New Mozscape index released! Learn just what's been going on.

I'm very, very pleased to announce that the latest Mozscape index has been released five days ahead of schedule, and it's back up to the quality you expect from Moz!
It's no secret that we've struggled this year with our index. I can't overstate how much we appreciate everyone sticking with us—we know how hard this has been. The good news—well, apart from the early release—is that we've worked out the issue, and we expect to finally be back on track moving forward.
Director of Engineering Martin York has shared a post to the Moz blog explaining just what's been going so wrong, and outlining our plan for the future. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for being such an incredible community.
As for the folks who are seeing Domain Authority and Page Authority drops since the index release, please see Rand's recent post for more.

Yes. Domain Authority is recalculated with each new index. I'll quote Rand, from a comment on the blog post:
"Yeah - almost certainly related to this update, and very possibly to the quantity of domains we were previously crawling and counting from .cn and .pl. Going forward, PA/DA should keep getting slightly more accurate."

Very possibly. Domain Authority is calculated using the index, and updates along with it. If the new index indicates that a site's Domain Authority has changed, then it will update.
EDIT: Rereading this, I realize it's kind of misleading. Shifts in the index can affect Domain Authority whether or not anything has changed in the site's link profile. Because Domain Authority is always on a 1-100 scale, shifts in the size and composition of the index can essentially change the definition on a given score.
With this in mind, we generally recommend using DA to benchmark against competitors rather than as an absolute measure of link profile quality. If your DA has dropped but so have DAs across your industry, then you're actually in the same relative position. Does that make sense?

A tale of two pages - one ranks great and one doesn't - but they are set up the same way
Hi everyone, First time poster 🙂 I will keep it simple - we have two pages on our website that are set up in the same way (or so we think) but achieve vastly different search engine rankings. We have spent weeks trying to figure out why this should be the case, but to no avail. Perhaps you guys can do a little diagnosis and see what we are missing: for search term: used machine tools www.machinetoolsonline.co.za/buy-used-machine-tools Is working well for us. for search term: new machine tools www.machinetoolsonline.co.za/buy-new-machine-tools is a disaster 😞 In fact, Google ranks our home page which is optimised for other terms, higher. New Website & DA Score
We are preparing to build a new website for a branch of our company. According to Neil Patel (whom I highly respect) our DA should come in around 30 (categorizing us as a startup, see chart below). So I ask: Why do our current sites DA Score below 30? (20 & 29 respectively) Our sites were redesigned in 2013 and are responsive, pass the Google Mobile Friendly test and I've improved load speed by over 25% by compressing images. I have used Moz as guidance for 10 months on both 7 + yo sites, HP.com is 14 yo, our pages score in the high 90's and I have disavowed bad backlinks for 6 months (now only every other month). I thought we would be in or close to the 50 range by 2017 after a solid year of improvements, but I don't see that happening. Our scores go up a point or two, then back down, we have floundered 2 points either way for 10 months. Most important question: What do I do now to raise our DA? Lastly, my plan is to take all the lessons learned from the past years and apply it to the new site, measure the success and then redesign the other two sites in accordance to the new model. What's my best strategy for Duplicate Content if only www pages are indexed?
The MOZ crawl report for my site shows duplicate content with both www and non-www pages on the site. (Only the www are indexed by Google, however.) Do I still need to use a 301 redirect - even if the non-www are not indexed? Is rel=canonical less preferable, as usual? Facts: the site is built using asp.net the homepage has multiple versions which use 'meta refresh' tags to point to 'default.asp'. most links already point to www Current Strategy: set the preferred domain to 'www' in Google's Webmaster Tools. set the Wordpress blog (which sits in a /blog subdirectory) with rel="canonical" to point to the www version. Ask programmer to add 301 redirects from the non-www pages to the www pages. Ask programmer to use 301 redirects as opposed to meta refresh tags & point all homepage versions to www.site.org. Does this strategy make the most sense? (Especially considering the non-indexed but existent non-www pages.) Thanks!!

Branded Keywords: Should I Monitor My Products' Names?
I am setting up my keywords' tags and brand rules. Is there any reason not to consider my products' names as "branded keywords". For instance, if my brand is HealthNut and I have products (that people talk about by name), such as GreenGiant Juice, should I create a brand rule for "GreenGiant Juice"? Granted, most of the time, customers will be searching for "HealthNut GreenGiant Juice", but there must be at least a minority who would search directly for the product itself without using the brand name. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

To all the Mozzers reading this, I joined SEOMoz in a panic when we were seeing the first hints of an impending ranking crisis for our company website in October, 2012. We tanked in late December for our most important keywords. Simply GONE. Holy C---! It was devastating to say the least. Thankfully, we have a lot of work due to current clients and referrals, but the phone got quiet. That's a deadly sound.15 years of comfort zone gone. I still don't know precisely why it happened, it may have been a number of factors. But I've learned a huge amount through this crisis and can honestly say that I'm glad it happened. How weird is that? But what other fire under my butt would have gained me so much curiosity, fascination, engagement and excitement with deepening my scant knowledge? A week ago, we got our first report showing us that we have now gotten back our positions on page 1 for the 10 keywords that matter. It's continuing to improve according to today's report. So now that I've gotten somewhere- and I am well aware that it may not stick and there is still more to do -it's time to shout out a great big "Thank You". Truly, I don't think I could have survived this situation without SEOMoz and all you wonderful Mozers answering my frantic questions and lending your expertise and support to my situation. It wasn't only my own questions and the responses to those that helped me through this. I have been essentially addicted to reading a vast majority of all the posted questions because it's so dang interesting. So I've been learning bucketfuls from other people's questions and responses. My own personal SEOMoz education. It's only just begun. What an incredible culture and community we have here. I feel I can say "we" now because I am beginning to feel a part of it. And I'm not going anywhere anytime soon. I love this place. Thank you!

New on SEO Moz and need help regarding panda recover.
Hello Dear Members, I am a new member to not only seomoz but to the SEO World as well. I was learning and implementing SEO from the last 5,6 months and got my website on Google.com page 1. I was quite happy with all the results. I recently got adsense approved on my site and was quite happy with the earnings as well. Unfortunately the most recent Panda update has effected most of my SEO efforts I was doing from the last 5,6 months. My rankings are effected a lot and same with my earnings from adsense. My rankings are effected in this manner. A couple of keywords that were in top 3 spots (1st page Google.com) are now at 7,8 (1st page Google.com) position. There are 3,4 pages that were previously on 5,6 spot (1st page Google.com) are now on 15, 16 spot (2nd page Google.com). Now I want to ask what tools from seomoz can help me to regain my lost positions in Google? Secondly what type of strategy (backlinks) can help me to regain the lost rankings? Best Regards Sam
