Moving from Blogspot to blog hosted on our domain
-
Hi there, I work for a furniture retailer in the UK and I have a question about moving our blog.
We have had a blog at www.ourcompany.blogspot.co.uk since 2012 and it was last updated mid 2014. There are about 100 posts and the content is actually really good, not spammy in any way and not stuffed with links to our site. The content is essentially guides to buying the right furniture.
We have now launched blog functionaility on our website at www.ourcompany.co.uk/blog as I feel this is a better long-term solution to increasing site traffic and page rank.
I want to pick your brains on the best way to handle the old content.
-
A: Copy all the Blogspot content across and back date it to the same date it was originally published and then delete the old Blogspot account? Or will Google see this as duplicate content.
-
B: Backup all the Blogspot content now, delete the Blogspot account and then repost this content at a later date? Will this still be seen as duplicate content?
-
something else.
Thanks for reading.

Can anyone else shed any light on this? Many thanks.

Thanks for your reply. however the one issue I have is with 301 redirects - I have Googled but I don't think it is possible to do this with Blogspot.
If I were to backup all the content, then delete the Blogspot account, wait a month then repost some of the content back onto ourdomain.co.uk/blog/ would Google likely penalise that content?

Hi Benjita,
The best way would be to migrate the content that you still want to keep (the one that is getting visits from your users, getting organic search visibility, rankings and traffic) from the old blog: www.ourcompany.blogspot.co.uk to the new address at: www.ourcompany.co.uk/blog/ (great choice on using a subdirectory for the blog, btw, since it's usually better than subdomains).
In order to do this, the best is to implement 301 redirects from the old blog URLs to their new addresses:
www.ourcompany.blogspot.co.uk/blog-post-here.html 301 redirect to www.ourcompany.co.uk/blog/blog-post-here.html
In order not only to take your users from the old to the new destination, but also pass the link popularity value from the old to the new, and be able to keep the rankings that the old ones were getting.
If at some point you decide that you don't want to take certain content to the new location, then it's recommended that you assess what will be the impact of it: Is content that is getting a lot of traffic and ranking well? Is it because it is duplicated or non-relevant content anymore? If at some point it is getting organic search visibility and traffic then you might want to redirect this content to pages in the new blog location that will address the same information: For example, if you had a post A and post B talking about the same topic and you want to only enable a post A in the new blog, then 301 redirect post B to the post A at the new location, the relevance will be kept and you will be able to consolidate it all in a more relevant, better organized Web architecture. So this can be seen as an opportunity for you to improve your current organization.
Besides implementing 301 redirects from each of the old URLs to their new addresses on the new blog, it's also important that you:
- Update links going to the URLs in the old blog to the new one
- Generate an XML sitemap for the new blog, create a Google Search Console profile for it and make sure you submit it.

Hellooooo! Does anyone else have any thought on this? Thank you.

Hi Ruben thanks for your reply. Could you explain why those aren't good options and when you say redirect, what you mean by that? A 301 on all Blogspot content to ourwebsite.com/blog or something else?
Thank you.
Benjita.
-
I don't think either of those good options...Why don't you just redirect the blog to your new domain?

Content Creation For Blog & Ranking Locally
Hey Everyone, I'm trying to rank for specific long tail key words such as: lower back pain treatment exercises lower back surgery options herniated disc exercises and etc. My question is: If I create a blog or article on these key words and integrate content and video within it and on youtube, will these blog posts come up locally when someone searches it within my area?

Updating a Business Blog Article - Old or New Published Date
There are a few business blogs that I'm currently updating - include more details, information, case studies, statistics etc. The blog was originally published in September of 2016. Once I make the changes, do I keep the same original date or do I change the date to the day that i've uploaded the new information? Example:

Original Published date: September 2016
Updated Blog: June 2017. What date should the blog display? Thank you.0 -
Blog migration
Hi We have 4 websites - 1 for company and 3 for each products. Currently all our blog posts are located on the company website company.com/blog. We will be separating out the blog so that product blogs will be in each product website. i.e. from company.com/blog to: company.com/blog product1.com/blog product2.com/blog product3.com/blog This is with the aim of helping SEO for each of the product websites; and improving user experience so users can easily navigate around the product pages if they are reading a blog post on the product. So now we have to consider migration. We will migrate/copy over all blog posts to each of the relevant product websites, but should we: A. keep the old blog posts on company.com/blog and do a rel=canonical B. only show blog preview on company.com/blog which will link to the new product.com/blog (and using 301 redirect) C. 301 redirect all blog posts from company.com/blog altogether Any suggestions on which of the above options to take would be greatly appreciated in terms of SEO and other considerations

My keywords have low search volume - is it still worth starting a blog?
I'm thinking of starting a new blog, but when I did my keyword research I found that my keywords all have low search volume (under 100 searches per month, with the occasional keyword having 480 searches a month). Is this a deal breaker? Any recommendations would be great - thanks everyone!

Could posting on YouMoz get you penalized for "Guest Blogging?"
From my understanding, Matt Cutts hates guest blogging, so I told all of the attorneys here not to write anywhere but on our blog. However, I realized people are constantly "guest blogging' on Moz, and considering how smart these people are, it must not be hurting them or they wouldn't do it. However, what I don't understand is why? Yes, I do get that the quality of what's on YouMoz is high and not spammy, but I got the impression that didn't really matter. Guest blogging would get you into trouble no matter what. Can someone clarify for me? Thanks, Ruben

What is your take on using Google images for blogs
In your opinion, do you think it is okay to use Google images for your blog posts as long as it credits or includes a link to the site in which you located it? We tried looking at stock art for some license-free photos and had no luck in coming up with good pictures. What rules or guidelines do you follow when looking for pictures for your customers blog (or your own)? A lot of our posts have to do with "what to do in this city" or "Where to go in this city". Do you think it's okay to use Google images for these types of posts?

Harder and harder to get articles approved on My Blog Guest
Hi People, So I got a My Blog Guest account (paid) and have now for a while, I do back the service as its a great system and works well BUT mods are making it very hard work. I put up around 20 articles a month on this site which costs me £300+ to have produced by a professional copywriter and the standard is very high, I get feedback from bloggers commenting on how good the articles are because of the quality of the content (articles are 500 - 550 words). So all I ask in return is 1 link in the body and 1 link in the byline. I ask the copy writer to put a particular keyword somewhere in the content where it best fits, if its a top 5/top 10 article the keyword sometimes fits best in the first few paragraphs before it flows into the list. This is where the problem is: Now these articles are good, they have to be as there for a company with products in major high street retail stores so quality is not an issue. If I put the link in the first paragraph I get these kind of responses: "Linking from opening paragraph is rude to say at least" If I put the link in the second paragraph I get these kind of responses: "Please move your body link to the bottom of the article or better the byline" "The normal procedure is to Hide articles with links in the first few paragraphs like this one...Please edit to put the link in the second half of the article" "Links should be in the second half of the post" Then the articles are taken down until I do what they say! It's my article I can put the link where I want its up to the blog owner whether they want it or not, its not the content you want to administrate its the quality of the blogs, I got users private emailing me asking me to buy links, I've got users applying for articles where there using blogspot and wordpress free sites with content scrapped from the web. I think they got bigger problems then a link in the second paragraph and not the third.
