Hint from Google To Hospitality Industry Regarding Images + Bookings?
-
Hey To All My Favorite Local Folks Here!
Have clients in the hospitality industry? You might be interested in this Mike Blumenthal post in which he does a good job of voicing the frustration business owners may feel when their preferred Google profile photo is overridden with Google's preferred pic. The post does more than just vent, though ... it actually hints at something quite fascinating that Google may have just offered up to the hospitality industry by switching from hotel-preferred exterior shots to Google-preferred interior shots of rooms.
Mike's contention (and it's one shared by many in the industry) is that Google makes moves like this because they are maximizing profit. From the image switching that just happened, I think it makes sense to theorize that Google has gathered enough internal data to convince them that room shots lead to more bookings than do exterior views of lodgings. This wouldn't surprise me at all. When you're looking for a place to stay, it's the room you're going to stay in that matters most ... not really whether the exterior building is made of brick, wood or stucco, right? Certainly, a beautiful, fancy building could sway you, but if the rooms look awful inside, that's probably a deal breaker.
If Mike is right, then I think Google's image switcharoo offers an extremely compelling reason to follow Google's lead and shine a major spotlight - on your website which you CAN control - on your interior photography. This suggestion could apply at all levels of the industry, from major hotel corporations that might want to rethink homepage contents and interior page layouts, to country B&Bs that have never made the investment in getting a pro photo shoot done that will truly showcase their rooms. I know, as a traveler, I've seen everything from stunning to downright dark, distorted and scary when it comes to hotel room photography.
If Google knows it gets more bookings when good clear room shots are given pride of place, your hotel clients might want to be taking notes on that.
Do you agree? As a hospitality industry Local SEO (or even as a traveler) what do you think is the most influential booking factor? Do you have any tips to share with others in the industry or an opinion on Google's switcharoo? Please, share with our community!

Yeah, the Oatmeal comic was correct: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/working_home
Degradation of social skills. Plus no real sense of urgency to acquire new business. It's too easy to sit back and play in graphs and sheets all day. Then with the increased interest for the development side, I could feel productive chasing shiny objects all day. After all, I was 'working' wasn't I?
I could work for one of the agencies in the area, but I don't want to sign non-competes/covenants or a NDA. Unless it's mine, never another agency.
But yeah, one does meet a lot of business people at a hotel, made for business persons. I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool sales person. It keeps conversations natural, as well as likely.
Plus, I get pretty decent discounts on hotels everywhere. Should a convention or client require travel, that's nice.
Just have to Guerilla/Science things while the momentum builds. In fact, I received a prospective client recently - due to my previous answers in Moz Q&A. That was nice.
But yeah, rambling. Lots of new photos should be coming from Wyndham family hotels, at least for the next year. It's mandated by corporate. Perhaps it would be interesting to note if a set of fresh photos does much for them organically - as a hotel family (in aggregate).

Hey Travis!
Thanks for mentioning Wyndham's photo push - sounds like they are going with the tide on this. Interesting! Makes good sense - I've stayed at some of their properties and they are pretty solidly nice (and have kitchens! *see my earlier comment). And good for you, Travis, for challenging yourself to be more out and about in the world at wide. Life on the computer can be a bit isolating at times ... I'd say a busy hotel would be the perfect antidote!
Appreciate you sharing some thoughts on this thread.

I actually started working nights at a business class hotel. It made sense to me. Get paid extra while working on projects in the back, and overcome my hermetic ways. (the level I like to isolate myself is totally unhealthy, for a number of reasons)
I mean, I was staying up all night and making coffee anyway. If business is slow for a month, the bills are covered. Ah yes, the rough & tumble early days. Plus I have strong incentive to do that whole 'hygiene' thing. (remain presentable in button-down shirt, tie, slacks and dress shoes - does wonders for the morale)
Most people, if they're unfamiliar with the property, are most concerned with what the rooms will look like - after price. And with the listing changes, they would see both - from the drop - before they even call. I know the Wyndham family is in the midst of a big 'photo refresh' push, across all of their franchises. (sorry, photogs... it appears they've already selected their people)
Point being, exterior shots aren't being prioritized - it would appear - though there will be some exterior shots.
It all seems entirely reasonable.

Hi Robert!
You know - that's a really smart idea! I can totally see how the Assisted Living industry would relate to this topic and that the quality of the rooms residents stay in would be a major feature. Great observation, and I hope the next monthly meeting starts a great conversation about that.
For me, when I look for lodgings, the first think I check for is kitchens! I have to be able to cook anywhere I go and even the nicest bedroom in the world won't sell me if the lodging lacks a kitchen. So, innkeepers everywhere, show me your kitchens!
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on this. I enjoyed reading your comment.

This is a great bit of insight! Thank you for bringing it to the community! I have to say that from an outside observer/regular traveler point of view... I would agree to the premise of this post. I personally check exactly what my room and other rooms look like, how nice the pool is and if there is an onsite gym before I make a purchase decision. I could care less about the face of the Hotel, or the parking situation, as long as my room has a desk, a nice bed and a spacious bathroom.
We don't currently represent any Hotels or B&B's with our SEO Services, but we do represent a number of Assisted Living businesses and I'll be bringing this up at our next monthly meeting with them. Could bolster their residency percentages.

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I wondered exactly that same thing about restaurants. I wonder if interiors or food shots are more influential. I'd love to see a study on that, if someone does one.
-
Makes sense, and we will be exploring this approach with our clients. I'm curious if they would take a similar approach to restaurants, either focus on photos of the interior or maybe even the food.

Google Local Changes Randomly & Our Site Keeps Dropping Off Search
I work for a university where we have 2 law schools. We have our one school on the other side of the state that has been around for a very long time, and then a newer school that is right on our main campus that has been around for about 5 - 10 years now. The newer of the 2 schools is having so much trouble being able to claim the name of the school in google search. If you type in the name of the school the other school (the one that has been around longer) was coming up in the google local on the right of the screen and their web URL was never showing up in search. This is a huge problem because the accreditations of the 2 schools are different, and students are showing up at the wrong school for their interviews. Search will only show a domain name that used to be owned by the older school but now gives information for both of the schools. So it'll show up in search results, but only under that other domain and not their own domain that has their name in the domain name. This school has an updated google mybusiness listing, and a google+ page with the correct listing. I've added some schema data around the business address on their site and JSON for the google+ page, and have re-indexed their sitemap a few times after some changes have been made and we are using their name more in the site. This fixed everything for a short while and we were getting the appropriate google local listing and their site was appearing in search results above the site that advertised both schools. Now, after about 3 months, it has reverted. I had the older school showing up in the google local, and the site that advertises both schools is the ONLY domain appearing. I've re-indexed the site after finding out that Drupal's timestamps that they automatically add to sitemaps aren't optimized for how google reads it. This has gotten the local listing back, but I still have the wrong domain appearing, it is the one advertises both schools instead of the domain that has this school's information. I don't mind that the one advertising both shows up, but if a user is searching for that particular school I would really like to get that domain to appear first above the one advertising both schools and the older school. Right now the new school isn't even in search results except for being under the site that advertises both. I wasn't sure if this was something that Moz Local could help me fix by adding the listing across the web, or if there is something else on the sites I can be doing to help them solidify their name in google search/local. Also - is this subdomain that is advertising both of them hurting them or help them? I was thinking about taking that domain down to one page that acts as a direction source to the 2 domains rather than having a ton of information and keywords that take over the results for their name since that domain is older (and used to be associated with the old school only before the new school was built) Thank you for any advice on this issue as I'm still pretty new to SEO and to the university. Thanks again!

Map placement on google disappear after claiming business
Hi guys 1st of all pls bear with me as i am new to this, google created a page for our business im not sure how probably its automatic and since it was created by google its unclaimed. My friend have been telling us that everytime he search for our business which is a furniture business located in the philippines he just type in our exact business name "evergreen diamond school supplies" then map or location appear on the right side of the google search engine. After finding out about google business from a friend i tried to claim our business page, we hire a web developer to build a website for us and since our business name is too long "evergreen diamond school supplies" the dev team suggested a shorter name which is "edssph.com" since "edss.com" is not available then after 2 weeks site was done and we launched it. We claimed the unclaimed business page of our business and it took us 3 weeks to receive the post card and now it was verified. We are very happy and when we type our business name "evergreen diamond school supplies" map appears and contact #'s are there and all the necessary info users need but after 2 days whenever i type "evergreen diamond school supplies" location doesnt appear anymore i have to type in "evergreen diamond school supplies taguig" where taguig is our city where our business is located, so what happened? i hope someone here can guide me. If "eevergreen diamond school supplies" doesnt work anymore i am fairly new to local SEO so i'd like to know what happened or what could i have done wrong. thanks in advance

Google Plus Business Page is not showing up
Hello, I had 2 google+ business pages. But the website under those pages were different. For example, www.abc.com on 1st one and then www.xyz.com on 2nd one. Both of them had the different business name and website but same address and phone number. Also, www.abc.com domain was set as redirecting to www.xyz.com. My 1st business page was ranking good but I wanted to use 2nd one only so I called up google and asked them to remove the 1st one and then they closed it. Now, the problem is that I lost the 1st one and 2nd one is not ranking for any of the keyword (I have checked all the pages in the SERP and it doesn't show up anywhere until last page). I have fixed all the citations everywhere recently but no luck in getting ranking. Can anyone suggest what steps can be done to rank 2nd one now? FYI, I am talking about local places ranking, the domain www.xyz.com is ranked well in organic ranking. Any help is appreciated! Brian

Image names, product names, alt tags the same. Image names with various sizes the same?
I am rebuilding my site and wish to provide the best and complete information about a product and the image, and alt tag for the user. Is it ok, good, to use the same name in a image file name, alt tag, title tag AND product name? It seems to me they should be the same. Why change the product, name , image name, alt tag, and on the product page the title tag? I am working with a product that has the same base name but with more options and duplicate image file names but with different sizes of the image. Example... SLR Camera Strap with a dependable grip pad and nylon web is the core product. Options are kevlar web, rapid releases and then rapid releases with vectran cord or kevlar web. slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-nylon-web_1500p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-kevlar-web_1500p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-large-rapid-release-kevlar-web-ends_1500p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-large-rapid-release-vectran-loop-ends_1500p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-large-web_1500p.jpg, Then... there will be the same image but with different sizes of the same images being built internally and held in the images folder for various devices such as slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-nylon-web_400p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-nylon-web_100p.jpg and on and on.... As a secondary question the file names are long but that is what it takes to describe it. If I remove the key yet repetitive base name XX camera-strap what I end up with is dependable-grip-pad-kevlar-web What to do? What to do?
