/practice. This has long been considered a best practice, but now it is a guideline. Without knowing the details of your specific scenario, I can only estimate how you would re-fashion the business to fit this marketing approach, but it would probably look something like this:

You consolidate your sites into a single site, with your brand being the unifying factor rather than your specialties being a cause for division.

You create a unique page on the website for each partner in the practice, including a unique phone number for each of the lawyers at which he/she is directly contactable.

You research Google's categories (the Moz Local category tool is great for this: https://moz.com/local/categories) and discover if there is an authentic way to divvy up categories like Family Law Attorney, Criminal Justice Attorney, etc between the partners and the practice. Remember - they cannot share categories.

You link the practice listing to the homepage and link the partners to their own landing pages on the site
In this way, you might be able to represent your practice, your partners and some of the specialties each of the lawyers has with Google+ Local pages and increase your chances of this business appearing in the local results for more than one category of terms.
*Now, all this being said, before you take such a step, you should spend some time researching two things:

Historic problems that have occurred over the years surrounding multi-practitioner listings. Linda Buquet's Local Search Forum would be a good place to look this up, as she has covered this topic many times and with great insight. Search other sites as well to get a sense of the potential issues with the multi-practitioner listing scenario.

This will be a big decision to make, involving a change in direction for how you think about marketing your business, and should only be undertaken if it truly feels like the right fit for your practice. It may or may not be. But I hope these ideas are helpful to consider in weighing your options!

Follow up question, is there a way to have the subsite show up in the local result? Or will I only be able to have a single url associated with the local result? for example could www.wearelawyers.com/family show up in the local result for family law web searches and www.wearelawyers.com/defense show up for criminal defense searches?

Yes I agree with Hutch.
Many companies feel like "divide and conquer" is the name of the game - but with Google Local "united we stand" typically works better. Then you are driving all your energy into one strong site instead of fracturing it. Many attorneys have a single site with multiple practice areas.
You are right, you can't have a separate G+ L page for the other practice area, but as long as the home page is optimized for both practice areas and you have the right categories you should be good.

Combining them will help your Family Law side. You can then create distinct landing pages for each type of law the firm practices instead of just having a generic home page for both, that way you can give a better user experience and better target specific keywords which I will assume are pretty different from the two law types.

Hi all- We recently had some pictures show up on our local profile that are not our store. When you click on them they have links to someone's blog as well. Unable to update client address in G+/Moz Local
Hello, I'm having an issue with Moz Local that involves a few complicating factors. I have a client who has moved to a new office and I was hoping to use Moz Local to help keep their NAP consistent during the transition. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the Google+ page that was set up for the business (and neither does my client). The client is relatively new, so we suspect the page was set up by the person/agency that set up their website previously. And since Moz Local gets the business address from the Google+ page it finds, and I can't access that page to change its address, I can't update the address in Moz Local. I DO have access to the client's website and Facebook account, and have already updated their listed address on those pages, but the Google+ page seems to still be a problem for verification. One of the other wrinkles is that since I have updated the Facebook page to show the new address, Moz Local has picked that up as a completely separate listing (a listing that uses an "and" instead of an "&" in the name). I was hoping to claim/verify THAT listing and see if I could merge the 2, but this other listing shows up as a separate purchase on Moz Local. I would prefer not to have to pay twice for the same listing, if at all possible. I would try to change the Facebook page name to use "&" instead of "and" in the hopes that Moz Local might recognize that it's the same business, but it looks like Facebook only allows you to change a page's name once, and I don't want to burn what might be needed to solve some other future problem. Lastly, the Moz Local listings are under another Moz account. I DO have access to that account, and can provide any specifics to the Moz staff if needed. To sum up: I can't change an address on Google+ and therefore cannot change the address on Moz Local. I'm not sure if this is a Moz Local issue, a Google+ issue, or (most likely) an issue on both ends, so any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Creating a new Google local business page vs. adding additional locations to an existing Google business page?
We are a service company that both travels to customer locations and serves customers at our business location. The split is about 80/20 (travel vs. serve customers on location). We just opened up a new office in a city about 1 hour away from our main location. The question is, should we create a new business page and account on Google local or should we add the new location to our existing google local account? The new location has a separate website, phone number, email etc. My inclination is to create a new local business account/page on Google. Has anyone experimented with both solutions and tested which option creates more powerful local signals for ranking?

Google Local Feeds - Cover & Profile Photos??
Hello - I am trying to help a biz w several dozen locations with their Google+ local pages. However, I'm not sure automation is the best solution: https://support.google.com/business/answer/3370250?hl=en In particular: Can you stipulate a Cover Photo and Profile Photo via Google's automated feeds? I see that you can add "images", but not much more than that. Do we have to manually upload cover photo/avatar info? If it turns out we have to, IMHO would be totally worth it even if time-consuming, but just trying to figure out the balance between automation vs manual factors.

Help with Google Places, local listings & Google+ please!
Hi all, I work for enterprise app development & mobile consultancy, Mubaloo. I recently asked a question around getting better rankings for London-based search results. One answer was to set up a local listing for Mubaloo's London office. I thought I had done by setting up our London office up on Places for Business - is this the same as a local listing? In addition to this, I can't connect our existing Google+ page to our local Mubaloo Bristol & London listings as Google has created separate pages for each! Is anyone else having this issue? Can it be resolved?

Yahoo Local Basic Listing Verifications Failing
Hey everyone, Over the last few weeks Yahoo Local's Basic Listings have been failing left and right for me. When working to verify a business listing, I have been trying the phone, snail mail and email verifications specifically, and am 100% sure I've been inputting the correct code, yet no matter how many attempts I make, I get the following error: http://i.imgur.com/pJ7ggBx.jpg This is for multiple accounts, not just a single instance. Seems Yahoo's just got an unfixed, prevalent bug. I've reached out to their Support for information, but they have been unresponsive. Anyone else running into this issue?

Hi All: I have a quick question. If you google "plumber" in San Francisco, you get about six options in the pack. After that the results go into very general topics about plumbers. Is there a search method that will allow me to see all of the plumbers in this city 700,000, not just the six Google chose?

Local Listing Question for Vet Office
We have done the off-page directory listings work for a veterinary office (submitting to the main data-aggregators, as well as sites such as CitySearch/Manta/Yelp) & now want to supplement those with submissions for each individual doctor. There are 8 doctors at their practice. The plan was to submit them to only 3 sites - the main data-aggregators of LocalEze, ExpressUpdateUSA & Factual. They only have one phone number (their main number) to use for listings. So can we submit the doctors all with the same number? Or is that a total waste of time b/c listings will end up being duplicated/merged down the road? What do you recommend that we do?
