Redirect old "not found" url (at http) to new corresponding page (now at https)
-
My least favorite part of SEO
I'm trying to redirect an old url that no longer exists to our new website that is built with https.
The old url: http://www.thinworks.com/palm-beach-gardens-team/
New url: https://www.thinworks.com/palm-beach-gardens/
This isn't working with my standard process of the quick redirection plugin in WP or through htaccess because the old site url is at http and not https.
Any help would be much appreciated! How do I accomplish this, where do I do it and what's the code I'd use?
Thank you Moz community!
Ricky

Hey Avin,
Don't worry about it anymore. I flipped my personal site running WordPress over to SSL last month and I'll tell you everything I did to make it work. Thomas mentioned, "you should be forcing HTTPS", and he's right but what the Yoast plugin lacks in forcing an HTTPS redirect, you can achieve with a WordPress Plugin.
If you want to see it working for my site, just go to http://www.kingrosales.com and watch it work
Here's what I did:
1. Install the WordPress HTTPS plugin. I found another plugin before this one called, HTTPS Redirection, but it didn't do the job.
2. One of the thinks that you will also need to do is change all the hardcoded links to images within your content that may be calling the http version. If you don't, any images or embedded content from your site will cause the browser show that your site is trying to be https but some components are not, so you're gonna get a caution sign over the padlock.
You can do one of two things to fix all these hard coded links to content within your site:
- Go through each page and post and change the img src to the https version.
- Open phpmyadmin and go run an SQL query to find and replace http with https.
In the Yoast SEO plugin, check the Edit Files area so you can check the htaccess file. In mine, it looks like eventhough I disabled the HTTPS Redirection plugin, it has some lines in there placed above all the other rules:
BEGIN HTTPS Redirection Plugin
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]</ifmodule>END HTTPS Redirection Plugin
3. Lastly, install the Redirection plugin by John Godley so you can manage any other 301 redirects manually. Its an awesome tool and I wish I had installed this a long time ago. It has a log of all 404 and then you can just click the "Add Redirection" and when you scroll to the bottom (because nothing appears to happen when you click it), it will give you a form where you just have to put the URL of the new slug.
I hope it helps!

Along with Redirection I think the Yoast WordPress SEO premium plug-in is probably the best redirection and search plug-in for WordPress.
One thing I wanted to let you know is that you are showing HTTPS you should be forcing HTTPS though I do not believe it has anything to do with this particular issue.
Add the following redirect to the the top of your .htaccess file:
RedirectMatch 301 ^/palm-beach-gardens/$ https://www.thinworks.com/palm-beach-gardens-team/?p=$
You may need to implement force HTTPS
Use https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-force-https/
of course depending on your hosting provider and other factors you can do one better and implement it in this method
sincerely,
Thomas

I use the Yoast SEO plugin. It has a great utility for redirects. It's only in the paid version though. It's worth the $ but it's not cheap. $89

All URLs in the site is 302 redirected to itself
Hi everyone, I have a problem with a website wherein all URLs (homepage, inner pages) are 302 redirected. This is based on Screaming Frog crawl. But the weird thing is that they are 302 redirected to themselves which doesn't make any sense. Example:

https://www.example.com.au/ is 302 redirected to https://www.example.com.au/ https://www.example.com.au/shop is 302 redirected to https://www.example.com.au/shop https://www.example.com.au/shop/dresses is 302 redirected to https://www.example.com.au/shop/dresses Have you encountered this issue? What did you do to fix it? Would be very glad to hear your responses. Cheers!0 -
How to 301 Redirect /page.php to /page, after a RewriteRule has already made /page.php accessible by /page (Getting errors)
A site has its URLs with php extensions, like this: example.com/page.php I used the following rewrite to remove the extension so that the page can now be accessed from example.com/page RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | rcseo
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php [L] It works great. I can access it via the example.com/page URL. However, the problem is the page can still be accessed from example.com/page.php. Because I have external links going to the page, I want to 301 redirect example.com/page.php to example.com/page. I've tried this a couple of ways but I get redirect loops or 500 internal server errors. Is there a way to have both? Remove the extension and 301 the .php to no extension? By the way, if it matters, page.php is an actual file in the root directory (not created through another rewrite or URI routing). I'm hoping I can do this, and not just throw a example.com/page canonical tag on the page. Thanks!0 -
980 links from 75 domains and Graded "A" on Moz Page Grader-- still not ranking for our term. Thoughts?
A few additional interesting details: A blog post we wrote with the same keyword ranks 8, but this page does not crack the top 20. Crazy competitive term-- top SERP are from HBR, Entrepreneur and Inc. We use Instapage as landing page builder-- could this effect our rankings? URL is not a subdomain Pretty stumped over here. Thanks y'all!

Do I need to re-index the page after editing URL?
Hi, I had to edit some of the URLs. But, google is still showing my old URL in search results for certain keywords, which ofc get 404. By crawling with ScremingFrog it gets me 301 'page not found' and still giving old URLs. Why is that? And do I need to re-index pages with new URLs? Is 'fetch as Google' enough to do that or any other advice? Thanks a lot, hope the topic will help to someone else too. Dusan

What are the effects of having Multiple Redirects for pages under the same domain
Dear Mozers, First of all let me wish you all a Very Happy, Prosperous, Healthy, Joyous & Successful New Year ! I'm trying to analyze one of the website's Web Hosting UK Com Ltd. and during this process I've had this question running through my mind. This project has been live since the year 2003 and since then there have be changes made to the website (obviously). There have also been new pages been added, the same way some new pages have even been over-written with changes in the url structures too. Now, coming back to the question, if I've have a particular url structure in the past when the site was debuted and until date the structure has been changes thrice (for example) with a 301 redirect to every back dated structure, WOULD it impact the sites performance SEOwise ? And let's say that there's hundreds of such redirections under the same domain, don't you think that after a period of time we should remove the past pages/urls from the server ? That'd certainly increase the 404 (page not found) errors, but that can be taken care of. How sensible would it be to keep redirecting the bots from one url to the other when they only visit a site for a short stipulated time? To make it simple let me explain it with a real life scenario. Say if I was staying a place A then switched to a different location in another county say B and then to C and so on, and finally got settled at a place G. When I move from one place to another, I place a note of the next destination I'm moving to so that any courier/mail etc. can be delivered to my current whereabouts. In such a case there's a less chance that the courier would travel all the destinations to deliver the package. Similarly, when a bot visits a domain and it finds multiple redirects, don't you think that it'd loose the efficiency in crawling the site? Ofcourse, imo. the redirects are important, BUT it should be there (in htaccess) for only a period of say 3-6 months. Once the search engine bots know about the latest pages, the past pages/redirects should be removed. What are your opinions about this ?

Effects of having both http and https on my website
You are able to view our website as either http and https on all pages. For example: You can type "http://mywebsite.com/index.html" and the site will remain as http: as you navigate the site. You can also type "https://mywebsite.com/index.html" and the site will remain as https: as you navigate the site. My question is....if you can view the entire site using either http or https, is this being seen as duplicate content/pages? Does the same hold true with "www.mywebsite.com" and "mywebsite.com"? Thanks!

Why are new pages not being indexed, and old pages (now in robots.txt) remain in the index?
I currently have a site that was recently restructured, causing much of its content to be reposted, creating new URL's for each page. To avoid duplicates, all of the existing pages were added to the robots file. That said, it has now been over a week - I know Google has recrawled the site - and when I search for term X, it is stil the old page that is ranking, with the new one nowhere to be seen. I'm assuming it's a cached version, but why are so many of the old pages still appearing in the index? Furthermore, all "tags" pages (it's a Q&A site, like this one) were also added to the robots a few months ago, yet I think they are all still appearing in the index. Anyone got any ideas about why this is happening, and how I can get my new pages indexed?

Maximum of 100 links on a page vs rel="nofollow"
All, I read within the SEOmoz blog that search engines consider 100 links on a page to be plenty, and we should try (where possible) to keep within the 100 limit. My question is; when a rel="nofollow" attribute is given to a link, does that link still count towards your maximum 100? Many thanks Guy
