How do you check mobile-friendliness when you have a separate mobile site?
-
One of our clients has a separate mobile site, and we've setup the rel="alternate" on the main site homepage, but https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/ still fails the site (it checks the main site, instead of the mobile site) when we put in the main site URL. Is there any way to check that we've got everything setup correctly? (We have a lot of experience with mobile responsive sites, but not so much with separate URLs.)

Great - glad it was sorted out!

Got this issue fixed. The issue was that robots.txt was blocking the Javascript file that does the redirect, so Google couldn't see the redirect.
-
Hi Adam
I have not personally used one, but this particular search looks like it uncovers some that are available. "Simple Mobile Redirect" has the best reviews. Also, this is a good general guide from Google on user agent detection / HTTP redirects.
-
To handle the redirect to the mobile site. Sounds like the JavaScript this client had in place isn't working correctly.
-
Hi Adam
What are you looking for a WP plugin to do specifically?
-
Adam,
Did the same check with Firefox (with a Mobile user agent) & still get the desktop version. Don't think the problem is with the redirect but with the detection.
I guess if you search for User Agent sniffer Wordpress you should be able to find some tools. Afraid I can't help you with that (this is the point where I handle it over to the technical department myself...)

You would get a 200 response...the redirect is JavaScript, not server side. Maybe we should change that? Do you have a WP plugin you recommend?
-
^ Adam, there you go! Great job, Dirk!
-
The redirect was setup by a previous vendor, but I've not noticed any issues with them.
-
I just tested the url on web-sniffer.net with mobile user agent - it seems that the tool you use to detect if the user agent is a mobile one doesn't work. I get a normal 200 status (from the desktop site) - idem like Patrick

Hi Adam
Are you sure your redirects are set up properly? I tested this on my phone and it seemed a little wonky. Are those put in place correctly?
-
Thanks. The Google doc is what we were using as our guide to set up the code on the homepage. So you're saying that the main site homepage should pass the mobile friendly test tool if we have it set up right? URL is arcticair4me.com
-
NM the URL is arcticair4me.com
-
Yeh, that's the doc we followed in setting up the code on the homepage. I'll PM you the URL.
-
The normal way to check is like you did - if it fails it implies something is wrong with the way you set it up. Check the link in Patrick's answer - the doc of Google is quite detailed how to set it up properly.

Hi there
Do you have an example URL we can check? Did you only do this on the homepage and no other internal pages?
Also, did you set up your redirects properly? Check out this resource from Google.
I would read that through that and make sure your code lines up correctly.
Let me know - would love to help! Good luck!

Mobile Usability update mobile and desktop versions
Hello, A number of our clients have both m.website.com and website.com versions of their site. Per the latest update coming in April from Google, do I need to make sure all clients with just a desktop version are mobile-friendly (according to WT). Also, do I need to make both versions for those clients that have both m.website.com and website.com mobile-friendly or just the m.website.com? Thank you!!!!

Redirect chains after a site migration
Hi A clients site was originally canonicalised to the www. from the non www versions Now its migrating to an international config of www.domain.com/uk and www.domain.com/us with the existing pages/urls (such as www.domain.com/pageA) 301'd to the new www.domain.com/uk/pageA for example Will this will create a 301 redirect chain due to the existence of the original canonicalised urls or is the way that works 'catch all' so to speak, and automatically update the canonical 301 redirects of the non www old architexcture url's to the new international architecture URL's ? I presume so but just want to check ? cheers dan

Robots.txt & Mobile Site
Background - Our mobile site is on the same domain as our main site. We use a folder approach for our mobile site abc.com/m/home.html We are re-directing traffic to our mobile site vie device detection and re-direction exists for a handful of pages of our site ie most of our pages do not redirect the user to a mobile equivalent page. Issue – Our mobile pages are being indexed in desktop Google searches Input Required – How should we modify our robots.txt so that the desktop google index does not index our mobile pages/urls User-agent: Googlebot-Mobile Disallow: /m User-agent: `YahooSeeker/M1A1-R2D2` Disallow: /m User-agent: `MSNBOT_Mobile` Disallow: /m Many thanks

How to remove a thin site penalty
Wondering if anyone could help out. A while back I made an affiliate store using wordpress and merchants products feeds. I didn't get found to adding any unique content to the site and, as was to be expected, I gained a penalty and my search traffic died. A few months back I redesigned the store, still using merchant csv but now with 98% unique content on each page. However, try as I may I still cannot get anywhere in the engines. The domain doesn't even rank for it's own name!! I have submitted reconsideration request but they have replied saying no penalty on the site. The domain is www.digitalcatwalk.co.uk. While the domain isn't massively strong I would prefer not to have to start again as I feel it is a very good domain name. Any advise would be most gratefully received. Thanks Carl

How to turn WP site into Ecom site?
I have a couple of old wordpress sites that are old affiliate blogs. I currently sell products that are on amazon on these sites and sell quite a bit of volume. I have found a source and can afford the inventory to replace Amazon with my own product. So the dilema is how to turn these wordpress sites into ecommerce sites. The thing I am worried most about is that each site gets about 100-200 visitors a day for great buying keywords. I obviously don't want to lose my rankings. What are the options of turning a wordpress site into a store. I am not interested in plugins or some of the other solutions that make the store look very cheap and I would assume horribly convert. If you have inner pages ranking for keywords how does that work? Do the post pages become product pages? So to sum up I guess I am asking, what are the options that are of the higher quality that will also help me keep my rankings? Thanks

Merging two sites into one
I have two websites, www.joecline.com and www.affinityproperties.com. Originally, I wanted joecline.com to be focused on west austin only. I now realize that I only have time to really handle the promotion of one site. I'm wondering SEOwise, which url would be better to keep. I would consolidate all content on one site and 301 the migrated site to the new URLs in the domain which I would keep. Any ideas would be great. Thanks Joe
