Seeking guidance setting up hreflang en-gb for international english website and en-us for North American site
-
Our website is configured like so:
MyCompany.com Websites
- /en-gb - International English
- /fr-fr
- /zh-hans
- /m/en-us - North American site - completely different structure
The first three bullets share a Drupal instance where the North American site uses a different PHP framework and has it's own unique look and structure.
Currently none of the websites have hreflang tags which means that sometimes when searching in the US the en-gb results creep in. I want to turn on hreflang tags for the international english website (en-gb) but my fear is that Google may not return the en-gb results to English speaking users if they are not in the UK. We want these results to appear for anyone who is not in the US who speaks English.
Just a note, Canada is not included in this since they'll be added to the North American site soon and will have their own hreflang tags.

Can I have multiple defaults for a single URL when not using x-default?
Could you explain better?
Hreflang is alternate annotation... so - for instance - in the en-US home page you must indicate the alternative home pages for en (meant for global use of the en-GB, british version of your site), fr-FR (or fr only), en-CA and zh-hans, and vice versa in all the pages.
If you mean if the x-default can be different on a URL by URL situation - for instance if you want to set up a british product page as default for all users not targeted with specific geotargeting version of the same product page - in theory that is possible, because the hreflang is URL specific and not domain wide.
Said that, you should always state that the british version is meant for all English speaking users apart the geotargeted one (hreflang="en").
The xdefault will tell Google to show the british version URL to all the users from countries and languages not specifically geotargeted (eg.: Spanish speaking users from Spain).

Thank you for the detailed response Danial. Our US website only does business in the Americas (Canada, US, Latin America) which is the reason that setting it as the International site does not make sense to us.
Taking the feedback in it seems that I could get by with the following. Please correct me as needed.
America's Website: www.website.com/en-us
- hreflang US: en-us
- hreflang Canada: en-ca
- Can I have multiple defaults for a single URL when not using x-default?International English Website: www.website.com/en-gb
- hreflang: enFrench Website: www.website.com/fr-fr
- hreflang: fr-fr or frChinese Website: www.website.com/zh-hans
- hreflang: zh-hans -
If you want en-gb to be your standard English language subfolder of the site, I would just use the first part (language) of the href lang: en. The gb part is about country targeting which is actually an optional element. So that way US traffic will go to en-us, the rest will go to your en-gb subfolder.
I would say though that maybe US English is more "international standard" than British English.
Additionally, if the home page of your domain is a country selector (see http://www.emirates.com/index.aspx for an example) then it's a good idea to use X-default. So if you want ALL visitors to first go to your home page, then have them select the country and language which is most appropriate for them, you can use . This lets Google and Yandex know that regardless of country or language, all visitors should go to that home page first. There's more about x-default here: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.ae/2013/04/x-default-hreflang-for-international-pages.html
Hope that helps

Thanks Tom. Two of these articles I have stumbled upon in my research of hreflang tags and they are filled with very helpful information.
After breezing through the articles rather quickly it seems that if I add the en-us hreflang tags AND the en-gb tags, the following is likely and somewhat obvious to occur:
- US Searches
- EN-US results should get priority followed by EN-GB - UK Searches
- EN-GB results should get priority followed by EN-US - For search outside of both the US and UK Google will revert to showing the most relevant result without bias to the hreflang tag.
My conclusion is that for EN-GB maybe I should not set hreflang so since we do not necessarily want the results to favor the UK - we want these results to populate searches for everywhere except the US.
Thoughts and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there
I'd highly recommend going through Aleyda Solis' international SEO posts here on the Moz blog. They can teach how to prepare for international SEO, how to approach site structure and how to generate relevant code and hreflang tags.
Here is her international SEO checklist
Here is her Hreflang blog post and generator tool
And 40 tools to help advance your international SEO
They're great reading and nothing that I'd be able to do add to, so I hope this helps!

Website server errors
I launched a new website at www.cheaptubes.com and had recovered my search engine rankings as well after penguin & panda devestation. I'm was continuing to improve the site Sept 26th by adding caching of images and W3 cache but moz analytics is now saying I went from 288 medium issues to over 600 and i see the warning "45% of site pages served 302 redirects during the last crawl". I'm not sure how to fix this? I'm on WP using Yoast SEO so all the 301's I did are 301's not 302's. I do have SSL, could it be Http vs Https? I've asked this question before and two very nice people replied with suggestions which I tried to implement but couldn't, i got the WP white screen of death several times. They suggested the code below. Does anyone know how to implement this code or some other way to reduce the errors I'm getting? I've asked this at stackoverflow with no responses. "you have a lot of http & https issues so you should fix these with a bit of .htaccess code, as below. RewriteEngine On
On-Page Optimization | | cheaptubes
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^.*$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L] You also have some non-www to www issues. You can fix these in .htaccess at the same time... RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L] You should find this fixes a lot of your issues. Also check in your Wordpress general settings that the site is set to www.cheaptubes.com for both instances." When I tried to do as they suggested it gave me an internal server error. Please see the code below from .htaccess and the server error. I took it out for now. BEGIN WordPress <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule ^.$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www. RewriteRule ^(.)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]</ifmodule> END WordPress Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@cheaptubes.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.0 -

How best to deal with internal duplicate content
hi having an issue with a client site and internal duplicate content. The client has a custom cms and when they post new content it can appear, in full, at two different urls on the site. Short of getting the client to move cms, which they won't do, I am trying to find an easy fix that they could do themselves. ideally they would add a canonical on one of the versions but the cms does allow them to view posts in html view, also would be a lot if messing about wth posting the page and then going back to the cms and adding the tag. the cms is unable to auto generate this either. The content editors are copywriters not programmers. Would there be a solution using wmt for this? They have the skill level to be able to add a url in wmt so im thinking that a stop gap solution could be to noindex one of the versions using the option in webmaster tools. Ongoing we will consult developers about modifying the cms but budgets are limited so looking for a cheap and quick solution to help until the new year. anyone know of a way other than wmt to block Google from seeing duplicate content. We can block Google from folders because only a small percentage of the content in the folder would be internally duplicate. would be very grateful for any suggestions anyone could offer. thanks.

Internal linking question
I have a Q&A site which I am struggling to get ranking well in Google. I had a few questions 1. Should I be doing some internal linking and if so how is it best to do this? Should I go back into users questions and change certain keywords to links if applicable? 2. Should I be nofollowing the index pages ie /p1 /p2 of discussions? 3. If anyone has chance to look at the site and let me know if there is anything else I am doing wrong I would be really grateful. Thanks

Moving content from one site to another
I have a couple established, content rich sites with some content that I would like to move over to a new site. My question is what steps I need to take to ensure that neither my older sites nor newer sites are penalized for duplicate content. The purpose for moving the content is to add some depth to the new site for users, as well as possibly optimize it all for SEO. There is a fair amount of content involved, about 50 posts and pages per site, so I'd like to know if the potential problem with duplicate content might be serious enough that I should think twice. What do you recommend?

Drop in Internal Links to Root
This morning I noticed in Google Webmaster Tools that my internal links to my root domain (Home Page), dropped from 428,000 to 58,000. It appears that this could be my header or footer links back to the home page that Google is not showing any more. My programmers claim they have not made any changes over the last 30 days. My rankings and traffic are normal. Any cause for concern?

Suggestions on plans to optimize my site? (NOOB)
I am currently trying to plan how to optimize my site based on keywords. I read and I understand site architecture and usability http://www.seomoz.org/blog/site-architecture-for-seo , but I am still somewhat confused about how to target each keyword per page or when http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/splitting-keyword-targeted-.gif Let me give you an example. We build databases for SME's using 3 different technologies. One of them is MS Access. Based on PPC campaigns and keyword research some of the possible keywords might be ms access programmer ms access consultants access database experts According to the link provided, should these be separate pages? I feel if they were, our site nativigation would be cluttered and clients would not be benefiting from them at all. It might even lead to some redundant data which I believe is bad right? My feeling is to make one page and target one keyword, but I'm not sure. For example, see one of our top ranking competitors http://www.justgetproductive.com/content/access-programmer/index.php Please, look at the footer? Is that actually how I should structure my links? I hope the answer is NO! Then again, if I do just have one page targeting one keyword, what do I do about the others? Do I just try to use blog posts/articles addressing those keywords? Do I not target them at all? Thanks for any advice, please keep in mind I am just getting started. My approach is to create a plan to outline everything before I put a lot of time into it.

How deep should I go with a directory site?
I am creating a new site which has a directory component. Based on what I have ready I am inclined to keep the site architecture as flat as possible. However, the natural layout that I have come up with in my head has the directory listings 5 or 6 pages deep in the site structure. I saw in another post that someone in a similar situation was suggesting that going deep like this is fine so long as there are many internal links to the deeper pages to indicate that they are important. Should I make a conscious effort to make the site architecture as flat as possible? Are there any specific guides/resources that address this particular issue that I should be aware of? Thanks!
