Hi Mozers, is the AMP project is supposed to be an SEO factor on mobile platforms? Also, can it be used on ecommerce sites such as Magento or Shopify as well? Thanks!

It stands to reason that Google will favor early adopters of Accelerated Mobile Pages, but it seems heavily geared toward news publishers so far. What about regular Wordpress sites, or ecommerce sites like Shopify, should AMP be pursued on that type of CMS?

Nice update Kevin! And a good use-case of sites that could really benefit from AMP: heavy mobile traffic / users, content heavy pages, ability to mitigate technical constraints.
Call-in based service businesses in competitive markets would also be prime candidates for AMP as well.

We are moving to a custom AMP HTML site now and I'm doing most of the work. The whole site doesn't have to be valid AMP HTML, just offer an AMP version of your pages with a rel attribute. For content heavy pages, we think his is a good thing. Over 90% of our traffic is viewed on a mobile device, so we agree it won't hurt to go this way. Benefits include near instant page rendering on mobile devices, top spot on mobile SERP carousel, and free caching on Google CDN. Nothing wrong with all that.
AMP HTML currently doesn't suppoort input fields of any kind. No search, no forms, no nothing. No external CSS or JS, and fonts are very limited, especially for Asian fonts due to the JS restrictions. So you can't create an e-commerce site with valid AMP HTML. But your e-coomerce pages don't have to be, but you'll need to get creative. There is iframe support, so carts like Ecwid might work. Will update as we get closer to that part.
We've started with Skeleton framework and cleaned it up a bit, but we're finding the CSS rules a bit restrictive, like !impotant is not allowed. So even just the Bootstrap grid will need a lot of scubbing to validate. And you must validate or there's no point.
So far, we're ok. Love to hear what others have learned working with AMP.

I consider about WordPress. However, with the developing rapidly of other open source e-commerce platforms such as Magento, Prestashop, OpenCart, Shopify, e-merchants need to analyze more and more to choose something for online business. http://blog.litextension.com/the-best-ecommerce-platform-of-2016/

very interesting, thank you, things are changing fast!

You are absolutely correct about AMP being geared towards news publishers (as of now). There are enormous benefits and opportunities for players within this space.
I have a feeling that AMP version 2 will include a lot of updates for other sites (such as ecommerce, etc.)
Also, I've heard that WordPress developers are building AMP plugins that will automatically convert pages to AMP if you want. Also, I saw someone mentioning that WordPress was actually going to build this into their CMS eventually.
Essentially, there are a lot of things up in there for sites that aren't news publishers. It will be interesting where AMP goes in the near future!

Thanks so much, your expertise is truly appreciated.

I'm likewise not concerned with AMP.
If your site is already responsive, speedy, and showing up as "mobile-friendly" in search you have an advantage over many sites out there. You'll get much more value by making sure your site is as fast as possible for your users (especially in ecommerce).

Thanks to you as well, it's great to get clarity on this issue, much obliged!

Very much appreciate your insights. Google is chasing down so many hoodoos it's really difficult to discern which ones are worth pursuing. Thanks very much!

James,
We produce quite a bit and we do not believe now is the time to be concerned about AMP. I echo EGOL on this, especially it seems to be truly around very heavy content sites. If someone like EGOL is not worrying over it given he knows quite a bit about deep and heavy content, I would hold off for now. If you are in the news publishing world it is a bit more of an issue.

You are right. AMP is currently geared for news sites.
I don't think that it has any current benefit for ecommerce sites or publishers outside of the news industry.
I am not putting any current effort into AMP. Google announces and abandons so many things that I would wait to see how it works, identify best practice and then implement after I see Google make an apparent commitment to it. I've jumped through too many worthless hoops to take fast action on new announcements. Others have different beliefs. Explorers and pioneers get slaughtered. Settlers usually fare better.

Sitemap use for very large forum-based community site
I work on a very large site with two main types of content, static landing pages for products, and a forum & blogs (user created) under each product. Site has maybe 500k - 1 million pages. We do not have a sitemap at this time.
Technical SEO | | CommManager
Currently our SEO discoverability in general is good, Google is indexing new forum threads within 1-5 days roughly. Some of the "static" landing pages for our smaller, less visited products however do not have great SEO.
Question is, could our SEO be improved by creating a sitemap, and if so, how could it be implemented? I see a few ways to go about it: Sitemap includes "static" product category landing pages only - i.e., the product home pages, the forum landing pages, and blog list pages. This would probably end up being 100-200 URLs. Sitemap contains the above but is also dynamically updated with new threads & blog posts. Option 2 seems like it would mean the sitemap is unmanageably long (hundreds of thousands of forum URLs). Would a crawler even parse something that size? Or with Option 1, could it cause our organically ranked pages to change ranking due to Google re-prioritizing the pages within the sitemap?
Not a lot of information out there on this topic, appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.0 -
Google Indexing Desktop & Mobile Versions
We have a relatively new site and I have noticed recently that Google seems to be indexing both the mobile and the desktop version of our site. There are some queries where the mobile version will show up and sometimes both mobile and desktop show up. This can't be good. I would imagine that what is supposed to happen is that the desktop version is the one that should be indexed (always) and browser detection will load the mobile version where appropriate once the user is on the site. Do you have any advice on what we should do to solve this problem as we are a bit stuck?

Is using part of a meta description already on your site for another product considered duplicate?
I'm writing meta descriptions for this site, trying to keep them different, however, for two product types, I want to add the same info I added in the other likeminded product's meta descriptions. Is this ok as long as it's not the whole sentence or am I really to rewrite the same info another way, which is hard for " quick shipping available for x amount of colors ". Any Advice?

Mobile site domain authority
Hello, I think this may be a coding issue, but hoping someone can help me. I am still having issues with our mobile site ranking, even though we created redirects/canonical to identify similar content between desktop version and mobile. I did notice through MOZ analysis of backlinks that we have no domain authority. If the mobile site is automatically detected dependent on the user, shouldn't we also have the same domain authority? How does that work exactly? How can we build up the domain authority for our mobile site? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Should I Use Two Domains for Multi Language Sites?
I have an immigration attorney that wants a website in English and another in Spanish. We're going to have some of the website content from the English site translated via a translator to make it true, conversation spanish (automatic translators are good, but not perfect, and we want perfect). So my question is do you think we should use two different domains (englishsite.com, spanishsite.com), a subdomain (spanishsite.englishsite.com) or maybe just a separate section of the regular site (englishsite.com/spanishcontent)? My thought would be either a subdomain or a separate section so that we're not splitting PR.

Cloudflare Email Address Protecting & SEO
I have a client who uses Cloudflare to protect their email address on their website from spam and when I crawl their site looking for errors it causes it to report multiple broken links on each page. Does anyone know how this impacts SEO? Should I recommend removing Cloudflare?

My client has lost his URL - is there anything he can do to salvage SEO?
My new client has had his URL for 8 years and built up good SEO, visitors and links. He has now lost it and the cost of getting it back is prohibitive. Apart from contacting all the places he is currently getting links from, is there anything he can do to salvage SEO and site visitors? Is there anyway he can get 301s done if he no longer owns the URL? If he starts again with a new URL, and loads all the new content on it, will submitting a site map help Google understand its not duplicate and all the content is just at a new URL? He is hoping that contacting Google and explaining will help them "look kindly", but I have never heard anything like this happening! Any ideas? Many thanks
