Referral Spam (trafficmonetize.org, 4webmasters.org, etc)
-
So, we've been plagued with pretty much ALL of our clients from traffic from spammy websites, and even a porn site or two.
Here are a few examples:
- 4webmasters
- Floatingsharebuttons
- Trafficmonetize.org
- 100dollarseo
We are seeing our websites negatively impacted by this.
How could this be happening?

Hi there
There's really no way of telling without a link to your client's site.
Here's a great Q+A on StackExchange where users offer their ideas. Including...
They find new sites by:
- Crawling and looking for signatures of known software. Usually this is a snippet of text like a copyright or a meta tag but it could be any consistent identifier. This usually applies to blog and forum software.
- Manual inclusion. Human beings, whose labor is cheap in many parts of the world, look for known software or forms that are easily exploitable and add them to a database. This usually applies to custom registration and contact forms.
- They buy lists. Just like email addresses are sold by spammers, known vulnerable or preferred target site lists are sold as well.
So, it really could be a lot of things, but I wouldn't jump to inclusions. Just refer the resources above and start doing what you can!
Hope this helps a bit - good luck!

We had a client of ours get blacklisted because of porn links and this referral traffic. Could it have been done by a disgruntled employee? How do these things start?

I would recommend following Carlos Escalera comment on referral filters. I followed his process about a month back when I noticed ever increasing volumes of referral spam hitting our site.
His recent comment found here will give you an overview or you can follow the entire process on this article.
It worked a treat for me utilising both .htaccess to restrict spam crawlers and GA filters to clean up my traffic data.

Hi there
This sometimes just happens. Here are a couple of resources to help you clear this up in GA reporting and also how to block these spam bots altogether:

Should you disavow backlinks even if your site spam score is 1%?
With a site spam score of 1% as indicated by Moz, is it worth the effort or necessary to disavow backlinks in Google? Even at just 1%, could those spammy links still hurt a site's Google search rankings, even in the slightest of ways? As it relates to disavowing backlinks, everything I read about is only related to sites with high spam scores. But what about sites with low spam scores? I'm interested in best practices for dealing with spammy links, regardless of one's site spam score. Thank you

Is a rootserver that has previously been used for porn and spam a problem for SEO?
As we found out via Alexa we are hosting our website on a server that has been used under the same IP heavily mostly for pornsites. Will this become a problem for our webproject? By the way: We are not in the porn-sector. We are an NGO with an alternative social media project for a better world. Thanks for your help.

Site hacked and now being spammed and rankings dropping
I have a client's site that was hacked in December and a whole bunch of spam pages were created. We've since removed those pages and they serve a 404 error now. But I pick up a new link almost every day from a another spammy site linking back to the pages that were created. I'm updating the Disavow as I see the new links reported in ahrefs but what else can I do to stop these buggers and how can I recover rankings other than building links and creating content

Schema.org mark up to avoid duplicate issue?
Hey there, I was wondering, does product's mark-up help to avoid penalization due to duplicate content? Here is the example: one of my client doesn't supply unique content. Because the major part of the content is technical description of products made by a couple of manufactures, do you think it will help me to link the official manufacturer webpage in a schena.org product mark-up? I know this is the right procedure to add mark-ups, but as on the pages of my client an outbound-link will show up, so I want to tell him this will be the only way to have that duplicate content without incurring in penalisation. I'd like to give him more than one solution, as I'm pretty sure it will never supply us with unique content. Thanks Pierpaolo

How do I get rid of my errors for Schema.org?
I put the Schema.org data on my item pages and it works great. However, when an item closes it removes the price. It showed an empty price and that causes an error. The site is now programmed to where if an item closes it removes the price component. This was done about 2 weeks ago and it is still showing a lot of errors. Any ideas?

If I own a .com url and also have the same url with .net, .info, .org, will I want to point them to the .com IP address?
I have a domain, for example, mydomain.com and I purchased mydomain.net, mydomain.info, and mydomain.org. Should I point the host @ to the IP where the .com is hosted in wpengine? I am not doing anything with the .org, .info, .net domains. I simply purchased them to prevent competitors from buying the domains.

Schema.org Organization Logo markup
Hi Guys, Does anyone have an example of a site using schema.org Organization logo markup (as per: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au/2013/05/using-schemaorg-markup-for-organization.html), with the logo appearing in Google SERPs? One of the designers is pressing me ofr an example. I've found plenty of brands getting their logo in the SERPs knoweldge base results, but they have all been using G+ verified company profiles, or other methods (Googs simply selecting a best fit?) to achieve it. Thx!

Guest Posting Good or Too Spammed in 2013
Hi, Some of the Gurus and Associates have indicated that guest posting is the "Directories of today." There are some posts from last year about this in the Q&A, but what is the most recent thought if guest posting on quality sites should be avoided? Thanks.
