What is personalisation when it comes to local search?
-
Hi Everyone.
This may be a silly question but I was reviewing the 2014 Local Search Ranking Factors article produce by MOZ:
https://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors
I am unsure about the reference to "personalisation" which seems to account for 8.4% of the overall weight. Everything else is pretty clear as there is a quick description and examples for each topic but not for personalisation. Does anyone know what it includes? -
Hi Neil,
Yes, it a way, it can make explaining rank to clients harder because there are no set-in-stone rankings anymore, but in another sense, it frees us all from over-focusing on specific rank and focusing more on the most important metric - conversions.

Thanks miriam. Very useful indeed. This clearly makes things tricky when one wants to optimize for a local business

Hi Neil!
Not a silly question at all. In the past couple of years, what has become a dominant force in local results is typically referred to as the user-as-centroid. What this means is that results vary based on the physical location of the searcher at the moment he makes his search. The affects both desktop and mobile local results, and is especially sensitive on mobile, wherein a searcher at one end of town looking for a pizza is going to see different results than if he drives across town and searches again.
So, the user-as-centroid phenomenon is playing a major role in results being personalized to the searcher, and beyond this, things like past search behavior contribute as well to my results being different than the results my clients see when they do the same searches.

Thanks guys. Makes sense. Very useful indeed

Hi,
Personalisation, generally refers to the personalisation of the search results. So somebody searching for a restaurant in London will receive different results to someone searching in Birmingham.
On top of this, if you are logged into a browser or on your phone, results will continue to differ depending on what you have clicked on before or previously searched for. So for local listings, personalisation tends to be quite an important factor.
Thanks

Hi there
This includes factors like:
Country
Locality
Personal Search History
Social Connections
etc. There's also a great post called SEO in the Personalization Age by Gianluca Fiorelli of Moz that I highly recommend you look into, as well as Rand's Personalization and SEO & Elements of Personalization & How to Perform Better in Personalized Search Whiteboard Fridays. You'll find a ton of great tips and resources through these.
Hope this all helps! Good luck!

Influencing telephone number search
Hey All, I am not sure this is possible but here goes... I've a phone number pulled in from "Google My Business" for the company I work for Caravan Guard Insurance. We have different numbers for specific functions e.g. claims, renewals, quotes. Currently If I type in "caravan guard claims number" into Google Search it shows our general tel number which is clearly pulled in from GMB and the Knowledge Panel. Can this be influenced or have multiple options? For example If I were to search "caravan guard number" it would continue to show our default customer number like present, but if I were to search for "caravan guard claims number" it shows our claims number. Not sure it is possible, but thought I would ask. Cheers all Tim Z6iaU9a

My Evernote Notes showing up on Google Search page ?
I may just be living under a rock here in Reno, but tonight while doing a search (on desktop) for a phone number of a restaurant in Tahoe, Google served me a bunch of my Evernote notes along with my SERPS After the initial "WTFriday" moment, I realized that there was an "Evernote" bar above a series of images of what Google must think are related notes --- for example in a few weeks I am planning to take friends to Bliss & Rubicon - and I had saved the map in Evernote. Next to the map image were two notes related to daughters upcoming swim meet in South Tahoe. I did a similar search and this time a listing for hours at a local pool (near Tahoe) and two other documents came up. Since I live in Reno I thought it was odd to get all those Tahoe activities - but the fact that my Evernote on "Tahoe" things was there caught me off guard. The results were locate on the right hand where local business maps usually are -- the map and business info about the restaurant I was looking for appeared below that. ... while the left hand column features traditionals SERPs. . I am just trying to find out if I am late to the party on this ... or if serving data saved in my Evernote files is new... If anyone else has seen this, let me know. I could just be late to this. ...

Google requires that businesses that serve there customers at their customers' locations must hide its address. However, this causes an notice in Moz Local advising that the Google listing is inconsistent. Is that something to just ignore?
I run a walking tour company that operates from a virtual office. We run tours are set locations outside the office. Because of this, Google requires that we hide our exact location. However, Moz Local is warning us that "incomplete listings can negatively impact your ability to rank well in search engine results". Most listings won't allow you to hide an exact address. Do the search engines understand this and therefore we won't get penalized? Thank you.

Google Local Search
I have a customer who is frustrated that Google local search seems to favor businesses that are closer to the center of the city. He wants to be on the local results area on the SERP with his (keyword + city, state). His website is optimized, Google+ is using the keywords, more reviews than his competition and his MOZ local rating is 88.. It seems the only problem is his business is on the edge of town(same zip code). Google fills the local search area with businesses that are "downtown". Is there a way to overcome this?

How can I manually build local citations for a client?
Note: I am not interested in paying for services to build citations for me. I am managing building a client's citations. On many sites I am asked to create an account and verify my information. I have tried to create accounts using my client's email address and specified password so that they can manage their citations down the road should their NAP change. However, many sites require further verification such as security questions or a phone code. It isn't practical or effective to ask a client to confirm and verify all of these accounts. What is the most effective way to manually build local citations for a client? How can I get around the issue of email and phone verification?
