How would a redesign, content update and URL change affect ranking?
-
Hi guys,
I have a question that I suspect there is no simple true or false answer to, but perhaps someone has done the same thing as we're pondering wether or not to do?
We're taking over an existing site that ranks very well on all the important keywords and is obviously very well liked by Google. The site is today hosted on a sub-domain (xxx.domain.com). When taking over, we'll have to redesign the site and recreate most of the content on the site (unique). The site structure, URLs, incoming links etc. will remain exactly the same.
Since we are recreating the site, we also have the opportunity to move the site off the sub-domain and on to the main domain (domain.com/xxx - 85/100 Moz rank) and do a 301 Permanent Redirect on all old URLs. Our long-time experience is that content on the main domain, ranks way better than the sub-domain. The big question is wether or not Google will punish us for both changing the content and the location of the site at the same time?
Cheers!

When I worked on the rebrand from SEOmoz.org to Moz.com, we faced exactly this situation. You can watch my Mozinar about it here https://moz.com/webinars/domain-migrations-lessons-from-the-moz-transition. In brief:
- You should expect to see a temporary dip in traffic and rankings, but it's totally reversible.
- Do as much link reclamation (reaching out to sites that link to you and asking them to update their links) as you can.
- Plan for a concerted link building effort to the new site to coincide with launch.
- Go page-to-page with redirects wherever possible.
- Use the Change Address function in Search Console.
- Make sure that pages that rank for core terms now redirect to pages that target those same terms.
I've also noticed that Google has been slower than usual at indexing new pages lately, sometimes taking upwards of a week, so keep that in mind as you check for your new site being indexed.
Good luck!

Thanks for the answer - its more or less in line with what I've thought.
We're redesigning, cleaning and speeding up the site, so I think we're covered UX wise. The general structure of the site, the backlink profile or URLs are not changing. Since we do not own the current content on the site, we will have to rewrite the content. The content will be the same theme, same keywords and phrases, but not identical content.
What I believe we will do is to change this in two stages, first change the design and update content. Then wait and see what happens with the rankings over the next few months. If we're keeping the same ranking, we will then move from sub-domain to main domain.
Thanks again for the answer!

Personal experience - redirecting from subdomain to main domain shouldn't have a big impact (maybe some temporary fluctuations).
Changing the design can have a huge impact. We did a relaunch recently where both url / ux where changed and we had a massive drop of traffic - even when all url's where properly redirected. We did notice however pageviews/visit go down & bounce rate increase which indicated that our visitors had issues with the new (responsive) design. It took us about 4/5 months to return to previous traffic levels - but we still haven't recovered some of our top positions for very competitive keywords.Dirk

Good post Dmitrii. This recent article on YouMoz covers off 301 redirects nicely...

Hope it helps

Hi there.
Well, here is a thing. If you look at what google considers when deciding whether or not page should be ranking, in a nutshell, it would be backlink profile, content and user data (read user experience).
So, when considering redesign and structure change for a website, those are the things you should be looking at. Therefore, estimate how much each of those parts of the website would change. Typically, redesign with UX in mind will help you dramatically, however, changing the content (if you're actually talking about changing it, not editing) can lead to really bad results. So, make sure that content is somewhat the same or at least is targeting the same keyphrases.
The same thing about moving from subdomain. Even though it's on the same domain name, typically, subdomains are treated like separate domains in terms of backlinks. So, even if you do 301-redirect, there WILL BE at least temporary consequences. Because one - whenever you use 301 redirect, not all of link equity is being passed and two - it takes some time for google to "realize" those 301 redirects and "rethink" the indexing.
Hope this helps.

Can forwarding users from one domain to a different domain damage rank and authority of first domain?
Preliminary Explanation: We launched a new website a couple months back but haven't had much luck in Google taking notice. One of the main attractions to our site is an old flash app that was made nearly a decade ago. As the original developer has long ago moved on and we are unable to figure out how to integrate it with our new site, we've been stuck hosting the flash app on a different domain. As such, users who come to our site and want to use the app must immediately navigate away from our site to this other domain. This has caused our primary domain's bounce rate and average site time to plummet while raising it for the other domain. My question: is this damaging our search rank and page authority with Google for this primary domain/site and counter-acting any other positive SEO changes we can make? How much weight does Google give towards bounce rate/average site time spent by users in its overall calculations for search rank and page authority? Our average site time for this primary domain is resting currently at 50-60 seconds, while for the secondary domain that hosts the old flash app it is 4-5 minutes.

Moving servers which means moving ip address but using the same URL. Would it harm the website's SEO?
Hello everyone, The server (in-house) which we use to host our website is a bit old. We are using CDN77 for our static content. What if I move all our website to the CDN service? meaning I use their storage capability and just have our url point to the IP address they provide. Would that hurt our rankings?

Reasons Why Our Website Pages Randomly Loads Without Content
I know this is not a marketing question but this community is very dev savvy so I'm hoping someone can help me. At random times we're finding that our website pages load without the main body content. The header, footer and navigation loads just fine. If you refresh, it's fine but that's not a solution. Happens on Chrome, IE and Firefox, testing with multiple browser versions Happens across various page types - but seems to be only the main content section/container Happens while on the company network, as well as externally Happens after deleting cookies, temporary internet files and restarting computer We are using a CMS that is virtually unheard of - Bridgeline/Iapps Codebase is .net Our IT/Dev group keeps pushing back, blaming it on cookies or Chrome plugins because they apparently are unable to "recreate the problem". This has been going on for months and it's a terrible experience for the user to have. It's also not great when landing PPC visitors on pages that load with no content. If anyone has ideas as to why this may be happening I would really appreciate it. I'm not sure if links are allowed, by today the issue happened on this page serversdirect.com/dm/geek-biz Linking to an image example below knEUzqd

40 percent redundant content on landing pages with 60 percent unique information.
I have searched schema.org for tags to use for our redudant content on 25 unique local landing pages. The redundant content references our services and abilities on each page. Could anyone tell me how to retain this content and direct the search engines to disregard this portion of the landing page. We are a WordPress site -- if there is a plugin - I would love to know which one might work, although I have not been able to find one that will protect us from duplicate content issues. Thank you in advance.

Does doubling up on domains increase my ranking?
I own two websites. One is older and contains the bulk of my content. The other is a web-based tool that has less written content, but is equally important to my business. For the sake of examples we'll call the older website "oldsite.com" and new website "newsite.com". Would it benefit my old site to direct traffic to the web-based tool using a domain like "newsite.oldsite.com"? What's the best way to integrate the two sites so I am not splitting my traffic?

Can SEO Moz perform a full site crawl and provide a report showing all URLs within an existing domain?
We are conducting a site redesign and need to get an idea of all pages that are out there on our domain (in some report fashion). This would help for discovery and cleanup as we re-work the site and move to a new CMS. Thanks

Page Title or Search Friendly Urls?
We are currently auditing our website as part of our SEO strategy. One item which hascome up is the importance of search friendly urls against the search engine friendly page titles. Do url's or page titles carry more relevance than the other in search engines? Obviously the ideal would be to have both to maximise search impact but do either carry more importance. Thanks
