Backlinking for small service oriented websites
-
I am a newby to the SEO world. We are a graphic/web design/development company that has been pulled into the SEO world. We work for a lot of clients that are sensing the need for websites but they don't have the capital to invest in a large website. So after building simple sites for them they come to us wanting to be ranked better in the SERPS. I can go through and do the basics of meta tag info but with small sites, there isn't a lot you can do. I feel I need to learn to do backlinking but am completely lost. When I read about backlinks a lot of people talk about blogging websites, not service industry websites. Does anyone have tips to learn backlinking for small service companies that want to target their local area? loggers, woodworking shops, landscape companies, cabinet shops, home cleaners, bulk food stores, etc. I'm interested in maybe blogposts, or tutorials to read/watch, or software to help me out, etc. Thanks in advance for your help!

One more thing...
That you may also find helpful the leaked Google Qualaity Rater Guidelines - it was leaked to us SEO practitioners last July or so...
Google for that term - but here's my own blog posting on it - http://www.canuckseo.com/index.php/2014/07/shhhh-google-quality-rater-guidelines-2014-leaked/ - and there's a link there too to download the 11 mb .pdf....

When it comes to backlinking, I can offer a suggestion. Get a list of competitors and use opensiteexplorer. You will be able to see what websites your competitors have content on and are generating backlinks from.
Now go through that list and identify the top level domains and see if you can also produce a high quality content they would link to. A great inforgraphic, or top tip article, something users will find relevant and useful.
I would suggest that as a start, It's something I've started doing but the key in my mind is not to spam but build reputable links that resonate with your company.

Mindlink has it nailed. Concentrate on your on-site SEO firstly. An important foundation is critical. Once your foundation is solid you can then look at building inbound links. MOZ has some excellent articles on these topics.
-
It is always good to start with the basic first. Start with your on page seo and then you can move to off page seo.
If you are targeting local then have a uniform local citation for the websites. Target quality local directory and submit your business there. Have a uniform NAP. Be consistent. Add business to google local etc.
If you want to start learning SEO i hope these links may help you up.

SEO is dynamic. Those methods which ranked website in the last few years may not rank your website this year. SEO is not a fast process. It takes time though.
Before starting with SEO .. learn how to discover the right keywords to target. How to create backlinks and how to diversify your anchor texts. Because you are not just going to build backlinks based on your money keywords only.
Good Luck

What Should We Do to Fix Crawled but Not Indexed Pages for Multi-location Service Pages?
Hey guys! I work as a content creator for Zavza Seal, a contractor out of New York, and we're targeting 36+ cities in the Brooklyn and Queens areas with several services for home improvement. We got about 340 pages into our multi-location strategy targeting our target cities with each service we offer, when we noticed that 200+ of our pages were "Crawled but not indexed" in Google Search Console. Here's what I think we may have done wrong. Let me know what you think... We used the same page template for all pages. (we changed the content and sections, formatting, targeted keywords, and entire page strategy for areas with unique problems trying to keep the user experience as unique as possible to avoid duplicate content or looking like we didn't care about our visitors.) We used the same featured image for all pages. (I know this is bad and wouldn't have done it myself, but hey, I'm not the publisher.) We didn't use rel canonicals to tell search engines that these pages were special made for the areas. We didn't use alt tags until about halfway through. A lot of the urls don't use the target keyword exactly. The NAP info and Google Maps embed is in the footer, so we didn't use it on the pages. We didn't use any content about the history or the city or anything like that. (some pages we did use content about historic buildings, low water table, flood prone areas, etc if they were known for that) We were thinking of redoing the pages, starting from scratch and building unique experiences around each city, with testimonials, case studies, and content about problems that are common for property owners in the area, but I think they may be able to be fixed with a rel canonical, the city specific content added, and unique featured images on each page. What do you think is causing the problem? What would be the easiest way to fix it? I knew the pages had to be unique for each page, so I switched up the page strategy every 5-10 pages out of fear that duplicate content would start happening, because you can only say so much about for example, "basement crack repair". Please let me know your thoughts. Here is one of the pages that are indexed as an example: https://zavzaseal.com/cp-v1/premier-spray-foam-insulation-contractors-in-jamaica-ny/ Here is one like it that is crawled but not indexed: https://zavzaseal.com/cp-v1/premier-spray-foam-insulation-contractors-in-jamaica-ny/ I appreciate your time and concern. Have a great weekend!

Why no backlinks from popular local news portals?
Hi friends. I build link portfolio for local businesses and found out that publishing payed news articles in biggest local news portals we never see backlinks coming from these portals. Interesting is that these articles even appears in google search. Backlinks is correct with anchor text. How is it even possible? For example latest article https://www.delfi.lv/bizness/komerczinas/kravu-parvadajumi-ar-temperaturas-rezimu-lielakie-izaicinajumi.d?id=52924741 or this https://www.tvnet.lv/7092731/es-ierobezojumu-ietekme-uz-kravu-parvadajumiem Stuff swears there is no restrictions. They even asked extra money for google indexing. You can see there is correct link in article. Any suggestion or idea how is this possible would be highly appreciated.

HOW DOES MOZ FILTER ISSUES ON WEBSITES?
Good day My company is trying moz for the first, and I am their web developer, I looked through the moz report and found something confusing when checking the issues. For example, I have URL:https://www.cham-training.co.za/free-skills-development-assessment.php and the mentioned URL can have parameters as follows: 1. https://www.cham-training.co.za/free-skills-development-assessment.php?target=Internship 2. https://www.cham-training.co.za/free-skills-development-assessment.php?target=Learnership the target parameter is just used to hold a value regarding the clients actual request, learnership, internship etc. However moz seem to recognize the same link with different parameters as different links and this makes the issue count to go up. For me, then this becomes false report. Please take a look at the attached image for reference. I got issues regarding duplicate title, but the truth is there's no duplicate titles its just that moz picks up the page as different because of the url parameters. Can someone please clarify why is that so or if there's any reason moz does that. I hope to hear from you guys soon. Thank you open?id=15uTf6Wn3jQWxELQodLgtlkswZKOtNSol

Home Service Ads Interview 2017 - Plumber
I am not sure how I feel about home service ads so far. They are supposed to make it easier for home service businesses to connect with clients but the difficulty level seems to be off the charts. I have my first client scheduled for an interview tomorrow. We have 2 previous interview schedules and something went wrong on their end. I have a Plumbing client about to do the video interview? Does anyone have any experience to help my client with the interview? What questions will they ask? What does he need to be prepared for to pass the interview? From a manager/consultant standpoint, does the client need an Adwords manager if he is running home service ads?
