How do you rank a site in a very competitive market?
-
Do you focus on article submission, social media backlinks or what?

Hi Shauna!
I agree with everyone here, and I'd encourage you to specifically not focus on the practices you've mentioned. I'd also like to suggest two specific resources for you—Cyrus Shepard's "How to Rank" post and ebook, and our Beginner's Guide to Link Building.
-
Building links is important for SEO but if you're just starting out on a fresh site, I don't suggest starting there. Spend the time improving the website's onsite factors and overall user experience so it's a place users want to go.
It can be difficult to build legitimate backlinks if your site is very thin on content and hard to use because, quite simply, it doesn't look trustworthy.
We've had great success in competitive industries by starting almost exclusively with onsite elements then steadily shifting the focus toward building genuine links. Below are just some of the more important elements we work on in the early days, regardless of industry. These are in no particular order:
- Page titles
- Meta descriptions
- Headings
- Nav structure and layout
- URL structure
- Landing page content (my recommendation is 1500+ words of uniquely valuable content per landing page though this figure is anecdotal - better to have 1000 words of good content than to pad it out with rubbish for the sake of an arbitrary word count)
- Site speed
- Call to action
- Overall user experience - how easy is it for users to satisfy their intent on your site?
There are certainly plenty more things to consider which Moz and Backlinko cover quite well. The important thing to remember here is that you're not jumping through arbitrary hoops to "improve rankings", you're building a trustworthy, more helpful website for users. The early ranking improvements are really just a side-benefit in the short term.
The concept of article submissions is thankfully quite dead these days. There are some instances where it makes sense but very rarely. Just like everything else in SEO, if done with the right intent (providing a helpful resource, not just building a backlink) then it can be done with reasonable success but there are better ways to spend your time.
Also, backlinks from social media are quite different to a link from another website. These "social mentions" are important because while they may or may not directly improve your rankings, they do work to build a stronger image for your brand; "146,000 people follow this brand on Facebook, they're obviously quite a strong company!".
I hope at least some of this proves helpful! Don't forget to do some thorough competitor analysis to see what your competition is up to as well. You'll never beat someone by copying them but their tactics might spark some great ideas.

As you can see from Egol's response, you need to take a big picture approach to optimization. There aren't any quick fixes anymore, especially in competitive markets.
Rather than focusing on article submissions or social media backlinks (which sound like you're emphasizing link growth first), take a step back and come up with a strategy that's going to work long-term for your website, industry and specific target market. There are a ton of good resources on the site to help you do that. This query surfaces helpful Q&A and articles from the last year alone. I suggest you start there.
Then, come back here with more questions. The more specific you can be, the better the answers you'll get. There are a lot of people who are willing to share their lessons learned and past experiences here.
Good luck!

How do you rank a site in a very competitive market?
-
Spend time learning about the market, its products, their uses, their problems, their customers, maintain this effort as long as you are working this industry.
-
Concurrently, be working on a website that shares all that you are learning about the products, their uses, the problems that they can solve and the problems that come with them. Share what people want to know, share what they need to know but don't know that they need know.
-
Plan to be on this journey for at least several years.

Franchise-Like Duplicate Sites
I know that ideally businesses that operate as franchises should have 1 site with separate location pages. However, I have a slightly different issue. Each location is owned by a different parent company, and named accordingly. For example, there is "Location by XYZ Company" and "Location by ABC Company." In addition, each location, while carrying similar products, does not carry the same exact products and brands. So my question is how would you go about writing the content for each of these sites, keeping the same tone but avoiding duplicate content?

How do I stop someone from hijacking my site?
I had lost a lot of search engine rankings & it almost put me out of business. I worked a lot on the site in April and in May my sales rebounded 37%+ almost back to where they typically are. I have blamed Panda and saw another Panda update in May and my traffic is declining again. Today I happened to decide to check what pages were being indexed and I also noticed that when I published an update this morning it said the page "<cite class="_Zd">www.cheaptubes.com/index2.asp</cite>" exists on the destination server but not in current site and it asked if I wanted to delete it. I said no at the time but am going to delete it right after this question. I went to google & put "site:cheaptubes.com" into the search. My website has about 50 pages but google has "About 2,160 results" @ 10X per page. The first four pages are mostly my pages but I noticed even on the first page, 3rd result was for Nike shoes and it isn't my site. Someone has hacked my site and put up over 21,000 pages! That must be the real reason behind my website problems, right? How do I stop this from happening again? Is this having the negative effect that I fear it is?

What are the effects of posting on a blog site using copied content from your site if you source the site on the blog site?
I have noticed that some of my pages from my site are posted to different blog sites and directory submissions they are word for word what is on my site but at the bottom of the page it does list my site as the source and there are links in the text back to my site. Is this going to negatively effect my rankings or is it ok since my site is sourced in the article?

New sister site VS site redesign and dangers of SEO dilution??
Hi I’ve got a site that is ranking #2 in my area for my chosen keyword but the site is in need of an expansion and overhaul its only one page at the moment and to rank for more keywords its need to be expanded. Or another option is I do own another domain and I was thinking of maybe instead of overhauling the new site launching that as a sister company aimed more at the corporate market, as my first site is a bit more alternative in domain name and content. The thing is i'm not sure how this will affect my SEO they will be on the same CBlock and be offering similar services.

Will our two retail sites get hit with duplicate content?
Our retail site just rolled out a second online store. The URL is new and it is showing some of the same products from the same vendors (probably about 40% of the fist store is in the second store). Down the road, we will remove the products from the first site, however, we are keeping it for now. The products show up on both sites, with the same images, and the same descriptions and almost the same URL query string. Are we going to get hit with any penalties due to duplicate content?

How to Handle SEO for Daily and Weekly Market Updates
I have a market news and education site focused on the bond market. Each day we have an end of day market wrapup piece. We also have several weekly pieces as well as pieces that come out once a month. My question is how should I handle these from an SEO standpoint? When someone searches for "bond market update" for example I want my latest piece to show up in the results. Similarly when someone searches for "savings bond interest rate forecast" I would also like the report for that month to be the one that they find. Here are two examples of what I am talking about: http://www.learnbonds.com/us-savings-bond-forecast-3272012/ and http://www.learnbonds.com/bond-market-recap-41712/ Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks Dave

Google still caching old site
Hi all, We just acquired a new domain that was being squatted on by a reseller for a very long time and on the 5th June migrated our site over to it, replacing their advertising holding page. The domain is http://primate.co.uk It's been a week now though and Google hasn't seemed to have updated it's cache. Doing a search for 'primate.co.uk' in Google lists the site but with the old holding page description. Web master tools doesn't report any errors or issues with the site. Does anyone know how we can get Google to index the domain and update it's cache? Cheers, Gordon

How important is linking out to relevant, authoritative sites?
As I write blog articles for my site I often come across a situation where I'm quoting something from another site, or using a piece of data from that other site to make a point. I know it's nice and courteous to link to the source when I do this but from a pure SEO point of view, does it matter? Is there any benefit to linking from my site to other sites that are related and authoritative on the subject I'm discussing? I know I'll bleed off a little link juice to that external site that would otherwise go towards my internal links on the same page, but are there other benefits to linking out to known good sites? Is that any kind of signal to Google that I'm playing in a good neighborhood?
