How to handle knock-off product leveraging your brand keywords?
-
Hello all,
I fear this may be a bit of newcomer question but maybe you can help me out.
My business is in a highly competitive market, and when you search for our branded name many of our competitors show up in search results well before us (who don't contain, or even reference, our brand name on their site). We're trying to take a proactive approach to content development and site enhancement, but I am wondering if there's anything on the defense-front that we can do to better own our brand ranking in SERPs.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Should I be reading SEO 101?
Thanks

Google should be able to understand that all these are variations on your brand name, so you shouldn't need to worry much about that from a link building/organic search perspective. On the paid search side, you'll want to bid on as many variations of your brand as you currently see driving traffic or mentions to your site.
-
No, AdWords spend has no impact on your organic rankings. Running AdWords can give you other good insights, though, such as how well different keywords convert when they drive traffic.

Another great reply, thank you! We actually just met with our PR firm and discussed drumming up some positive coverage in part for link building. We'll definitely be trying to tackle more of this in 2016+.
One of our challenges is the broad range of things people refer to us as in the market. Some call us "Happy Joe cars", others call us "Happy-Joe cars", "Happy Joe autos", etc. We are officially "Happy-Joe Cars" but most don't know to search for that, either omitting the "-" or creating some variation of that.
Would you happen to have any advice on how to capture variations, or should that not matter?
Thank you again.

Apologies for the slow response, but thank you for the great answer. We had thought about trying this out, but I'm curious... in the long run would running adwords actually help our organic ranking?

Hi Jamie,
Yes I have a suggestion for you. You can start Google Ad words search campaign for branded keywords only. You will be at number 1 in no time and I hope CPC would be very low because you are using your brand name as keywords.
You can also try this for Bing if your sites getting significant number of searches from Bing.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

Hi Jamie,
Don't stress about asking newbie questions, that's what we're here for!
Most of the time when we see this happen it's because the overall site strength is quite weak and the brand name is very close to a major term. e.g. if the industry is car hire, the brand name is something like Joe's Car Hire.
This being the case, there are a few basic things you can do that should at least see you rank up for your own brand:
Use your brand name in a consistent way across the site. This can be in your page titles, headings, body content etc. It doesn't really matter where, as long as it makes sense to use it there; don't force it! Using the above example, don't mix it up and use a combination of Joe's Car Hire, Joe's Professional Car Hire, Car Hire from Joes, try to keep it consistent so it's clear that the exact phrase "Joe's Car Hire" is your brand name.
Actively work on improving your sitewide strength. Start with all the usual culprits. Make sure your page titles, headings, content, navigation, sitemap etc etc are all on point and sufficient, as well as your backlink profile. I know this is very broad advice but if you're not ranking for your own brand, there must be a few things currently lacking.
As for being defensive, there really isn't anything you can do about this one, particularly given the fact that they're not using your brand name anywhere on their site so they're making no active attempt to do this.
I hope this helps!

Help! Odd SERP results on two branded terms.
We have had the ODDEST thing happen to our Branded search. Last week we started seeing our Women’s subdomain (women.duluthtrading.com) outranking our main Duluth Trading domain (duluthtrading.com) on searches for “duluth trading co” and “duluth trading company”. Sample of odd results page: http://screencast.com/t/cKgkaYc1 As you can see- our Women's sub domain is ranking #1 then our main domain, THEN what used to be our organic site links are now listing 3-6. If you search for "duluth trading" though, you will get the typically results page: http://screencast.com/t/qGLDWiM0f We have been trying to figure out how or why this has happened. Our website went out for 30 minutes on January 4th. We thought maybe that is what happened but it has now been 7 days. Any help or suggestions would be great!

New domain for new branding
We are considering taking a redirect off and have our 20 yr old website go to our new name/brand 1yr old website. (junonia.com to junoactive.com) is there a checklist or template to follow when doing this? I need to get this completed with as little ramifications as possible. Help!? I did see the whiteboard friday concerning this and was hoping there was some more info or advice I could get to prepare everyone for what would happen and make sure I am getting it done right.

Legacy Locations and Google Local - How to Handle
Hello - I'm working with a client who has some transitioning brands - and they're hesitant to change the legacy branding in Google Local and on their website because they're afraid of losing traffic from the old brand. Is there a standard practice for keeping traffic on the old brand terms, while still adjusting to the new branding on Google/Yahoo/Bing? Thanks,

Whar are the Keyword and Link Implications of renaming a Website
I'm about to change the name of a popular site classyauto.com to nationalvehicle.com. The reason for the name change is mainly because of the negative report on classyauto from years past. We've decided to rename the company to National Vehicle for that reason and other reasons. With that, the current site does not currently rank high for many of the natural organic niche keywords we want to target. But, it does have a good amount of links and traffic. I would like recommendations on the best method to rename the site including any ideas on what to do with existing directories, links, etc. efficiently and effectively. I would also like input on what NOT TO DO. Thanks in advance and any tools, tricks, or additional resources you can point me to would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Brand anchor text distribution. Does the HP url classify as brand anchor?
Hi guys, I just wanted to know what your take is on this and whether anyone knows if google has published any info on this. I am wanting to analyse a fairly large backlink profile. The idea is to discover how far it correlates alongside recent SERPS ranking data (based on anchor text distribution) information that has been published across the web. There is so much data to categorise and segment. This is due to overlaps in categorisation, (which is possibly a good thing as it appears more natural) though I often it difficult to decide which goes where. My question today relates to brand anchor text - in determining the % of overall brand distribution for a backlink profile - Which out of the below do you think rings true? 1.) Should I be considering the homepage url anchor text as a branded link anchor? 2.) Should the brand % just be 'pure brand' anchor text? 3.) Should it contain partial brand + KWD data? 4.) Should it comprise of all of the above elements? 5.) Should I divvy up / segment partial brand, pure brand, brand + kwd, citations etc into new sub categories and see how this individual data correlates to current ranking factors in the SERPS? (Not sure if there is any recent published data in this amount of detail) Anyway, I just wondered what you guys thought about this in the eyes of Google., and also to find out how you go about classifying and segmenting backlink profile data. Thanks for now

Need a quick simple report comparing popularity of two brand names...
CURT Manufacturing compared to Reese Products. curtmfg.com and reeseprod.com Both sell towing and trailer hitch products. What is the best approach you can recommend using the Pro tools? I perform lightweight analytics using Google Analytics, and some keyword tools here, and also Majestic SEO and Compete - but not a pro and would LOVE it if someone can give me best course direction. Thank you, M Adelman

Should I redirect a direct keyword url?
We are a manufacture of a product and we own the url of our business/product name (samples) "www.thewafflemaker.com" and our company name is "The Waffle Maker". We do all of our business on "www.thewafflemaker.com" and rank #1 for about 16 of the top 20 keywords related to "Waffle Makers". However, we also own "www.wafflemaker.com" without "The" in the URL. Right now we have it set up as a single page that contains information about the product and a link to our sales site. Should we build this site up or have it just redirect to "www.thewafflemaker.com"? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
