Does Google really care about cheaters?
-
In analysing my competitors website I have discovered that they have over 600 fake pages that appear to have been created by some sort of internal search engine software, all pages are exactly alike except for the keyword and the words "no results found" on every page. I have discovered, elsewhere, that their duplicate content is abnormally high, and that their pages are stuffed with keywords.(in on page grader)
I come out top in every section in Moz open site explorer, except internal links and total links.
Yet they sit at number 1, while my site is number 2,
I believe that copying their antics would surely make me fall foul of Google, and certainly would never risk it.
but with the keyword only getting 30 searches a month, are google bothered about them doing this, should I resign myself to not being number 1
and is there anyone on this Forum who believes that I should use the same tactics, to get above them.

Stick with it Richard Collins. We all empathize.

Thank you all for your excellent answers
I was definitely not asking for permission. I guess I was expressing frustration and looking for answers.
I have an advantage over my competitors in that I own the copyright to everything I do so i can create content for every client, that can include, the audio track I produce for them, the lyrics of their song, possibly video, and the text telling their story. The main reason for doing this is to enable them to share it with friends and family, but I am aware that I should get an SEO bonus from it too.
The other site created another 170 fake search engine pages this month. It isn't that they don't have content at the front end of their site, but I think people will read the home page, and if they like what they see get the phone number or fill in the contact form. I think that approach will effect their bounce rate.
My approach has been to encourage the visitors to watch a video to see a fully personalized singing telegram n action but more importantly the reactions of the people's faces. The plan is that they will stay on the site longer, and that that will eventually improve my site in Google's eyes..
I don't want to take the cheater route, even if it got me to number one.
Thanks for your replies. Much appreciated

In theory a spam report should be the thing to do, but usually it doesn't change anything.
I remember seeing a video of either Cutts or Muller saying that a spam report is not going to produce any direct effect, they just use the information to improve their algo on next update.
I know for sure that in certain cases they take immediate action, because months ago a news site with DA90+ here in Italy started selling do-follow links in their articles (by the way for a small fee of 15k euro per month!), I reported that, and few others did, and within one month they got a manual action in their gwt account and they stopped doing it.
But in many other cases where both I and colleagues in the business did spam report for much smaller sites, nothing happen, and after years I can say they are still happily enjoying good ranking for very obvious black hat tricks.
SEO and democracy doesn't seems to get along well.

I think every SEO struggles with this question from time to time. It's frustrating to see competitors rank high with shady techniques. On the long run, I remain convinced that "clean" SEO and putting your customer/visitor experience first remains the winning strategy. And yes, sometimes Google does confirm it. With the Panda update in May last year I saw a lot of our shady competitors take a plunge in rankings, while our sites increased both rankings & search traffic (in some cases +60% in search traffic). So be patient, Google becomes better and better at fighting spam.

You'll come across some sites that rank well despite themselves. Still, it's hard to believe that pages like those will do anything for the users visiting them, plus their bounce rate is going to be incredibly high. Chances are you're going to be getting some--if not all--of the visitors that try their page as a #1 result, don't find anything worthwhile, then go to your page.
Matt offers you some excellent long term advice on the best path to take. I'd only add that you can emphasize your competition's lack of content all the more by offering content/services/products/usability that blows them out of the water. Cheers!

The post that drew me into Moz and kept me here was Wil Reynolds classic "How Google Makes Liars out of the Good Guys in SEO"
As far back as 2012 Wil was concerned he was doing the right stuff and being beaten by cheaters, much like your post above. Spam won in 2012. It won in 2013. It can still win in 2015. But it's a LOT better. Penguin & Panda have cleaned up a great deal of spam.
I suppose the question is like buying a property that has a lake in the middle of your 4 acres. You start to dry up the lake and you make great progress. One day 6 years from now you step in a bit of a puddle, your shoe gets ruined and you think "should I just move?!" Don't move yet.
You have to do what makes your business successful within the bounds of what you feel is ethical & morally right. If you're asking for our permission, go for it. Do whatever you wish.

Accurate Google Keyword Ranking for a domain
Hi Folks, SEO N00b here, in a new job so please go easy on me if i ask stupid questions. I'm looking for some clarification on Google Keyword rankings. I am looking for accurate Google Keywords rankings as when I log into Google Webmaster Tools I am given values like (6-10) for a ranking? When I used SEOMoz (Research Tools -> Keyword & Ranking -> Rank Tracker) it gives me an even less accurate range by simply saying >#50?Why is SEOMoz giving a completely useless metric? Why is its actual rank not shown? I know rankings are becoming less useful as a metric with Google moving toward personalized search but I still have reports to deliver to clients so the conversation of what metrics are going in the report is to be had another day. Right now I just want to get accurate rankings, from what I've found online Google Webmaster tools is recommended as the de-facto ranking tool but it doesn't provide accurate results so how can that be (yes I know it averages out the ranking but 6-10 is a range of values not a single value that represents an average) Dave

My Google Keyword Rankings are Missing. Anyone else having this problem?
I logged in to pull my reports for my clients and noticed that I am missing all of my ranked keywords for my campaigns for the Google columns. One word is ranked. All the rest have a TUES sign that looks like it references Tuesday. Is anyone else having this issue? I had over 30 words ranked last week. Only showing 1 today. The rankings for Bing and Yahoo are intact though. There is no report showing a decline in ranking for all those words either (in the google column.) This is also happening in another campaign of mine but they have a WEDS in place of the google ranking... ugh Frustrated...

How seomoz sets the country for google to monitor my rankings?
In some of my campaign settings I use specific country for search engine (e.g. "Google Slovakia"). Some times I check the rankings manually too. My process for this: 1. Open a new Chrome incognito window (be sure that that's the only open incognito window) 2. go to google.sk, type in the keyword 3. at the bottom of the page select advanced search, select language: slovak, resubmit the query That's it. With my process, the monitored keywords are not there were seomoz reports them. So the question: with what settings (domain, language anything else) seomoz is tracking the rankings in country specific search engines?

Google SERP count 100
I'm not finding a clear solution to getting 100 results in the Google SERP. I'm currently using Firefox as I use Chrome for being logged into Google (Gmail, Docs, etc.) I tried the Grease Monkey script, no luck. I tried appending the url with &num=100 (looks like that may have been killed in 2010 which may explain why the GM script isn't working). And it doesn't look like any toolbar, SEOMoz included has that functionality, any ideas or places to look? In addition, does anyone have a good SERP numbering tool? If I do a search and the first page, including Local & Organic has 15 results, when I click over to the 2nd page it starts back at #11, kind of defeats the purpose of using a numbering tool 😉 Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much!

Confused by Google Mobile App (on Blackberry) results??!
First off, Hi guys I'm a new user here, in fact only in my second week of my trial period. However, I can assure you that I'll be continuing my subscription as this website is 'one hell of a bit of kit!'. Now, to my predicament. I have a website: http://www.limegreenofficeproducts.co.uk which I am trying to move on up the rankings in Google (just like everyone else...). Well, I have followed the instructions and guidance through the Campaign Manager and I have 'A' ratings now for a couple of my preferred keywords, namely 'Office Supplies' & 'Office Products'. I also have a number of textlinks with these exact terms, some quite powerful (I'm the only outbound link on a Homepage PR5 on one). Anyway, being a complete and utter control freak - I wake up in the morning and check my rankings using the Google Mobile App for Blackberry whilst throwing as much coffee as possible down my neck. Basically (if you're not familiar with this app, it is just the same as connecting to the mobile internet and carrying out a search - or at least it should be). Well I was really excited to find that I was ranking at No.41 for 'Office Supplies' and No.17 for 'Office Products'. When I fully woke up and ventured to the office, I checked on the Mac through the normal Google UK and I'm nowhere, for either? What makes it even more confusing is that the results on the mobile seem to be intermittent - so if I check at 11.00am I'm No.17, 11.05 I'm nowhere, 11.10 back to No.17 - but only on the Mobile App. I have the Mobile App set up to Google UK, so that can't be the problem. I'm just wondering if either the Mobile App is ahead of the 'Real' Google UK results, or behind. The main reason for asking, is so that I can establish whether what I am doing is having a positive, or negative effect on the rankings. And if this is an quicker way to find out - then great! I assume the advice to come back will be '..ignore the mobile app..' but as it's being kinder to me than the 'Real' Google I'd like to be a bit kinder to it, and give the little fella the benefit of the doubt. But having said that I just checked the search results (Top 1000) for Keywords 'Office Supplies' & 'Office Products' - For Office Products the site was No.614 and for 'Office Supplies it wasn't in the top 1000, ouch. I know these things take time, as I have worked on a couple of other sites of ours and it seems that as soon as you are about to throw the towel in, the results just kick in. I'm not expecting miracles overnight, far from it - but it has me really confused. Does anyone have any suggestions/advice?(except '...get a life coffee fiend') Regards Limegreen
