Homepage not ranking for main keyword, all other pages ranking slightly for their own keyword phrases.
-
Dear Mozzers,
We have an ecommerce website (www.pashmina-boutique.com), we want to rank the homepage for the keyword "pashmina". Problem is, we are nowhere to be found, not even in the top 100 search results of Google. It is indexed, we have no crawl errors, except that we had some problems with our hosting (503's), the crawler of Google bumped in a few of those. And we are fixing it.
Our other pages, e.g. (http://www.pashmina-boutique.com/15-white-pashminas) ranks for "white pashminas" 24th and "white cashmere pashminas" 23rd.
We have done no linkbuilding, in Majestic, you can check that. We have been offline for a long time (over 6 months) and about 3 weeks ago, we did a redesign (SEO). We relaunched, everything is looking fine except the homepage isn't ranking for the main keyword.
Could you guys check it out? Is it over-optimization? It can't be Penguin, Panda would be a surprise too. Or do we still have to wait for the monthly Panda data-refresh?
We are currently busy with this issue, once this is solved - that the homepage is ranking - we will start linkbuilding.

Thanks, going to watch it for the second time
About the cannibalization of the main keyword, yes we are going to lower the amount of our main keyword. BUT if Moz their primary keyword would be "SEO", then all other pages on their website - and I bet that atleast 95% of their pages contain the keyword "SEO" - would rank lower or the homepage would rank lower. But this isn't the case, it makes it stronger because your whole site talks about this topic / keyword.
-
@Don's second post:
Yes, I was thinking about keyword cannibalization too. Lowering the amount of the main keyword alone [pashmina] on a different page than the homepage is what we want to achieve, but not always possible. Take Casemate or Otterbox as an example, the keyword [cases] is probably their main keyword, or [smartphone cases]. All over their site you can see that they use it in every category, every page, about everywhere. Neil Patel made a nice post the other day about this. The more common a keyword (phrase) is used over the whole website, the better it ranks. (Without going to far and getting keywords cannibalized.

Thanks Don for your answer.
Yes, we are going to build links. Don't worry :).
However I don't agree to the following statement you made "_Y_ou don't wait for a page to rank to start link building, you start link building to get a page to rank." I thought I missed something, that there might have been a technical issue that the homepage wasn't ranking, over-optimization or anything like that. The reason why I believed it was almost impossible to not be included in the top 100 results, was because I noticed websites showing up that were having really low-quality content.
I already checked the Page Grader, we are going to lower the amount of keywords in our text.
Good point about the position of the homepage text. Maybe we will put it above the product carrousel.
-
Yes, hosting is currently a problem that we are working on. Linkbuilding is up next :).
I just thought there was some issue with the homepage, that's why I didn't build links yet.
Thanks Mike for responding!

Hi Patrick!
Thank you for answering. We will build a sitemap, thanks for the reminder.
I am going to fix these pages, letting them all getting indexed.
We just changed our homepage title, a bit more SEO driven, to see if that would make a difference. We are currently working on our content. What do you mean with the titles looking spammy? Yes they are 'basic', just describing the page like "white cashmere pashminas" but this isn't spammy. We will mix it up a bit.
Thanks for the help though, you gave some good tips that I will use for sure!
-
Thank you for answering.
"pashmina" isn't that competitive. In top 100 results, you'll find so many, many low quality websites.
I know that the others rank better because it's long tail, yes, but by this time I would think our homepage would be good enough to rank 4-5th page.
What I said about linkbuilding, was to explain that there wasn't any white/grey or black hat linkbuilding done to our website.
-
Hi there
I want to say cannibalization isn't a bad thing if it's done in a well structured and thought out way. Here's a more recent Whiteboard Friday regarding this topic, along with targeting and density.
I would agree with you that "pashmina" is a little overused on this particular site and should be cleaned up.
Just wanted to add that Whiteboard Friday here.

One area that is often overlooked, and that is hugely powerful for any site, is internal linking.
An internal link to a page will tell Google that you consider it to be important, based on the phrase you are using. Remember that with internal linking, you should be as descriptive as possible.
I often point people towards this document, as it contains so much valuable information:

Need to follow up on myself here.
I also noticed that you use the keyword "Pashmina" in almost every single one of your page titles. Along with "cashmere" they are very likely making your site a victim of keyword cannibalization.
Small list of titles:
- 100% Cashmere Pashmina - Blue Shadow
- 100% Cashmere Pashminas (2) - Pashmina-Boutique.com
- 100% Cashmere Pashmina - Violet Tulip
- 100% Cashmere Pashmina - Wild Dove Grey
- 55% Cashmere/ 45% Silk Pashmina - Blue Shadow
- 80% Cashmere/ 20% Silk Pashmina - Blue Shadow
- About Chyangra - Pashmina-Boutique.com
- Black Cashmere Pashminas - Pashmina-Boutique.com
- Blue Cashmere Pashminas - Pashmina-Boutique.com
- Cashmere & Silk Pashminas (2) - Pashmina-Boutique.com
- Cashmere & Silk Pashminas - Pashmina-Boutique.com
- Orange Cashmere Pashminas - Pashmina-Boutique.com
- Pashmina Shawls & Cashmere Scarves - Pashmina-Boutique.com
- Yellow Cashmere Pashminas - Pashmina-Boutique.com
Hope it helps just had to add this info..

Laura's answer is great spot on about the age and link building advice.
I will also emphasis a point she made about your statement that you said you're not doing any link building until you page is ranking.
You don't wait for a page to rank to start link building, you start link building to get a page to rank.
Other questions about is it over optimized: Moz's Page grader shows a couple issues.
- Avoid Keyword Stuffing in Document (Ref Rand's Post Here)
- Optimal Use of Keywords in H1 Tags
One other suggestion I have that is not in the page grader, and I have seen this a lot lately, is the way this template is putting the main text way below the header and image elements. You want your unique text to be above these elements showing it is important not tucked away under a ton of images and links. It would be much better to get your internal category images and links section off the main page all together (you already have them in the navigation).
Hope this helps,
Don

Hi there
I would take a look at this KISSmetrics post on eCommerce SEO; it provides a ton of valuable tips and opportunities for you to take advantage of.
I would also look into building a sitemap as it appears you don't have one at the moment. I would then make sure it is uploaded to Google and Bing Webmaster Tools.
By the way, your Privacy Policy, Terms & Conditions, Disclaimer, Payment Methods, and Shipping & Returns pages are noindexed. I would index these pages and build them out a bit more - Google and users take notice of this trust signals for rankings and action, respectively. I suggest you take advantage of it.
I would also work on your on-site SEO to spice your title and content. Some of these titles are a bit too close for comfort to me and almost look spammy.
These are just my opinions! Hope they help! Good luck!

First of all, It's unrealistic to rank well for a highly competitive single keyword like "pashmina" within 3 weeks of launch with no backlinks - even within the first 100 results. Your other pages are doing better because "white pashminas" and "white cashmere pashminas" are not as competitive. Sites rarely jump to the top of the rankings right after launch. There may be a bump at first as Google indexes the site, but then it drops back down.
Secondly, you state that you haven't done any link building, and I assume you mean that you haven't done any spammy link building. However, you still need good backlinks to your site to be competitive. Below are a few resources on link building.

Search engine keyword rank - easiest way to check the keywords that rank across website
What is the best keyword ranking tool you have used? I have used various tools by which I am expected to identify and input the keyword I want to track... However, recently I was introduced to Searchmetrics, which I think automatically pulls in the keywords a website ranks for, without the need for manual input from the SEO (I haven't used this tool yet, so apologies if I am incorrect!). Do any other rank trackers work like this? Thanks, Luke

HELP! How do I get Google to value one page over another (older) page that is ranking?
So I have a tactical question and I need mozzers. I'll use widgets as an example: 1- My company used to sell widgets exclusively and we built thousands of useful, branded unique pages that sell widgets. We have thousands of pages that are ranking for widgets.com/brand-widgets-for-sale. (These pages have been live for almost 2 years) 2- We've shifted our focus to now renting widgets. We have about 100 pages focused on renting the same branded widgets. These pages have unique content and photos and can be found at widgets.com/brand-widgets-for-rent. (These pages have been live for about 2-3 months) The problem is that when someone searches just for the brand name, the "for sale" pages dramatically outrank the "for rent" pages. Instead, I want them to find the "for rent" page. I don't want to redirect traffic from the "for sale" pages because someone might still be interested in buying (although as a company, we are super focused on renting). Solutions? "nofollow" the "for sale" pages with the idea that Google will stop indexing "for sale" and start valuing "for rent" over it? Remove "for sale" from sitemap. Help!!

Is site page structure hurting its chances to rank?
I have a client that sells geotextiles and related products. None of his keywords gets a lot of traffic google as it is a very B2B niche specific industry. For instance, and these numbers are off the top of my head The phrase geotextiles may get 80 searches a month and we have a domain.com/geotextiles.php page Then there are woven and nonwoven geotextiles which may get 30 searches a month We too have a domain.com/nonwoven-geotextiles.php and etc It then goes even further and has things like slit film series non woven /woven and we have subpages from there. To me, I feel as if we need to merge all of these pages to just a singular geotextile page with headers for woven and nonwoven and product info for the sub branches of those two. I feel as if we are basically competing for the same phrase again and again and again for very small amounts of traffic. Thoughts?

Google is ranking the wrong page and I don't know why?
I have an E-Commerce store and to make things easy, let's say I am selling shoes. There is: Category named 'Shoes' and 3 products 'Sport shoes', 'Hiking shoes' and 'Dancing shoes' My problem: For the keyword 'Shoes' Google is showing the product result 'Sport shoes'. This makes no sense from user perspective. (It's like searching for 'iPhone' and getting a result for 'iPhone 4s' instead of a general overview.) Now what are the specifics of my category page (Which I want Google to rank): It has more external links with higher quality It has more internal links It has much higher page authority It has useful text to guide the user for the keyword It is a category instead of a product All this given, I just don't know how I can signal Google that this page makes sense to show in SERPs? Hope you can help with this!

Google Is Indexing The Wrong Page For My Keyword
For a long time (almost 3 mounth) google indexing the wrong page for my main keyword.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Tiedemann_Anselm
The problem is that each time google indexed another page each time for a period of 4-7 days, Sometimes i see the home page, sometimes a category page and sometimes a product page.
It seems though Google has not yet decided what his favorite / better page for this keyword. This is the pages google index: (In most cases you can find the site on the second or third page) Main Page: http://bit.ly/19fOqDh Category Page: http://bit.ly/1ebpiRn Another Category: http://bit.ly/K3MZl4 Product Page: http://bit.ly/1c73B1s All links I get to the website are natural links, therefore in most cases the anchor we got is the website name. In addition I have many links I get from bloggers that asked to do a review on one of my products, I'm very careful about that and so I'm always checking the blogger and their website only if it is something good, I allowed it. also i never ask for a link back (must of the time i receive without asking), and as I said, most of their links are anchor with my website name. Here some example of links that i received from bloggers: http://bit.ly/1hF0pQb http://bit.ly/1a8ogT1 http://bit.ly/1bqqRr8 http://bit.ly/1c5QeC7 http://bit.ly/1gXgzXJ Please Can I get a recommendation what should you do?
Should I try to change the anchor of the link?
Do I need to not allow bloggers to make a review on my products? I'd love to hear what you recommend,
Thanks for the help0 -
Homepage bombed from rankings
I'm working on a site that has historically had issues ranking the homepage. We cleaned up some on page issues and then it went into a high and low pattern - page 4 then page 12 etc (was static around page 9 before), settling at page 6. The link profile was not good and there were a high level of links that should have been no-follow as they were clearly looking paid for - we addressed this along with some other poor links. This effectively dropped ranking down to page 23, but not unexpected considering the very big drop in followed links. Meanwhile we have embarked on a fresh steady link building strategy with nice clean links, varied anchor text coming from varying DA domains, smattered with a few no-follow links - strongly focussing on being as natural as possible. At the Penguin update the homepage has totally disappeared. Frustratingly just after the update (same day) we removed a 301ed old domain from the profile. This was the old company URL which we discovered had a lot of spam linking associated with it. An oversight - there were other 301 domains that were removed some time ago which were totally unrelated to the main site and we were told all other domains were simply bought and redirected to stop hijacking - all but this were. Considering the work we have done would it be good assumption this domain 301 could be the underlying factor? So far organic traffic is steady, in fact a tad up. What would you guys do?

Why is google ranking me higher for pages that aren't optimised for keywords those that are?
I am finding that our homepage and other pages are being ranked higher against keywords that we have optimised other pages for. e.g Keyword: Luxury Towels Google Ranks our homepage http://www.towelsrus.co.uk at 20 for this and the page I am trying to rank for it is nowhere to be seen http://www.towelsrus.co.uk/sport-spa/luxury-towels/catlist_fnct498.htm Why is this and is this why our position for certain keywords fluctuates? How do I remedy this problem?

Why does this 1-page doorway rank #2?
Search on "santa cruz custom cabinets." In my SERPs, I'm seeing exact match santacruzcustomcabinets.com rank #2. This is a 1-page site provided by Yellow Book as part of an ad it sold to this cabinet shop. The site has no other pages, no inbound links, etc. So much for Google saying it's going to turn down the meter on exact match domains because that's all I see this website, if you want to call it that, has going for it. what do you see? Why is it ranked so high? Why is it above the site below it for example? And why doesn't Google lower the boom on Yellow Book for these doorway pages? Thought you'd all find this interesting. Any comments?
