Figuring out why sales drop significantly from one day to another
-
Hi all,
We're running an eCommerce site and are using Moz to track our organic results i primarily we are using the Rank tracker and On page analysis tools.
One strange issue that we experience on our website is sales dropping from one day to the next unexplainably (to us anyway). For example, one day (could be any day of the week or weekend) we'll make £1,000 of sales, the next £200 - the following might be back up to £1,000.
I've tried looking for patterns in traffic, but oddly even on the days when we have poor sales we still tend to have almost as much traffic.
We also use adwords, which account for about 50% of sales - on some of the poor days our spend on adwords is down, on others it's not. If the spend is down I could make a fair assumption that our competitors are playing around with their bids.
I'm interesting in trying to determine why we have such irregular sales patterns. If they dropped 10/20% I could quite easily put it down to any number of factors - even the weather for example, however drops of 80/90% seem strange.
I don't really know where to look for the answers - my first thought was that on the poor days I should check whether our organic rankings had dropped significantly overnight - but the Moz Rank Tracker only updates once per week, so perhaps there is an alternative way someone could suggest?
I'd be really interested to hear from any of you that might have been through similar struggles, or, have some ideas that might help us get to the bottom of the fluctuation in sales.
Thanks in advance for your time.
Kind regards,
Al -
Hi Al!
Just a note on alternate tools to check rankings—you can actually get your rankings whenever you'd like using the Rank Tracker Research tool in Moz Pro.

Hi all,
Thanks greatly for your input.Unfortunately the drops seem to have no patterns i.e.:
- It's not a consistent day of the week
- It can happen to Organic, PPC or both
- It can be multiple products
One thing we do notice is that on the days we sell less (in terms of overall value), many of the sales are a lot smaller in value. My thoughts on this were that perhaps we were further down the rankings (either ppc or serps) and by the time the consumer reaches our site they have been through many of our competitors and found that they are more expensive or dont deal with small orders (which is quite true) and therefore they are happy to place their small order with us - does this make any sense?
Thanks again
Al

When my sales volume was about the same as yours there was a lot of day-to-day volatility. One big sale could up the daily total. A few nice sales could up the daily total. A lack of a big sale or a few nice sales would make the daily total puny.
As your sales volume grows volatility will decline from your high days being 5x the volume of your low days. Once you get up to £2000 to £3000 your daily volatility will probably drop to about 3x between your high days and low days. Your sales will never be steady because you have day-of-the-week, season-of-the-year, and surprise spikes and dips driven by outside factors. You will still have great days to celebrate and slow days that allow your staff to work on other ways to advance your business.
-
1. Do the losses correspond with particular days of the week?
2. Are any of your sales recurring?
3. Are there similar dips in the # of sales, not just the value of sales?
4. Is there a pattern in the source of lost sales (ie: does organic sales drop or just ppc, or all of the,?) -
Hi Al,
There are so many possibilities for this, so I will run through a few for you to check / think about.
- Have a look at Positionly for daily SERP updates
- Is it a particular set of products where sales drop, or across the board?
- Add heat mapping to your pages (Crazy Egg) to see how users are interacting with your pages.
- How often are you pages / products updated?
- Have you checked Google Analytics to look for issues?
- Do you integrate with Google Shopping?
- Is most of your traffic PPC or organic?

Ranking Drops
Hi I'm seeing a few category pages drop out of Google for certain keywords but not others, I'm trying to work out why & see if this correlates to a drop in conversion Organic Traffic isnt down, but conversion is so I'm trying to identify where its coming from - a lot has come from the homepage, but we have also lost a lot of positions across the site. has anyone noticed any google updates in Jan? Example of the page https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/shelving-racking Keywords lost in top 10 UK Google: <colgroup><col width="199"></colgroup>

Customer journey / customer drop off
Hi All, I would like to understand how visitors navigate through my site and find out where the main drop out areas are (i.e. what pages / sections of the site do users leave on). I will then be segmenting by mobile, tablet, new visitor, returning etc. to see how the various subsets of users behave. To do this I generally do the following: Identify main sections of the (ecomm) site: homepage, category pages, product pages, cart, checkout 1, checkout 2, checkout x, payment confirmation. For each section above I either use a segment to isolate that section of the site, either by regex or a simple page selector and apply to the Audience >> Overview report and record the resulting session count. OR I filter the Behaviour >> Site Content >> All Pages report to isolate the various site sections and record unique pageviews. I then plot these figures horizontally under a heading for each section of the site representing a flow between the pages of the site with a calculation showing the difference between each section of the site which represents user drop off. Hope that makes sense. What I am interested to know is, do you have any better suggestions to the process laid about above. Do you see any issues with this process?

Example scenario: /landing-page -> /product-3 -> Lead TIA!

Any Reports on Conversion Rate Drops in 2014?
I'm looking for some reports about conversion rate changes over the past year as well as any trends you may have noticed about ecommerce conversion rates because we are seeing something quite odd. We are seeing a large drop in overall conversion rates on some sites I manage this year despite seeing significant revenue growth. When I looked through the stats I found something interesting. Our conversion rates have actually increased on each of the three device types (desktop, tablet and mobile) but because there is a huge surge in visits from mobile devices (the device with the lowest conversion rates) and a large decline in vistis from our top convertor (desktop) our overall conversion rates are down. This is especially troubling to me because my bonus was based on increasing conversion rates and I could use some help from you to see if others in the industry are facing this issue or not. Thanks

Multiple Thank You pages with one Contact form - PPC
Hi everyone,
Conversion Rate Optimization | | Carla_Dawson
I am running a PPC (Google Adwords Campaign) and it is pretty big. I have about 25 landing pages each with a Contact Form. I need the contact form to go to a unique thank you page for each landing page to measure conversions via Google Adwords. In other words I need the contact form on submission to redirect to a specific and unique thank you page that I can define. The contact form needs to be the same for all landing pages to avoid having to produce 25 landing pages. I am ok with producing 25 Example
http://www.maindomain.com/landing-page-1 redirects tohttp://www.maindomain.com/thank-you-1 http://www.maindomain.com/landing-page-2 redirects tohttp://www.maindomain.com/thank-you-2 http://www.maindomain.com/landing-page-3 redirects tohttp://www.maindomain.com/thank-you-3 Can someone help me with this?
Thanks https://wordpress.org/plugins/contact-form-7/0 -
One Domain or Four?
Hi, We are coming to a bit of a crossroads at our company. Our current website www.revolutioninc.co.uk is ranking half decently in some of our main keywords and is moving in the correct direction. However. There is talk of us now producing a different website for each of our services Web Design, Graphic Design, Marketing and Print. I think I see the benefits of doing 4 seperately in terms of bounce rate probably improving, being able to produce a more concentrated amount of content per site, etc. We have a meeting on it tomorrow and I do have a good few key points to discuss regarding the advantages. Initially however, does anybody here have an opinion of the potential pitfalls/benefits of following this route. I'm thinking also in regards to the direction google is heading. Any opinion is appreciated, good or bad, as I want to put as informed decision as possible across.

14,000+ links a to one site - is this a problem?
First, thanks to those who have helped me before. Second, according to Google Webmaster there are about 14,765 external links to my site. According to Open Site Explorer I have 22. So a couple of questions: 1. Why such a discrepancy? 2. Of the 14,765 links shown in Google Webmaster 14,665 are all from one place and all link to my home page. The site is interiordesignproductfinder.com. In August of this year I bought a sponsorship there. There are several of these sponsors so which show up on a rotating basis. Will having 14,765 links all of a sudden showing up be grounds for some type of a Google downgrade? Why are there 14, 765 links instead of just one. Is a new link created every time our sponsorship rotates to the page? Another thing, in the past couple of months our conversions have dropped significantly. we average about 180 visits a day with a 50% bounce rate. Is there anything obvious thatt might have caused this drop? Thanks for any insights. Don www.uniquegiftsanddecor.com
