Adding content to an eCommerce site
-
We're creating buyers guides for the each category on our ecommerce website and we're not sure where to place the content for maximum impact.
Option a: place the content on the category page beneath the product listings
Option b: place the content on our blog and created links between the content and category page
Which option do you think would be most effective/ user friendly? Any thoughts, help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Alick

Do you have a Knowledge Base or FAQ section on your site? I would add content like this in one of those places. If you don't have something like this built in, I would recommend using the category pages. This kind of content is great for user experience. My only hesitation would be that more likely than not, most of the content would be below the fold, and it might not get as much view as it would if it had its own page on your site.
Can you split content on your category pages? Maybe show one paragraph above the products and the rest below. Or, if you can add JS to the page, use a script to hide a portion of the content behind a read more button. Ideally, content like this should really have a page all its own. If you can manipulate how content is displayed on the category pages, you should be able to make it work there as well.

In my experience, A/B testing for content placement yields different results for different products/languages/seasons. So many variables, I'd just use those resources for more valuable content testing.
Are your buyer guides downloadable or HTML? For downloadable guides, I'd have a thin content block above the fold on category pages right above the products. Another effective spot would be a taller block above the fold in the sidebar on the same category pages. If your guides are a really big deal, have a content block on your homepage introducing these new guides and then link internally on where to get/view them.
Whether you're hosting downloadable or HTML guides, I'd still have links to them on your blog. But without more details on your site, I can only offer this general advice but feel free to update us.

If I was creating a genuine "buyers guide" for an entire category of products, that should be something substantive, requiring a lot of work, and as such would be a valuable stand-alone addition to a website. So, I would give that type of content a special page on my website, feature it prominently, and not make it a caboose on a category page.

Hi Ryan, thanks for your response.
Do you know of any good (elegant) ways to do this? If you could link to examples I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

My hunch is that it'd be most user friendly as part of the category level pages and that would work better for tying that content into the pages via search. You can always find other things to blog about if you're worried about lacking links to and from the blog and category pages.
A design change like that would also be good to split test as it will give you a better idea if it's something that is also helping you increase conversions. Cheers!

Where should I centre my content Hubs?
I look after a manufacturing site which has a well structured architecture when it comes to our products. There is also a benefits section and an about section. In addition to managing the three main information sections I've also been setting up a blog with topical content divided into four categories (Built environment, Secondary glazing in practice, Treat of the month, Project profile). My question is, where do I position my content hubs? Having worked through Cyrus's 'How to Rank 25 Step Master SEO Blueprint', I've realized that my approach of simply linking back to main top level pages is at best arbitrary, at worst negative in terms of SEO. Would I be better off asking our designers to set up category landing pages within the blog that relevant new copy can be linked to (currently the blog is just set up without category landing pages and I categorize each post with a tag that is used to sort the posts into their respective location on the blogs homepage? Currently the blog is an option on the main sites top level navigation and I link relevant blog pieces to relevant areas within the site. Basically I'm struggling to understand how to implement Cyrus's recommendation to create themes with my current website structure. Can anyone help? Thanks Mozers

First Post! Local Electrician Site.
I have a site for a local electrician that I just can't seem to get to move up the SERPS. I've tried everything form on-page optimization to local link building but It seems to always hover around position 11-17 for my keyword 'electricians grimsby' - which is not very competitive. Any advice would be invaluable.

Links between own sites cause bad pagerank?
Many people say PR does not matter, but for me its an indicator that links from a domain with higher PR may rank better. My client has a about 4 different travel-sites of very different kinds of travelling. His sites are not ranking bad but all sites have just a PR 0-2 although the content is unique. I made the experience that even sites with few content will have at least a PR of 3 after some years with no SEO effort. One reason is may some part of duplicate content (4 Tours begin in Manaus, so the description for Manaus is on all the 4 Tour pages the same) but another is that the pages have few external links but many of other sites he is owning... like: also check out this -> link to another own site. Question: If I take all these links away (they even don't cause many referrals at all) - will this have a positive effect on rankings? Means trying to have always more external links from not self owned sites is a good start? Thanks for sharing your experiences Holger

What do you when the wrong site links to you?
In doing research of our backlink profile, I've found a couple dozen of links from off-topic websites linking to us. You see, our domain is Voices.com and tends to scoop up links from unrelated sites that are clearly trying to link to another site such as evp-voices.com or areavoices.com or dozens of others. What would you do? Ask the webmaster to remove them because they are completely unrelated? Or would you keep them if you believed they aren't causing any harm?

Old Site not Passing Along Links?
Recently, we created a new website for a client, and put it on a new domain. We put a 301 redirect site-wide on the old site. The 301 is working correctly, and any visit to the old site is now going to the new one. So, from a functionality standpoint, we're looking good. However, looking at the domain authority of the sites, it doesn't seem that the old links are passing value to the new site. The old site had 43 linking root domains, and a domain authority of 30, compared to the new site with 16 linking root domains and an authority of 22. If I understand correctly, the links should be viewed as pointing to the new site and passing link juice to the new one, correct? Is there a reason why this may be happening that I should be looking into? Any thoughts or advice on this one would be appreciated. Thanks guys!
